Brilliant film.

Shit ending. Completely useless addition.

Anyone else?

Loved it, I though it was really smart and the comet deniers were very relevant to today with COVID and climate change deniers. I thought the themes of ignoring the science, allowing billionaires to profit from the crisis and putting profit ahead of common sense are very relevant.

I’d missed the post credits scenes until now so thanks for those 😃

Diddytv · 04/01/2022 11:59

Thanks teebee good analogy

Centralperk88 · 04/01/2022 12:02

Loved it. It made me laugh but also scared me because I actually believe that's how it would happen. Everything is about money and social media these days and people think they know more than scientists.

Projectingmuch · 04/01/2022 12:02

I really liked it. I’m pretty bad with keeping my attention on films so i thought it was going to be too long, but it held my attention throughout. I agree with the American-centric criticism, but I always expect American films to be like that, so I had quite low expectations in that sense.
I think the fact that there wasn’t a really strong sense of impending doom was quite realistic as that’s how people are about climate change. Most people know that human lives and the planet are at huge risk, but it’s such a big thing to get your head round everyone just carries on as normal.

Inextremis · 04/01/2022 12:02

Wow. It's a film that's trying to awaken people to the fact that climate change is going to change our planet if we don't stop fannying around and do something (it may already be too late) - and people are critiquing the story structure? It's a scream of 'we're all going to fucking die!' that's being echoed by climate scientists worldwide - and it seems no one is listening.

At least we now have a slogan - don't look up.

CSJobseeker · 04/01/2022 12:04

The film was okay, and I liked the ending, but I thought it was hit and miss in parts.

Some parts were great satire and really hit the mark, other bits were so unreal and unbelievable that they were ridiculous (like when they get locked in a room at the White House with no access to a toilet, and the president's son says he'll put down newspaper for them.... really?!)

CSJobseeker · 04/01/2022 12:05

And I'm shocked that some people didn't notice the climate change allegory! It was very obvious.

MrsTophamHat · 04/01/2022 12:07

I thought it was good in that it was clearly based on the response to Covid and also pointing out the other threat of climate change.

Spectre8 · 04/01/2022 12:12

I enjoyed the movie but so sick of climate change being rammed down my throat I chose to ignore the allegory. I get it about climate change, I do what I can but literally do not need to be constantly bombarded about it day in day out. Especially when the biggest polluters of the world aren't doing enough.

Thorilicious · 04/01/2022 12:19

I enjoyed it, but had to watch it over 2 days to get through it.

Diddytv · 04/01/2022 12:20

Yes I am shocked people don’t like it. One of the best movies I ever saw. It is slightly annoying that it is so America focused but I think it was just to simplify the movie. Adding in interactions with other world leaders would have over complicated it.

I also liked that the dibiasky character was written off by everyone as crazy and hysterical. I worked in a male dominated industry and I know that feeling. If you do t remain completely calm in all your interactions with everyone you are labelled hysterical woman

Alayalaya · 04/01/2022 12:26

I think the movie missed the mark. Ok fair enough the government failed to act... but the movie didn’t appreciate that individual people had no power to do anything. Look up... don’t look up... makes no difference.

In terms of the allegory to climate change, yes we know it’s happening but it’s not within our power as individuals to stop it. For example I know my car is bad for the environment but jobs are in cities not locally and I have no choice but to drive to work. I have to buy the food that’s on the supermarket shelves even if it’s packaged in plastic because I need food. Climate change might kill me but lack of money and food will kill me sooner. That’s before you even consider that our efforts are utterly futile as long as China and India continue to develop and spew out pollution.

IntermittentParps · 04/01/2022 12:30

@Bluntness100

I thought it was quite good but not really understanding all this it’s soo relevant comments, it’s about a bloody commet hitting earth and if anyone remotely thinks America would be the only country to take the lead here, with only a brief mention of a couple of other countries, and we wouldn’t work together globally to remove the risk, and that there is some ship where folks are phoned at the last min to get on then they all front up naked, and they know the planets ability to sustain life but not about the animals they need to give their heads a wobble 😂😂😂
I think the point is that it's actually about the climate crisis. It's just that that is happening (relatively) slowly; if you turn it into a comet instead you can speed it up. The principles of politicians politicking about it, scientists being silenced or ignored, the media trivialising or not understanding it, individuals trying to warn us getting ridiculed or vilified etc, are all present and correct in the current conversation about the climate crisis. Many climate scientists have been on SM saying it's basically a documentary.
Diddytv · 04/01/2022 12:31

I don’t think it was preaching at the general public though. The general public are powerless and we need governments to take control. Just as with the comet. And we do all give up caring as there is nothing we can do, which was what was happening in the movie. It was all exaggerated for comic effect.

I don’t particularly see it as trying to reach the public and tell us to wake up.

IntermittentParps · 04/01/2022 12:33

And I want to know if Meryl Streep really has a tramp-stamp tattoo (I don't care if you're offended at the terminology) in real life.
Me too! And I think some of the others had tattoos in that scene too.

lljkk · 04/01/2022 14:06

This story suggests the tat is genuine... but Streep has sported fake tats in other movies, too.

Diddytv · 04/01/2022 14:21

I thought she used a body double?

longtompot · 04/01/2022 14:59

We watched it last night and though enjoyed it, felt it was a bit flat,
De Caprio was brilliant, very Leonard from BBT, and Jennifer Lawrence was was fantastic, as were Streep and Blanchett.
I loved the meal they made and ate together, savouring every mouthful of food and wine.
We felt the film could have been either a bit more of a black comedy as there weren't very many 'funny' moments, or should have been much darker. It reminded me a bit of This is The End.

IntermittentParps · 04/01/2022 16:21

there weren't very many 'funny' moments
Confused
My household and I were laughing at nothing then. It was sustainedly funny IMO, sometimes giddily so, but balanced that really well with the black-comedy and sober elements.

hopeishere · 04/01/2022 17:37

Dreadful. Such big names and it was still shite.

lljkk · 04/01/2022 17:56

i believe that 'satire' is considered a difficult balancing act genre.

I'm curious... those of you who thought it was mediocre or shite, what films do you like/recommend instead ? @hopeisthere @TeeBee @drpet49 @Happylittlethoughts @TippledPink @heelforheelandtoefortoe @ilovebagpuss
