Brilliant film.

Shit ending. Completely useless addition.

Anyone else?

It was disappointing. Far too woke.

Started off good then got pretty crap.

Powerpotpie · 29/12/2021 14:38

I enjoyed it but I feel it lost itself in places and my attention wandered - They could have taken a good 20 minutes out of the middle and I don’t think it would have been missed.

drpet49 · 29/12/2021 14:47

Shit film given the cast

ouch321 · 29/12/2021 15:09

Not good. Watched the first hour and gave up. People on here were saying it was good so put it back on to watch till the end in case it improved. It did not.

Queenoftrivialpersuit · 29/12/2021 15:32

I don’t know how much control of the film grande had. But her scene was way too long.

Laiste · 29/12/2021 16:15

I liked it. But it is yet another ''America is the only country ... full stop'' based film.

The meal scene was moving.

I'm always totally fascinated and distracted by Timothee Chalamet and this film was no exception.

Yes totally this, I wish he'd been in it for a bit longer, but he has such brilliant screen presence.

eveningbubble · 29/12/2021 17:29

well I won't watch it now, nothing worse than giving 2 hours to something and then utterly crap ending. Can I help anyone who wants to watch 2 great sounding concepts as movies:

Wakefield

and

Downsizing

Never ever bother watching them.

SudokuRules · 29/12/2021 22:32

The thing that got me was, why do America get the comets resources? Like surely noone owns space?

Kitsinthehood · 29/12/2021 22:38

I thought it was great. Very dark. The only actor I didn't like was Jonah Hill, he plays the same character in everything. Jennifer Lawrence was terrific.

The end credit scene on the new planet made me laugh - firstly as they were so unbothered by the fact only 58% of the escapees had survived, and secondly that all the ones you saw (or I saw at least) were clearly too old to repopulate the human race. Pure selfishness on the part of the super rich who were able to escape.

"I fucking love fingerling potatoes!" Grin

Xtraincome · 29/12/2021 23:37

Excellent film. One of the best I've watched in ages. It was funny and smart. Merely Streep aced being a massive twat of a president. Loved it all, especially the Bronterac as I wanted the president to die!

Loved it! Didn't find it too long. It was our 'day after boxing day' breakfast movie. Watched with 16 year old who enjoyed it as well

EurghCobwebs · 30/12/2021 09:49

@Bluntness100

I thought it was quite good but not really understanding all this it’s soo relevant comments, it’s about a bloody commet hitting earth and if anyone remotely thinks America would be the only country to take the lead here, with only a brief mention of a couple of other countries, and we wouldn’t work together globally to remove the risk, and that there is some ship where folks are phoned at the last min to get on then they all front up naked, and they know the planets ability to sustain life but not about the animals they need to give their heads a wobble 😂😂😂
Politics during a pandemic Climate change Reliance on social media Riots Celebrity culture News reporting and propaganda

The list is endless on how it is relevant.

ParadiseLaundry · 03/01/2022 13:31

Something I've been wondering about this film since I saw it a few days ago...

So using his clever death prediction algorithms, the Tech Guy said that Meryl Streep's character would die by being eaten alive by a bronterac, which was amazing accurate... but said that Leo DiCaprio's character would die such a mundane death he couldn't remember what it was... surely if the algorithms identified a species on a planet 22 thousand years away surely they would have identified that the comet was going to hit the Earth and almost everyone would die!?

Lweji · 03/01/2022 13:43

It's a parable in many ways.

The endings are meant to say that even those who survive, are not likely to be in a better place than those who don't, IMO.

Not an amazing movie, but certainly more watchable than a documentary. Grin I think there are lots of layers worth exploring.

FlowerFlour · 03/01/2022 15:28

I just didn't understand it. He's a 4 star General who works in the White House, why would he charge for snacks?

HPLikecraft · 03/01/2022 16:26

Watched it last night, loved it! Loved the ending, too. Twatty president being eaten, and no one much caring, was very satisfying.

And L Di C is always good.

Unbelievable. Can we also get your take on Animal Farm and Gulliver's Travels?

'I liked the cute donkey but there's no way animals could take over a farm like that, they're not clever enough! Unrealistic.' 😂

'So this Gulliver expects us to believe there are actual islands with tiny people, giants and talking horses?!? I've looked at a map and the countries he mentions don't appear ANYWHERE. I think he made the whole thing up. Also there's no way people that tiny could have taken him prisoner.'

Woodlandwater · 04/01/2022 11:38

I liked it but found it unsettling. I find climate change makes me so anxious I have to block myself away from it and wasn't expecting to have to mull this film over so much after watching it. It's given me a knot in my stomach and made me want to find some kind of plan b for my DC. Perhaps a rocket to the moon and a stick to bat away aliens?

TeeBee · 04/01/2022 11:40

Irritating as hell. Don't see the hype. I went and emptied the dishwasher for the last 40 minutes...it was way more interesting.

Diddytv · 04/01/2022 11:44

I loved it and found it very relevant to todays culture. It wasn’t really about a comet hitting earth.

But I didn’t really realise why the general charged for the snacks? Was it about how some people let power go to their heads?

lljkk · 04/01/2022 11:56

I liked the 'addition' -- you knew what would happen, and that was fine. Totally fit with rest of the film.

I can agree that it was maybe 10 minutes too long. I suppose I didn't like Dibiasky getting together with the under-achiever, but it was plausible development, too. And he had his moment to shine, so fine in end. The instant deaths didn't fit... I'm pretty sure many would take months to die (think The Road )

Woodlandwater · 04/01/2022 11:58

Isn't it because some people are just chancers no matter where they are in life?

TeeBee · 04/01/2022 11:58

I read it that even in the midst of this mind-blowingly disastrous news discovered by two brilliant scientists, there will always be someone devoid of morality trying to make a quick side-buck from it. A parallel that can be drawn with Tory mates getting contracts for millions selling PPE during the pandemic.
