Stuck in a rut and want to explore greek family food that isn't too difficult to make. What Greek foods do your dc like?

Mine aren't very adventurous and it's probably not strictly authentic, but they love a meal of Greek salad, pitta, hummus, halloumi and tzatziki.
I love moussaka, and lamb kleftiko, grilled/BBQ lamb cutlets (or chicken) marinated in oregano, lemon, garlic, olive oil.
We've just booked a holiday to Greece and now I'm hankering!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2021 17:22

Stuffed peppers?
Baked feta with pitta, tzatziki etc?
Greek style pizzas, with feta and olives?

Boofay · 29/12/2021 17:24

My family are Greek Cypriot. Kids love olives. The boys love some grilled Halloumi. My DH and eldest love a gyros. I'm a vegetarian so I love a Greek salad and grilled Halloumi in a pita. A veggie moussaka too. My youngest used to inhale a whole bowl of tzatziki if she had the chance!
I make a lovely feta, Halloumi and spinach pie. I have the recipe somewhere if you want it!

Gyros, Spanakopita, Sagnaki, moussaka and Kleftiko are all regular meals here thT my nine year old enjoys.

Postdatedpandemic · 29/12/2021 17:33

Mine love a Pastitsio , especially if I stand the pasta tubes on end.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 29/12/2021 17:39

Mine love gyros. Admittedly they would prefer it in holiday in Greece somewhere. You can get good Greek style flatbreads now and I marinate the chicken in a spice and herb mix. I just googled and experimented with a few until we found one we all like. Then serve with salad and tsitzki. Sometime we put chips in as we’ve had a few in Greece with chips inside. Blush

Mousakka always goes down well. I find it a bit time consuming to make and so also like the Charlie Bingham one or Waitrose one.

Otherwise we found Greek food to be simple things like pork or lamb chops marinated with lemon juice and fresh oregano. Served with new potatoes roasted with garlic and oregano. Finished with lemon juice.

DD (veggie) likes Feta baked in filo pastry with a sauce made of red wine vinegar, honey and sesame seeds Poured over it.
Not sure how authentic it is, although we did discover it in Greece.
DS loves Prawn saganaki

Littlewhiteballs · 29/12/2021 17:46

Check out Akis Petretzikis! I absolutely love his recipes and he makes most things from scratch. I hate opening a Jamie Oliver recipe and it's tinned tomatoes, tinned lentils, packet sauce, etc.

For his homemade chicken gyros he has a recipe for Greek flatbread that you dry fry in a frying pan. It's absolutely delicious 😋

My kids love lentil soup (fakes) , homemade baked beans (fasolatha), potatoes in the oven with orange juice, and feta pies with kourou dough.

IggyAce · 29/12/2021 17:48

Pastitsio and gyros and favourites in our house.

This is the Greek pie with feta and Halloumi:

I make a veggie moussaka with aubergine and red lentils. I don't have a recipe I use, but I'm sure there's one online somewhere. I'll do a quick Google!

Boofay · 29/12/2021 17:57

This one is pretty much the ingredients I use. I've not looked at the method though. I do use a regular cheese sauce though! 😬😂

Also, not exclusively Greek, but my kids love a macaroni cheese pie. Very popular within my Cypriot family! Some of the meat eating aunts put mince at the bottom of it.

The pasta tube thing I can't remember the name of
Mousakka
Spanakopita

What bread do people use for gyros, and do you fry it?

Gigantes beans are lovely, although my dc were never really convinced by them.

I use Greek pitta from the local Greek shop. It's not the usual oval pitta but round in shape and doesn't have a pocket. I fry it in a pan with some olive oil spray.
Mamaolive · 29/12/2021 18:51

I'm loving all these suggestions, thank you.

Now I'd love to be in Greece and eat in a lovely taverna by the sea. I used to go almost every year in my 20s but haven't been back in 9 years. Reading about the food makes me nostalgic. The Greek pie with feta and Halloumi looks gorgeous.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2021 19:25

Thanks @sleepykits Will definitely nicely try these. Do you fry them?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2021 19:25

God knows where that 'nicely' came from - I didn't type it! Grin
