Please recommend me a light, cordless vacuum!

We live in a small cottage and our Henry hoover is just way too heavy to cart up and down the stairs. I want to get a cordless handheld dyson for whipping out to do the stairs as and when, but also will need a proper vacuum cleaner for larger areas (not that they are very large though)!

Ideally it would also be cordless but longer for reaching up high for cobwebs, and vacuuming bedroom floors etc. We do have a dog and a cat! Somehow the pet attachments to the Henry never seemed to be any different to the normal attachments though, so I'm not sure what difference that makes.

Upstairs is carpet and downstairs is wood floor.

Is the Shark one any good?
All recommendations very welcome Thanks

I have the Dyson Cylclone V10 Absolute and really glad I chose it. Copes really well with our fluffy cats' hairs, is cordless and lightweight. Different head attachments to use on our hard floor downstairs and the carpets on the stairs and upstairs.

Thank you I will google it

I have the shark and I love it. Wouldn't go back to corded now. I have the True Pet Flexology with 3 batteries version.

Shark is quite a bit cheaper - is Dyson worth the extra?

I tried all brands imaginable to replace my old Dyson. The old one is 10 years and still going strong, I just couldn't open the bin with it hurting myself. So tried various others and ended up back with Dyson, think it's animal v15, for me well worth the extra money. I can spread the cost though otherwise couldn't have got one. Emptying it is so much easier than my old style Dyson, it does a deep clean on carpets and is fantastic on my hard floor areas. Lighter and quicker to whizz round compared to the Vax and Sharks I tried. Only annoyance is you have to keep the on button pressed down with Dyson as you use, so not good if you struggle with your hands. Though I did Google and people can apparently sort that with some kind of elastic band arrangement though I've not bothered as yet!

Trinacham · 30/12/2021 09:04

@NewlyJingle2021 I thought having to hold the trigger button would get on my nerves as I wasn't used to it, but I actually like that it has that now rather than on/off! Have also heard about the attachments/band you can get to hold it down, but I definitely prefer pressing down and releasing now. You get used to it quickly!

I have a shark wandvac which I love and use every day, sometimes two or three times a day as it is so convenient and light (we have 2 DC and 2 Ddogs so it gets messy).

I do still keep my Hetty in the cupboard for a weekly 'big hoover' though.

Mol1628 · 30/12/2021 09:16

Dyson v10 or v11. Sharks are crap in my opinion.

Devonchills · 30/12/2021 09:36

I went from a Dyson to a Shark cordless and absolutely love it, far better in my opinion.

I've just got the basic model and it's amazing, lightweight and picks everything up, I would never go back to a Dyson now .

squirrelnutkins1 · 30/12/2021 09:37

I sent my cordless shark back as it was rubbish. My cordless dyson is still going strong after a good few years.
I do have a corded one for weekly cleans and then use the cordless dyson the rest of the time (can't believe I'm a two hover person 😂)

Don't get Samsung upright.

RainCloude · 30/12/2021 18:06

Thanks all, lots to think about!

I bought a Shark and it was dead on arrival. The CS was useless- luckily JL were happy to deal with the return.
Haven’t yet bought a replacement, but will research via Which? next time .

sunshinesupermum · 30/12/2021 18:18

I have an AEG. It's great.

whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy · 30/12/2021 18:20

We bought a lovely beko one last week or so. Much cheaper than the other big names and much better than our old hoover one. About £100 I think. Ill try to find it if you want?

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 30/12/2021 18:21

I have a Beldray cordless. It's lovely and light, doesn't require having to hold the button in all the time whilst hoovering and it cost me £65 oh and works fine on both my laminate and carpeted floors

willthatbeall · 30/12/2021 18:24

I've just bought a shark to replace our old dyson v5. It was a lot cheaper BUT
Massive regret. It's horrible; noisy and heavy. The dyson was fab and just lived discretely on the wall of out utility room.

Wish I'd stuck with Dyson.

WhoaBettyWhite · 30/12/2021 18:25

I converted from Dyson to Shark a few years ago.. loved my Shark, Then they brought in the anti-hair wrap versions so I decided to purchase one of those to replace my existing shark. Worst thing I ever did! I just couldn't get on with the anti-hair wrap brush roller. It didn't glide the same way, unfortunately though my existing older shark blew up three days ago so I'm back on the Dyson V10 animal now and I've had no problems with it.

RainCloude · 31/12/2021 09:03

@whyohwhyohwhyohwhywhy yes please if you have the time to find a link for me!

I hate my Shark. Such a diva. Constantly getting blocked or just being an irritating shit.

Same360 · 31/12/2021 09:11

We’ve just got a Dyson V10 animal and overall I’d say it’s good, light, easy to use, decent suction. Didn’t absolutely blow me away for the price, but I’d give it a 7/10 overall

TerribleCustomerCervix · 31/12/2021 09:15

Just don’t get tempted by the lower price price points of the Vax models- I’ve had two, the second being a replacement sent by Vax when they couldn’t fix the first one after only a few months of use.

It’s now given up the ghost as well.

Utter utter shite.

BornOnTwelfthNight · 31/12/2021 10:23

I replaced my Dyson for a shark, dyson was a heap of shit. Absolutely love the shark. Far better in the performance stakes than my dyson.

But it is heavier, ok if you are keeping in flat on the floor but takes a bit of extra effort if you want to do cobwebs or dusty corners.

JeremiahObadiahJackanoryJonez · 31/12/2021 10:30

Which Shark please @BornOnTwelfthNight? I’m flipping back and forth between Shark & Dyson.

Was always a huge Dyson fan then 2 broke in quick succession and customer services were really unhelpful for getting spares - battery for handheld was obsolete type stuff. Got a Shark corded and been really pleased with it but Which seem to suggest their cordless aren’t as good as Dyson…

Omicrone · 31/12/2021 10:34

I love my Shark cordless!

These threads always make me laugh with how polarising they are Grin
