Ever gone away for a week and forgotten to take your tablets with you? I think by the time I make it home I will have not taken it for 8 days.

Disaster or tolerable?

but I am fairly non compliant. What's your dose?

Umbongoumbongo999 · 26/12/2021 23:23

That should have said tolerable

Mrsmadevans · 26/12/2021 23:26

I wouldn't worry too much.

Depends how high a dose you're on. Try asking a local pharmacist/gp/nhs direct, they should be able to get your an emergency supply.

Sunsetsupernova · 26/12/2021 23:28

I’ve done two days before and felt pretty rubbish after that. Mainly the absolute exhaustion that I used to feel before I started taking it. However, I’m on a fairly heavy dose so that would probably make a difference if your dosage is low.

nocoolnamesleft · 26/12/2021 23:29

I'd feel dreadful in that time. But as my thyroid has been removed, I have no residual thyroxine production at all. Agree with talking to a local pharmacy.

Sunsetsupernova · 26/12/2021 23:29

Are you abroad or in the U.K.? I’ve definitely called NHS direct before and they’ve sent me an emergency prescription to a local pharmacy where I was

SirVixofVixHall · 26/12/2021 23:29

Well you might have a couple of weeks feeling dire as your levels drop and then creep up again. Depends on what your dose is and how you react . I notice the difference if I miss one dose, I couldn’t cope with eight days.
Can you get an emergency prescription sent to a local chemist ?

Guttedbuyer · 26/12/2021 23:29

Wish I could remember to take it at all!

Scrooge89 · 26/12/2021 23:31

I feel awful in 1 day! I take 150mcg, I called my own GPs and asked for a prescription to be sent to a local pharmacy to where we were holidaying in the Lakes (obvs I checked first with the pharmacy that they took electronic prescriptions). Sorted! Picked up my supply later that day

CluelessHamster · 26/12/2021 23:32

I can (and often do!) miss one day but I'd start to feel ropey by day two and wouldn't want to risk 8 days. I'm on 125mg.

If you've not been taking it for long and are in a low dose, you might get away with it.

If in the UK, a pharmacist could give you an emergency prescription. My dd forgot her antidepressants once and it was very straightforward to get a weeks supply from a pharmacist.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/12/2021 23:34

I always have a 14 day supply in my washbag but you can get emergency rations from a pharmacy. No need to suffer.

KronkeyCroc · 26/12/2021 23:34

I’m in the UK. I take 125mg. not sure if that is high medium or low. I could go back and get it but it’s a 3 hour round trip which would t be much fun. Maybe I’ll pop into the local pharmacy and have a chat. Probably not open until Wednesday now.

This is what happens when I pack in a rush!
Thanks for the replies, sounds like I’ll probably be feeling pretty shit if I leave it that long.

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 26/12/2021 23:37

depends. I only take it because a routine blood test showed I need it apparently. But I feel no different whether I take it or not. So there will be a huge range of answers from people it makes a big difference to, to people like me. Maybe it depends on the dose.

catblanket · 26/12/2021 23:38

My consultant told me that the half life is about 5 days, so when I had surgery recently I could miss a whole week and not really notice it too badly. I did indeed miss a week and I was fine.

AnyFucker · 26/12/2021 23:39

I take 100mcg and would easily manage for that time

Levels take a while to build up so will not immediately plummet

This is probably bad but I double up 12 hours apart for a few days and have never had a problem (don’t take this as advice, just my personal experience)

Tbh though, my hypothyroidism was discovered incidentally. I have never had symptoms

Nextlevelnonsense · 26/12/2021 23:41

I don't have a thyroid gland, but I can manage 5 days without any big problem.
If you're abroad, you can sometimes get it OTC.

Redjumper1 · 26/12/2021 23:43

That would affect me and so I would talk to a pharmacist and/or GP. One/two days would be fine. I'm on same dose.

GrumpyPanda · 26/12/2021 23:49

I'm on 150, thyroid is totally shot. I recently missed a couple weeks because of a snafu over prescriptions. Did check with our- very good - local pharmacist but he assured me its nothing to get worried about. Tbh haven't felt any effect one way or another personally.

CJat10 · 26/12/2021 23:54

Staying near anyone you know? Ask if they take it, it's very common and you could borrow?

Magnited · 27/12/2021 00:06

Exactly this ^

I went 18 months at well below normal limits, accidentally. After about 4 months you start to feel the effects, not one week.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2021 00:10

CJat10 the op can't exactly borrow it - it has to be returned if it's borrowed. Sorry, couldn't resist.

OP I popped to Asda today and the pharmacy was open there. Perhaps try a big supermarket.

GregTheEgg · 27/12/2021 00:19

Virtually no thyroid function here. I was on 150mcg and would have felt a bit tired after 3-4 days but the worst symptoms were more of a long term issue and wouldn’t have shown up within a week. I now take natural thyroid hormone instead which wears off more quickly so notice if I miss even a day.

AnnaSW1 · 27/12/2021 00:20

Yes I've gone on holiday and forgotten it. It was fine
