Wtf just happened to me

I really want to know if anyone has ever experienced anything like this. I’m currently waiting for a call back after contacting 111 for advice

Not sure if this is relevant, but I had a large tattoo done on my shin yesterday. Very reputable award winning place so no issues with hygiene or anything. I’ve been resting my leg and keeping it uncovered and clean. I also have anemia but this is managed with medication

I got up from the sofa and went into the kitchen. After about 5 minutes, DP commented on the colour of my shin, and it was a really deep purpley red all over. I started to feel really weird and like I was going to pass out. I sat down and I couldn’t see anything, really dizzy, my head was pounding and I started dripping with sweat. My face had apparently gone really pale and my lips and gums had gone completely white. DP was considering taking me to A&E as I looked so bad. After about 10 minutes I started to feel better. I feel a bit cold and shaky and I’m drenched in sweat, but I feel 90% better than I did

Can anyone shed any light on what this might be!? I’ve never felt anything remotely like it before

The fact that your shin was purple, and.your face, gums and lips were white, tells me that all the blood rushed to the 'wound' (the tattoo site), this is a standard medical shock response, blood rushes to where it thinks it's needed, leaving you dizzy and faint.

The question is, why your body showed a shock response... Is it a particularly large tattoo?

ChristmasWithBellsOn · 30/12/2021 16:09

PS I am not a doctor, but have had shock responses in response to injury.

WhispersOfWickedness · 30/12/2021 16:11

Is it still purply red? The same size or getting bigger?

Mylee · 30/12/2021 16:11

@christmaswithbellson That’s what I was thinking it might be, the rest of my leg was fine. It is quite big, from ankle to knee and full colour. It took around 6 hours to do. It’s been fine yesterday and most of today, just that one episode just now

I'm not one to panic, but I think you need to go to A&E.

Mylee · 30/12/2021 16:13

@WhispersOfWickedness it’s gone back to normal colour now. It’s a little red around the tattoo, but where the skin is broken, not like the colour of my leg if that makes sense

It does sound like possibly a shock response or a potential infection reaction.
Do you have a temperature?? Keep an eye out for any signs of infection & seek help if you have any suspicions xox

DaisyNGO · 30/12/2021 16:19

@eagerlywaitingfor

I'm not one to panic, but I think you need to go to A&E.
Agree.
Mylee · 30/12/2021 16:22

@eagerlywaitingfor I did think that at the time and I know DP definitely did. I’ll see what 111 say, and if they say to still go I’ll head over straight away. They said someone should call back by 5pm

@sjxoxo temperature is fine and no other signs of infection at the moment, but I’ll be keeping a very close eye on it

A&E for sure. Could be DVT.

Dixiechickonhols · 30/12/2021 16:24

I’d go to a minor injuries if you can and get checked out. It sounds like a shock reaction. You body has a large injury and is reacting (it doesn’t care it was deliberately done tattoo it just knows you’ve injured your shin)

custardbear · 30/12/2021 16:25

I'd phone emergency NHS for support or go to A&E personally as something may have caused it and may still be there - don't take risks

AuntieDolly · 30/12/2021 16:32

Tattoo flu? Does sound a bit severe though.

Arabelladrinkstea · 30/12/2021 16:35

Did you use numbing creams for the tattoo?
If so, it can make the healing afterwards x5 as severe.

Chilver · 30/12/2021 16:39

If you had just stood up, perhaps it was vasovagal syncope causing your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly?

rifling · 30/12/2021 16:43

Could it be an allergic reaction? In any case, I'd get it checked out.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 30/12/2021 16:54

My legs go purple if I stand at the sink to do dishes. I think you’re ok. See what 111 say. Ditto the blood rushing to point of injury. Also if sitting with leg up and rose immediately to standing it will cause purple leg. Sure you’re fine but best that you’ve sought medical help. Flowers

BorderlineHappy · 30/12/2021 16:58

Did you eat today.@Mylee
Did you stop for breaks yesterday whilst getting tattooed.
Did you let them know about your anemia
Did you eat yesterday.
Is your tattoo still covered or is it open.
Is there any swelling or leaking pus from the tattoo.

I'd get it checked out to be on the safe side.

Mylee · 30/12/2021 17:12

Still waiting for a call back, hopefully won’t be too much longer but I am feeling completely normal again nowConfused

@Arabelladrinkstea I didn’t no, I’ve never used them as always been advised not to

@Chilver I’ve never heard of that, but it’s very interesting. I am very squeamish around blood/any sign of injury etc but I didn’t actually faint so not sure if it could still be that?

@ThanksIGotItInMorrisons I have had my leg up most of the time I’ve been sat down as I just find it more comfortable, but I think that was probably a really bad idea. I thought I got up slowly enough but maybe I didn’t

@BorderlineHappy I did yes, ate lots yesterday and today and made sure I had quite sugary stuff and a lot of water. I had a break to stretch my legs every hour or so. Yes he is aware of the anemia. It’s uncovered, I’ve been keeping it open with nothing on it

CJat10 · 30/12/2021 17:15

Did you feel unwell before or after your partner noted the colour of your leg?

Mylee · 30/12/2021 17:16

@CJat10 a few minutes after. He pointed it out and I looked and was talking to him about it, then carried on doing something else

OP posts:
ScabbyHorse · 30/12/2021 17:17

Call 111

LynnInAVan · 30/12/2021 17:18

Could be a reaction to the ink, possibly shock, is it quite weepy today? I keep mine covered for the first week as I tend to weep a bit of gunk as the skin heals. Remember your skin thinks this is a burn

ScabbyHorse · 30/12/2021 17:18

Sorry, just realised you called them already. If anything else happens, go to A&E

CJat10 · 30/12/2021 17:19

Vasovagal syncope was my first thought. You're nursing a new tattoo and obviously conscious of after care/possible complication...he makes a suggestion that is worrying and you've had a vasovagal reaction to the conversation

Are you an anxious person normally?
