I am, totally. I love Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It has many layers of family significance for us. If I'm bored, depressed or stressed I will always listen to the soundtrack and feel better. I've seen it do many times in done many theatres, performed in ut, been the director as a teacher, watched my dad direct it when he was a teacher. Nothing else comes close!

Can't pick one, but top three for me are Groundhog Day, Hamilton and Rocky Horror Picture Show 😊

Gigglebiscuit · 26/12/2021 22:47

Anyone here heard the Unofficial Bridgerton musical? I've really enjoyed that.

As a teenager, I was completely obsessed with Phantom. I used to watch almost every musical back then. Seven Brides, Gigi, My Fair Lady, etc.

As an adult, I love Les Mis, and the music of Six (haven't seen it), and the puppet one, which is hilarious.

Got obsessed with Hamilton during first lockdown when it was released on Disney+. Still listen to the soundtrack all the time. I’m not sure I could see it live though, it just wouldn’t live up to my expectations!

The live stage show is way, way better than the one with lin Manuel miranda. Dh is a huge fan of the one on Disney + and he was blown away by seeing it live. I wasnt a huge fan due to LMM voice being so weak and it's now my second favourite after the lion king. Having a really strong singer play the part of Hamilton just elevated the whole thing.

No

@Rainallnight

Great thread. Cabaret for me, though went through a major Evita phase in my early teens and still love the soundtrack.
Yes, Evita for me too. Has got me through some tough times!!!
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/12/2021 22:55

I'd love to come to your funeral! Grin

It's usually whichever musical I saw last on stage or film. Atm thats waitress (I LOVE opening up). Before that it was book of mormon.

Does anyone else find that they never really like the main theme song best?
Joseph - any dream will do not as good as go go go joseph. Waitress she used to be mine not as good as it only takes a taste or very good bad idea. Hamilton LOVE the king george songs. Anything goes not as good as I get a kick out of you.

SamDees · 26/12/2021 22:55

I love the musicals of Stephen Sondheim. He is the master of the art form and no one else comes close.
Merrily We Roll Along is my absolute favourite- the time structure is perfection and I find it impossible to watch without sobbing - both for the characters and for the sheer beauty of the music and lyrics.
I also love Company, Sunday In The Park... and Into The Woods, but NOT the movie. Abomination.

Wigeon · 26/12/2021 22:59

@Snowisfalling33 - we went to New York three years ago and saw The Prom ON BROADWAY!!! Which was very cool although I wouldn’t say it’s in my top top musicals. Being in an American audience was funny though - very different to a London West End audience.

My nostalgic favourite: Joseph because my sister and I had a tape of it and spent hours acting and singing it all the way through. Then it was my year 6 production although I still resent the fact that I was just in the chorus and wasn’t one of the brothers (I’m female but it was an all-girls school).

Then now also: Les Mis, Hamilton, Phantom. Whatever life situation, or any daily occurrence, trivial or serious, there’s already a quote from one of those which is apt.

Also DH and I are quite good at talking to the DC using lines from them. Eg if they start scrapping, they usually get “What is this shouting all about, this is a ho-ussse not a circus, now come on ladies settle down, I am the dad [mum] of this town!”. And so on.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 26/12/2021 23:01

I will also post my controversial opinion.

Am lucky to live just outside london and have seen a lot of these shows-

loathe Phantom, Cats and Joseph although saw as a mum on a school trip but still and saw a dreadful Kinky boots. Love Les Mis but the last time we saw it it was poor

DD was obsessed with Hamilton hand have seen numerous times-was sceptical-think absolutely amazing.

For the PP who posted about 7 Brides-saw in Regents park Open Air theatre and loved it!!

A very underrated show imo was Made in dagenham-loved it.

But DH absolute fav was Girl from the North Country

supposed to be seeing Come from Away this week but suspect we won't...

Comefromaway · 26/12/2021 23:06

I think it’s a real shame Made in Dagenham closed so early.

choosername1234 · 26/12/2021 23:07

Billy Elliott - stage show not the film (although the film is good too). The music and dramatic dancing captures the tensions during the miners strikes

DriveInSaturday · 26/12/2021 23:24

Cabaret for me. The killer is 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me'. A cosy scene turns sinister really quickly, and what's worse is that the tune is so catchy, you find yourself humming it. And the ending is so bleak because you know what's coming next.

On a brighter note, I loved Bat out of Hell. I saw it twice, in Manchester and London. I have to admit I can sing along to all of it, but out of consideration for the rest of the audience and particularly DS, I didn't. At the interval, the guy behind me said, 'This is the maddest thing I've ever seen in the theatre.'

Snowisfalling33 · 26/12/2021 23:26

@Wigeon I'm so jealous!!

SarahDippity · 26/12/2021 23:32

Loved The Book of Mormon - funnier than I could ever describe and the choral work was fantastic. Matilda was fantastic, amazing interpretation by Tim Minchin. Les Mis for bombast … but my all time favourite is Singing in the Rain (I wouldn’t be a fan of the huge water wastage on the last staging, but the singing, the dancing, it’s just JOY for me)

Me too. I think my favourite is A Little Night Music.
Ginandplatonic · 26/12/2021 23:37

I have to agree with those who aren’t Lloyd-Webber fans. I loved them when I was a kid but now find them overblown and excessive. Except JC Superstar and Evita. Still love them.

NotEnoughTime · 26/12/2021 23:45

A few on here have mentioned South Pacific-there is going to be a production touring next year :) I can't wait.

My favourite musical ever was Billy Elliot-saw it on stage a few times with a few different Billy's and loved them all.

byronicheroine · 26/12/2021 23:47

As a child I was also obsessed with Joseph, and used to belt out the line "may I return, to the beginning" and then do just that. Repeat. On a tape! I had a version from before the Jason Donovan one which was far superior.

As an adult I enjoyed Book of Mormon and Matilda

user1471548941 · 26/12/2021 23:50

I have been coming back to Les Mis since I was having a hard time at uni 10 years ago. I got the 25th Anniversary DVD for Christmas and it was the first thing I was back to see post lockdown.

I first saw a touring production age 20 and it moved me to tears several times in both acts. It was also the last thing I saw pre lockdown- the staged concert, with Ball, Boe, Fletcher and Lucas.

I feel incredibly lucky to have seen it with that cast and I will be very surprised if I ever see anything as good on the stage. About 8 visits later, I still cry in different places every time.

colouringindoors · 26/12/2021 23:54

Loved Les Mis and Miss Saigon when younger. Also My Fair Lady!

More recently took dd to see Dear Evan Hansen and enjoyed it loads more than I expected!!

toomuchlaundry · 27/12/2021 00:00

Les Mis and Mamma Mia are probably the ones I have seen the most.

Also love Return to the Forbidden Planet

NationMcKinley · 27/12/2021 00:00

Rocky Horror is the greatest musical of all time ever. Love it.

FlowerTink · 27/12/2021 00:01

Six is amazing, the soundtrack is constantly on repeat on my Spotify.

The Lion King is amazing in person, particularly the opening scene! I cried a lot!

I also liked Matilda, Mamma Mia and Dear Evan Hansen.

Gigglebiscuit · 27/12/2021 00:07

@Invasionofthegutsnatchers

Ong Bridgerton musical?! Will there be muff diving? 😄
Grin No muff diving that I am aware of! At the moment it's only a soundtrack. Not done by the makers of Bridgerton series. But some of the songs are really catchy - Burn For You sung by Simon and Daphne, If I Were A Man sung by Eloise, and Just Penelope Featherington sung by PF, are probably my favourites.
