Favourite place in the USA?

We could go anywhere in the US for a few days next November before a trip.

Where would you go / have you been that we might not usually think of?

I’m not especially into shopping but would just like somewhere that’s good to wander around, see sights or museums, eat something good.

New Orleans is the best place I've been in the USA (not that I've been to that many places!) We enjoyed the history, the food, bars, and did a guided walking tour.

custardcreme · 28/12/2021 20:48

NYC obviously

Cookerhood · 28/12/2021 21:03

New York is fabulous - one of my favourite cities. Not Las Vegas - my least favourite place on earth! Washington DC is great.

Vicliz24 · 28/12/2021 21:08

San Diego . The weather should be fabulous. There's an excellent transit service. Trains run up and down the coast to Oceanside and all stops between all day long . Balboa Park - so many beaches . La Jolla , Encinitas both stunning. Coronado and the magnificent Hotel Del just offshore. A stunning very walkable city . Close to Tijuana too if you fancy a side trip into Mexico. Honestly so much to see and do there .

RisingSunn · 28/12/2021 21:12

I was going to say Charleston - South Carolina but realised you only want direct flights.

TheFoldOx · 28/12/2021 21:17

The Canadian Border? Wink

Anoooshka · 28/12/2021 21:19

I live in the US and I'd go to New Orleans or maybe Miami. The weather will be pleasant in November and both cities are interesting in their own way.

Washington DC is ok (I lived there for 5 years) but weather in November can be miserable.

Chanel05 · 28/12/2021 21:21

Oh yes, New York is just breathtaking. So good they named it twice 😉.

Temple29 · 28/12/2021 21:27

Couldn’t recommend New Orleans enough, so much to see and do and nowhere quite like it. We drove from Texas, which was also brilliant.

We go to New York every year (pre Covid) and it’s definitely a must if you’ve never been.

mumofEandE · 28/12/2021 21:31

Another vote for Washington DC - fascinating place !
EVEN our stroppy / unimpressed teenager loved it!

Chewbecca · 28/12/2021 21:38

Thanks again, so much to think about! DC is still doing it for me, despite NYC’s pull.

We may be able to do DC and NY using the train.

I would like to go to New Orleans too but probably not this time.
Miami already visited, I like it but don’t love it, maybe I didn’t get it right.

In November I would go to the North East and enjoy the spectacle of the Autumn colours on the trees. So, Boston upwards into New England, Vermont etc. Truly spectacular, you will never forget it.

happychristmasbum · 28/12/2021 21:45

Another vote for DC.

I love it there, plus NYC, and northern CA.

I have recently heard really positive things from friends in AZ - Grand Canyon, Route 66, Cowboy Towns etc.

I quite fancy Boston.

gogohm · 28/12/2021 21:49

I love the Pacific Northwest but depending upon where you are off to next it might not make sense distance wise, New York is closer to London than Seattle

gogohm · 28/12/2021 21:50

Seattle has direct ba flights (or did pre covid)

Favourite place in the USA? +

The airport departure lounge back to civilisation!!!!

decafforme · 28/12/2021 22:02

San Francisco

WhiteXmas21 · 28/12/2021 22:03

Loved Santa Fe, NM and also loved Sedona , Arizona, although Phoenix and Scottsdale would give you more to see.

Sedona is hot but outdoorsy - hiking, flying, golf etc.
New Orleans is great. Seattle is a nice city too. And of course San Francisco .

Chewbecca · 28/12/2021 22:40

Have been to Seattle!

Huntington Beach, Ruby’s Diner at the end of the pier with a large milkshake.
Ive been going back for three years now and bloody COVID keeps cancelling.

My dad worked as a driver in the USA when I was a kid so as a teen he’d take me to some very off the beaten track places that weren’t touristy. Ive explored a lot of Arizona and Nevada that way. One place that sticks in my mind is Ghila Bend. Tiny town, nothing there but desert really, but it was a place we’d stop between Phoenix and LA and I always loved it.

Santa Barbara. Fabulous place.
