Encanto

Yesterday we watched Encanto on Disney +. Three out of four loved it, the other hated it. Personally I thought it was one of the weakest Disney movies I've seen (althoughI didn'tsay it and faked well!!)- the storyline was weak, the music sounded that little bit off and the ending wasn't great. I don't know, I think I'm just annoyed that because something is advertised/pushed and trending we always jump for it. Family movie time is so limited and we could have been watching something 10 times better! Has anyone else seen it? Do I just have really bad taste?

I thought it was pretty weak but on the same sort of level as Luca, Soul or Onward. I don't think Disney is producing great content right now

WoodenReindeer · 27/12/2021 01:21

I thought it was rubbish and so wanted to like it. I quite liked luca and onward. I like lin manuel miranda too..... but no it was just weird and boring and no catchy songs either. Waste of a few hours.

HugeAckmansWife · 27/12/2021 02:02

It's not in the same league as Lion King or Frozen but perfectly OK. My kids liked it and I think a lot of the songs are quite hummable.. We don't talk about Bruno and Pressure. I could tell its LMM... I could see the Schylar sisters from Hamilton singing some of them!

I saw it in the cinema and I thought it was fine. We had a few hours to kill in town and I suppose my expectations were low, but I was more engaged than I expected to be. I think that big screen helped. Like in Frozen, there was a lot going on visually in some of the songs.

mowglika · 27/12/2021 02:38

I watched it the other day with my dc, I didn’t really get it and neither did they. The whole thing about Bruno probably went over a lot of kids heads. Thought it was rubbish!

gumball37 · 27/12/2021 04:16

We really like it. Watched it in the theater and now twice at home too. My 5 yr old loves the pressure song.

Notthisnotthat · 27/12/2021 05:05

We saw it at that cinema and loved it.

RainbowMum11 · 27/12/2021 05:06

It reminded me to Moana in parts.
DD8 was desperate to see it and I quite enjoyed it but it wasn't amazing.

User2638483 · 27/12/2021 05:17

I didn’t think it was great. I don’t love moana either but at least there are catchy songs in that. None of the encanto ones are memorable.
And yes storyline was totally weak.
Not a patch on some of their others.
Watched frozen last night with dd and reminded of how good it is in terms of story and music
Also after pp post am wondering if some Bruno stuff went over my head!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/12/2021 05:52

Thought it was terrible, didn't even get to the end we switched it off, very grateful we didn't spend £££ going to the cinema to see it last month!

MaryBoBary · 27/12/2021 05:54

We were disappointed too. I lost interest towards the end and I usually love Disney films. It was dull and the songs are rubbish.

k4523 · 27/12/2021 06:05

Loved it

NeilTheBaby · 27/12/2021 06:10

I thought it was rubbish. My 7 year old loved it. She has since watched it about 3 times in Disney+ (we saw it in the cinema originally) and keeps replaying the 'don't talk about Bruno' song scene.

iloveayankeecandle · 27/12/2021 06:32

Didn't like it, or soul. That was just weird too. Did enjoy Luca though!

stayathomer · 27/12/2021 07:03

I think I thought there was so much potential. The kids had been calling it the magic house film and the magic bit was done so well I was just gutted it didn'tlive up to what it could have been. I'm glad they enjoyed it, and yay to all the people who enjoyed or their kids enjoyed it in the cinema

I really didn’t love it either. The kids liked it though.

MangoSeason · 27/12/2021 07:10

I found it really dull. Lovely animation though.

The story was so weak- the shtick was that the family uses their powers to help the village. But aside from the strong sister and a bit of decorating from the flower sister, how did any of the others help? Eavesdropping, shape-shifting, future reading, uncontrollable weather making dependent on your emotions? Talking to the animals? Nice party tricks but just how were they helping and protecting the village? Made no sense.

MangoSeason · 27/12/2021 07:13

And why did the grandfather’s sacrifice at the beginning lead to a magic candle and house? What was the link? Was the ground the grandmother on already magic and his sacrifice triggered something?

UserError012345 · 27/12/2021 07:16

My DD fell asleep watching it.

Tabbacus · 27/12/2021 07:18

I don't think any of their films have been that good for quite some time.

chalkyc2 · 27/12/2021 07:20

Yes we watched it and my 20 yr old left the room...which I thought was a bit of an overreaction. It was fine. Forgettable.

Better I have to say than Clifford the Big Red Dog....which we saw at the cinema!! Best so far was the Boy called Christmas.

Anything else worth watching?

chalkyc2 · 27/12/2021 07:21

10 yr old!!! Haha I wouldn't make a 20 yr old sit through it!!

TravellingSpoon · 27/12/2021 08:00

This is exactly how I felt.

I thoight it was awful, the music was terrible and it was way too long with nothing happening, much like Luca. I dont think Disney have released anything good since Moana.

RedLemon · 27/12/2021 08:10

I kept waiting for the story to “begin”- the quest that I figured Mirabelle would need to go on to end up making peace with her sister and healing the family etc. But then she has a single song with her sister which starts with her trying to con her into a hug and then suddenly switches to them solving all their differences, finding out what truly matters, and hugging?!

Pile o’ shite I’m afraid.

Will make note of the Boy called Christmas!

Everything I wondered!!!!
