Are a lot of skiers like this?

We decided to go to Austria for Christmas. We wanted to do lots of hiking and have good food in the evenings. We have gone to this particular resort in Austria for summer holidays but have never gone in the winter. We couldn't manage to get the hotel we liked but were assured that the one we're staying in was just as good. We have spent most evenings listening to British families discussing how much property they own. Talking about the businesses they run. Hiring of architects for the building of their house. What prestigious University their son or daughter has got into. One morning a Mother was giving her son a little money for the morning - €100. I am surrounded by self entitled obnoxious people that probably made their money exploiting their employees. A lot of these families come to this hotel every year. The hotel is nowhere near as good as the one we like. Rooms are just ok and food isn't great. For people that have so much money they don't seem to know good food at all. It would put me right off coming here again in the winter because of these people. My husband is trying to convince me that not all skiers are like this and it is probably the type of resort we decided to stay in but I'm not sure.

Yeah, they don't sound pleasant but neither do you OP. Moaning about the food and hotel when most of us haven't made it out the country for 2 years.
Can't you just zone them out and enjoy the break? I'd adore to be enjoying snowy mountain scenery.

We were in a restaurant in a high-income-even -for-California town back in the summer (British but live in the US) and the people on the next table were talking about buying a car just to keep at their holiday home there because renting one is such a hassle for only 12 weeks a year.

I have never felt so poor and we absolutely are not poor! 🤦🏼‍♀️

It’s very expensive to go skiing only people I know who go skiing are quite well off

Definitely not jealous and as far as I am concerned myself and my husband have done relatively well for ourselves. I just don't feel like we need to let everyone in the hotel we're staying in know about it.

I am completely being judgemental because I just said I think they are self entitled and obnoxious.

Oh fgs don't be so ridiculous, we've skied in Austria and just talk about normal stuff. Where are you? Lech or somewhere? Be careful which resort you go to, they obviously all attract different types of people.

Why are you spending your holiday eavesdropping on other people's conversations though?

Unless these are people you came with, can't you just talk to your DH and make your own conversation instead?

You could just put in some EarPods and read a book if you don't want to hear them, or go up to your room where it's quieter.

Communal areas in hotels are going to be full of people socialising, especially since many people get together for skiing and love the social side of it.

Doesn't sound like my recollections of St Anton or Mayrhofen. I'm guessing you are in Kitzbuhel as that has good winter hiking I believe.

Sounds like you haven't picked a great hotel and are now stuck with crass fellow guests. Not all skiers are like that but, if you do like that type, definitely don't go to the big Swiss resorts like Verbier.

I know what youre saying op. There is this sort of loud gloating and showing off. Just obssessed with money and status. People on here admit to putting new acquaintances addresses into rightmove to check their house price, mention the brand of something before they mention what it is. It isn't about getting stuck in and enjoying life and good fortune or glamour even, just a relentless check box pursuit of shit that has status in their little group and the smug gloating and guffawing. Yuck.
It's not all skiers btw. But they are attracted to the status of skiing even if theyre shit at it. And can be found in certain resorts.

Exactly this. Sounds like they are just talking about their lives and because those lives are different to yours, you are bitching about it here. And a parent gave her child some money, which for some reason you have decided is too much. You sound most unpleasant.

Weve been on ski holidays in Austria, Italy and Andorra and never met people like that. But then, we travel with Crystal rather than one of the more exclusive firms...
