Are a lot of skiers like this?

We decided to go to Austria for Christmas. We wanted to do lots of hiking and have good food in the evenings. We have gone to this particular resort in Austria for summer holidays but have never gone in the winter. We couldn't manage to get the hotel we liked but were assured that the one we're staying in was just as good. We have spent most evenings listening to British families discussing how much property they own. Talking about the businesses they run. Hiring of architects for the building of their house. What prestigious University their son or daughter has got into. One morning a Mother was giving her son a little money for the morning - €100. I am surrounded by self entitled obnoxious people that probably made their money exploiting their employees. A lot of these families come to this hotel every year. The hotel is nowhere near as good as the one we like. Rooms are just ok and food isn't great. For people that have so much money they don't seem to know good food at all. It would put me right off coming here again in the winter because of these people. My husband is trying to convince me that not all skiers are like this and it is probably the type of resort we decided to stay in but I'm not sure.

I can explain what I consider exploitation of employees in England considering I worked there long enough to experience it if you would like? I left many years ago and have never experienced it as bad as I did in England. My niece worked there a number of years and left about 6 months ago and the stories she shared were appalling also. She absolutely loves where she works now and is treated very well by her employers.
Owning a business and paying people does not automatically make you exploit employees. What you pay them and the hours you expect them to work would allow me to know if you exploit your employees. Also how much leave you actually allow them to take would also be interesting. It was interesting to see those same employers take lots of nice expensive holidays while they would question one day's annual leave with us employees.

We hired an architect and engineer and built our own house and it was a headache from start to finish. Discussing the build while I was on holiday was the last thing I wanted to do.

We both work hard and while on holiday can think of nothing less we want to talk about.

Yes that lady was very vocal about how much she was giving her child and that's why we all heard.

I imagine the OP to have literally turned herself inside out with disapproval and all that's left for the other guests to see is a floating cat's bum mouth.

I live there.

We went skiied this morning. Our discussion was about who’s turn it was to change toddlers butt and chatting with friends about general stuff

Our car is a 16 year old rust bucket.
I don’t think many English people ski around here.

Skiers can be twats. It's a twatty sport.

Come to northern BC to ski! Find the smaller resorts. You will find average families, we sit around communal tables and a lot of us bring out own packed lunch. No bragging about what we have, we talk about the snow, the runs, the cold wind on the lifts!

How did you know? Are you in the same hotel as me?

I think 100problems just demonstrated that.

An interesting thought but the three regular skiers I know really don't support your theory:

  • my sister and her family. Teachers, wouldn't dream of talking to anyone about money.
  • A single man in his 50s. I have a riguh idea of what he earns because I know what he does and he's very generous when buying drinks etc, but you'd never know he had any money to look at him and he drives a very modest car
  • A middle aged married couple. He runs his own business doing something really very impressive, I love hearing about his work and I know from the kind of clients he has he must be doing well. They have a big house and an expensive car but if you meet them in holiday you wouldn't know that. He's he most generous person I know, both in terms of money and his conversation. He's very clever but he can talk to anyone at their level e.g he will talk to DS1 with genuine interest about his job at McDonalds. He definitely wouldn't be snooty about someone for liking the wrong food!

Not at all - you probably got the ones who could afford a very expensive Xmas ski holiday.

Skiing can be very expensive and does attract the elite club, along with a wide set who genuinely just enjoy mountain air and the sport itself.

@MrsTerryPratchett

Skiers are all fuckers. Hikers on the other hand... glowing bastions of virtue.
