Brilliant film.

Shit ending. Completely useless addition.

Anyone else?

Not a patch on his other film I loved - The Big Short

I liked di Caprio and Blanchett but that’s about it

BeefnHorseradish · 28/12/2021 20:44

Whole family enjoyed it.

Frazzled2207 · 28/12/2021 20:45

@Roarsomemore

Watched it last night and left me feeling anxious about the destructive nature of capitalism. I normally watch very light TV and found this full on.
It pretty much summed up everything that my anti-capitalist eco-warrior dh has ever taught me
0blio · 28/12/2021 20:51

I loved it and thought it was very clever.

BikesGoInTheShed · 28/12/2021 20:52

DS was very into the anti capitalist message too. He says the first bit in the credits, was to show that as soneone said above, that the capitalists dont actually get away with it all.

I loved the meal scene. Perfect.

I loved it - all of it.

DoncasterHombre · 28/12/2021 23:53

I enjoyed it because I like a bit of "doom porn"/end of the world type films. A-list actors and Hollywood can go fuck themselves in terms of preaching about anti-capitalism/lefty/woke messages to the hoi polloi though.

And I want to know if Meryl Streep really has a tramp-stamp tattoo (I don't care if you're offended at the terminology) in real life.

CoedenNadolig · 29/12/2021 00:07

Just finished watching it.

I enjoyed it overall, and I think it did a good job of portraying how politics, the media and capatalism can detract from an important message, be decisive and polarise people. To the point where nothing gets done and our fate is sealed.

CovidCorvid · 29/12/2021 00:17

Do you think most people, will get the global warming message or just think it’s yet another comet destroys the world film?

rooarsome · 29/12/2021 00:24

I loved it. The ending was very sobering (also the quick shot of the baby having a bath made me tear up).
The question is though, why did the general charge for the snacks?

Deadringer · 29/12/2021 01:29

I just finished watching it and thought it was great, and i loved the ending. I had never heard of it though, so it was a pleasant surprise.

CovidCorvid · 29/12/2021 10:33

I can’t work out the charging for snacks thing either. Was it just to give JL’s character something else to appear paranoid about?

Oddly I’ve just been reading The Only Plane In The Sky about the aftermath of 9/11. One of the journalists who was on Air Force One that day as it was zipping about the country on a longer than planned journey as they didn’t go back to Washington said how it made her laugh that a week later she received an invoice for all the food she’d consumed on board that day. But apparently even the President is charged monthly for the food he eats in the White House. 🤷‍♀️

Fhee · 29/12/2021 10:40

I think it was to show the rich and powerful messing with people for shits and giggles.

Daisy829 · 29/12/2021 10:57

I enjoyed it & I didn’t think I would. Thought it was quite clever and a little bit worrying as you can imagine that it’s not that far from reality.

Frazzled2207 · 29/12/2021 11:51

There is another thread running and it would appear that metaphor passed by a lot of people. I don’t think it’s “just” about climate change though, you could apply it to any crisis, covid included. Everyone far too focussed on money and vacuous social media nonsense to actually realise what’s going on around them and what’s important.
Littlewhiteballs · 29/12/2021 11:56

I think the weird ending was to illustrate the "there is no planet b" message.

VaguelyInteresting · 29/12/2021 12:03

The very fact that we could watch it and “enjoy” it - which I did and did- was part of the message though, surely?

It was all quite meta... which I find irritating and engaging in equal parts.

TheVolturi · 29/12/2021 12:33

I really liked it. Was quite emotional at the meal scene. It's made me feel uneasy because it really is too close to home.
One thing really annoyed me, the fact that it made out that the USA took full control of the save the world mission, what did the UK do? Sit back and watch?

YungWaffle · 29/12/2021 12:42

The best review I've read was something like "if Gal Gadot's rendition of Imagine were a 2 hour long movie".

I get what they were trying to do it, it was just a bit too silly to pull it off.

The preaching also never looks good when it comes from actors.
Someone who unwinds by taking private jets to tropical destinations and cavorting with models on yachts (maybe they run on solar energy, I don't know) telling people who unwind by watching crap movies on netflix that they're destroying the world with their plebeian ignorance.

I'm not saying that I necessarily see it that way, but it's east to see how the message comes across in that way

Frazzled2207 · 29/12/2021 12:51

@YungWaffle

I honestly don’t see it that way at all. It was most of all critical of governments failing to work together in the best interests of the people and the disproportionate power held by the rich and powerful.

Dicaprio has done an awful lot over the years to promote environmental issues. I don’t think his lifestyle is anywhere near as extravagant as many others.

Agree on this but the UK has no space programme so wouldn’t realistically have been able to do much. Hopefully if this scenario occurred the EU would have had some clout though. Fairly sure the UK would not!
DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 29/12/2021 12:55

I thought it needed a good editor. The first hour was great: tight, really funny, clever. And then it just went a bit off on a tangent. Overall I liked it but it was flabby.

DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 29/12/2021 12:57

Oh and I really loved the thing where the President was “saving the world” and launching the rockets and they had the red, white and blue fireworks and the band striking up the national anthem. Was spot on, couldn’t help but feel that was exactly how it might go down (and definitely would have if Trump had been the president when it happened!)

TheVolturi · 29/12/2021 13:24

Yes I know that, but we were not included at all, as in even having any input. You'd think the world leaders would all meet and discuss not just USA controlling it all.

CoedenNadolig · 29/12/2021 14:06

But the UN were thinking of a plan, the UN are always "thinking" India, Russia and China's plan was thwarted by a "explosion" just before take off. I took that as not a malfunction of their effort but a "hit" by the US to stop other leaders interference in their trillion dollar plan.

It demonstrated that the world can't and won't work together, that previously the US under some leadership has disengaged with the UN. That world leaders can't and won't come together to overcome a crisis a bit like certain nations refusal to engage in the recent climate change summit when it is in fact their countries who are super polution powerhouses.

It's clear that it was heavy on USA saves the day, because the US historically have a hero complex.
