Things I have already been told off for (and it’s only Christmas Eve)

Is anyone else already in trouble with their parents? As a fully grown, otherwise responsible adult?

I’ve been at my lovely parents for approximately 4 hours. I am delighted to be here and to be able to spend it with them. Truly I am.

However, I have thus far:

Drank my glass of Buck’s Fizz too quick.

Ordered gravy with my chip shop order. ‘Oh you didn’t!’ My father was asked to weigh in. Apparently it was marginally better when I said I would only dip the chips, not the fish.

And the real kicker, I admitted to eating a quiche that was a day past it’s use by date. This led to a genuine telling off. Quiche is ‘terrible stuff, awful’ and ‘you mustn’t do that’ and ‘oh EduCated, why would you do that?’. It appears to have been taken as a personal slight that I would play so fast and loose with my digestion. I have not yet contracted botulism, but I’m assured it’s only a matter of time.

Sadly I don’t have DP with me to distract them, as we went for a divide and conquer approach with the families. Please tell me I’m not the only one in trouble?!

Being told off by grandparents for 'spoiling the mood' for not having a Christmas eve drink with everyone.
That would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that I am their designated driver for getting them home.

Iputthetrampintrampoline · 24/12/2021 21:25

Nope you are not alone, I got in to trouble for answering back! Also for my dds christmas present, parent thought it was inappropriate,I and more importantly dd do not think so! There will be many more tomorrow I am sure! What is wrong with these people?

missbunnyrabbit · 24/12/2021 21:27

Oh yes, I'm back at my parents and apparently I have already been 'mean' to my sister.

Whadda · 24/12/2021 21:36

I hear ya, OP.

Every issue today has been around food- my parents berating me for eating too much and also not eating enough. A lifetime of eating disorder related memories are flooding back.

BoPeeple · 24/12/2021 22:02

My fridge is apparently too full. 🤷‍♀️

gavisconismyfriend · 24/12/2021 22:15

I’m permanently in trouble 🙄

KatyN · 24/12/2021 22:23

My sister is staying with my folks 5 minutes from us. Apparently they have just put her (not empty) wine glass in the dishwasher and declared it time for bed
At 9:30

AngelsEyeball · 24/12/2021 22:25

I used to get mother’s rolled eyes at me because I didn’t drink more than a mouthful of wine… I hate seeing people drunk. In my teens She was pissed every Sunday, most Saturday evenings. Dad pissed every Sunday ‘just popping down the pub for 1’ before coming home shit faced at 2pm, mother in a mood so would drink 2 bottles of wine. Ridiculous

TwistedOlivers · 24/12/2021 22:28

I got told by my Mother last year that I was 'fucking boring' because......
I didn't want pudding after my Xmas dinner

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 24/12/2021 22:29

Is it so awful of my after a lifetime of Christmas's with alcoholic parents to say I don't miss them at this time of year?

FadedRed · 24/12/2021 22:33

I stole this from another thread last year and attach it to many threads on here, so apologies if you have already seen it.
Otherwise: print out, frame and refer to at times of need.

My mum has dementia and I'm stating at hers over Christmas. She never used to swear. She has just told me to piss off home because I told her she couldn't sleep in her top and dressing gown but she had to put her nightie on. She's in her favourite pink nightie in bed dozing now and butter wouldn't melt. 🙄 😁

Sounds very familiar I feel your pain
Millenial · 24/12/2021 22:43

Last year my grandmother complained that the size of the plates we used for Christmas dinner was “ridiculous” - far too big for her appetite so it was off putting

Whadda · 24/12/2021 22:47

And now some cunt* has eaten all of the little Twixes out of the Celebrations.

*I am that cunt.

Holy smokes

Faretheewellmyfairyfay · 24/12/2021 22:56

You are not alone.

I was questioned and disagreed with on Tuesday in a similar way, as though I am, at best, a very naive young adult* under their supervision. By some people who are not even my own parents! This happens every time I see them and spoils my enjoyment of the food and company.

I often wonder what will happen if I start asking them similar types of question? Maybe next year will be the year we find out?

Sheesh.

*My own children are adults!

mrscee · 24/12/2021 23:10

I got in trouble off my mum for being defensive I didn't think I was. I had to leave both her and my h who was telling me off for using the largest saucepan to make lasagne in and then telling to me to find something that he'd imagined we had for the Christmas table and I must know where it was.

Crimeismymiddlename · 24/12/2021 23:13

Just been told off for using the ‘wrong’ plug socket. When asked why it is wrong-apparently it just is.

SeaToSki · 24/12/2021 23:13

I should just ‘sit down and stop rushing about’. Well if I did that then no one would have any dinner as they wont get off their arses to do anything. And ‘could you top up my glass’. Well I have to stand up to do that dont I. And breathe

WhatsUpDrWhoChristmasSpecial · 24/12/2021 23:15

I've just been told off by my 9 year old for not being in bed yet. Apparently I should be and us adults should not be chatting. He was totally serious and very horrible and angry. 🤬

ChoccySprinkles · 24/12/2021 23:21

I dared to get the in laws a personalised photo calendar of their grandchild. How dare I, they’ve already got 3 calendars for 2022

EduCated · 24/12/2021 23:34

Sympathies to those of you dealing with unwanted and unhelpful food and drink comments Brew people can be so…delightful.

Tbf, @Whadda, Twixes have no place in a tub of celebrations, so you’re welcome to them!

This is quite a dark thing to say but my bio family have all died in the last few years so I can sit back and snort into my Pepsi when DH family make comments at him. Except for his Nan who called me fat in 8 different ways, it was really entertaining as I ate my 3rd slice of cheesecake. Merry Christmas Grin
