Favourite place in the USA?

We could go anywhere in the US for a few days next November before a trip.

Where would you go / have you been that we might not usually think of?

I’m not especially into shopping but would just like somewhere that’s good to wander around, see sights or museums, eat something good.

Monterey/Carmel sounds like it will fit your bill. Stunning coastal scenery but also beautiful shops and restaurants.

Also, Charleston, South Carolina I found magical!

CraftyGin · 28/12/2021 19:03

Vermont

Denver, Colorado. At the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Love it there. Very liberal, hip and trendy, voted the best place to live by fellow Americans

emmetgirl · 28/12/2021 19:05

Washington DC is a great city.

Frazzled2207 · 28/12/2021 19:06

Boston.

CraftyGin · 28/12/2021 19:06

It might sound a bit funny, but if you want to experience 'typical America', the I would go to Ohio.

Cleveland - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and world class art museum
Cincinnati - American history museums
Between Columbus and Cleveland - Amish country.

And in November, you will be in full leaf peeping mode.

Definitely agree with Monterey.
Also Alexandria is my favorite.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 28/12/2021 19:08

Boston

Sanibel/Captiva in SW Florida is lovely in November: warm enough to sunbathe on the beach & swim in the Gulf of Mexico. There's a sea shell museum & lots of restaurants on the island with fresh seafood on the menu.

StiltonIsLife · 28/12/2021 19:11

Boston, Chicago, or Key West/Miami.

Maine

WarmSausageTea · 28/12/2021 19:13

Boston, absolutely. Probably my favourite city in the world.

Stunning beaches and great food. The Edison and Ford winter estate is an interesting museum.

Charleston or Savannah. And in November, the weather is usually good.

Chewbecca · 28/12/2021 19:19

Oooh, this is perfect, thank you.

Boston the only reject so far, but only because I have been on more than one occasion already and want to go somewhere new. I love Boston.

Ohio I never would have thought of but needs further looking at as sounds just right.

Washington DC was already on my maybe list so good to see it recommended.

Monterey / Carmel - needed to look up on a map! California, oooh, interesting.

Washington brilliant for musuems and walks. Arlington Cemetery is a must

Pearlywunzel · 28/12/2021 19:20

San Diego definitely.

Chewbecca · 28/12/2021 19:28

Actually, I’m going to also rule out New England and Florida, having been to both, just a little. I need to narrow our choices down somehow!

I'd go to Utah, specifically Moab.

dreamingbohemian · 28/12/2021 19:36

Sorry but you have the whole US to choose from, don't go to Ohio! It's perfectly fine but there are so many more interesting places to go.

If you want museums and nice walks and good food, Washington DC is a great choice. But it will be a bit chilly so head farther south if you want nice weather. New Orleans maybe?

EwwSprouts · 28/12/2021 19:39

If you choose San Diego which has a lot to see, stay in La Jolla just up the coast. Very nice.

TorySteller · 28/12/2021 19:40

Another vote for Washington D.C.

Me and DH were so surprised by it. We only spent 2 days there and can’t wait to go back.

Or, I know it’s not very original, but New York City is my favourite place in the world. I could go there again and again and just wander.

Chewbecca · 28/12/2021 19:43

Not worried about the weather actually on this occasion.

I’ve never been to NYC so that was my initial plan, but I started to wonder if I should be more original!

Washington DC is doing well.

Just tried to see what Moab was an abbreviation for…
