Do you say 'Mum', or 'my mum', when speaking to a non-family member?

Inspired by a recent thread where the poster typed 'mum said XXX, dad said YYY', mum did XXZ, dad did YYY, all the way through a really, really long thread.

I've always said 'my mum, my dad' unless speaking to my brother or sister, because of course - my mum isn't your mum and I want to differentiate!

Sweeping generalisation but I have found that people who don't do this tend to be very insular / self focused. Stop saying 'mum' to me - it's not my mum!

How do you refer to your parent outside of family?

Knocked on - interesting. Are you in Ireland ? I’m London ‘my’ used to everyone except family members where it was just mum or Ma.
To friends or neighbours of my mum I would always use her first name when referring.

Always say "my mum". Occasionally my brother and I say it to each other by mistake and then have a giggle because it sounds so weird when we share a mum.

Pinetreecone · 29/12/2021 16:06

If it’s someone who knows her I say ‘Mum’ as it’s replacing her name. It seems long winded to say ‘my’ throughout the conversation.

@Knockoneofftheshelftowin

I do say 'my mam' to siblings as well as others. My siblings say 'my mam' to me.

For some reason it makes me cringe when people say 'mam/mum' without the 'my'.

I’m in Yorkshire. If I referred to either of my parents without the “my” , my brother would be a bit Confused and I might get an “ooohhh la di da, mama and papa”
Lamerexo · 02/03/2022 21:02

'Mother darling' only. I would never use 'mum'.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/03/2022 21:05

My Mam and also, fwiw, I would use my baby. It sounds affected otherwise.

golddustwomen · 02/03/2022 21:05

My mom. Except when talking to my brother it's mom.

StillWeRise · 02/03/2022 21:06

Ok a related but really enraging thing-
my SIL refers to MY mum as 'mum'- both in speaking to her and about her!
NO! she's not your mum she's mine (and my brother's obvs)
just wierd

londonmummy1966 · 02/03/2022 21:08

"My mother" in most situations - occasionally "Dear Mama" or "the mater"

naemates · 02/03/2022 21:09

My mum, unless I'm talking to my brother and then I say your mum Grin

Xanadu58 · 02/03/2022 21:11

I'd say my mum

Chatty987 · 02/03/2022 23:05

My mum. Gives me the edge when people say just “mum” “dad” as if it’s my parent too! Glad this ain’t just me OP!

SVRT19674 · 03/03/2022 12:06

Mami to my brother and my mother to absolutely everyone else under the sun. So yes, with the my to non siblings.

DoorLion · 03/03/2022 12:10

I just say mum or dad, and I don't think I am particularly self-obsessed nor did I think it was strange. "What did you do yesterday?" "I was at mum and dad's. Mum was telling me about xyz, dad was watching TV". I mean, who else's mum is it going to be?

DH says "my Mum" even when talking to his sister which I find weird.

GucciBear · 03/03/2022 12:10

Neither. I say Ma. I do find it irritating when people say "our" brother/sister/Mum. You would hardly be talking about another family in this contact. My neighbour does this: our Paul, our Dad.............

SpiderVersed · 03/03/2022 12:21

Mum if they know her, my mum if they don't.

Between ourselves, my brother and I will say me mum, me dad

eg - "I was going to do curry but you know what me mum's like, she doesn't do spicy"
