Programming the TV to record on VHS..

Ipods..

Renting a dvd from the shop..

Decorating a room and having one colour at the bottom with a paler version at the top separated with a pretty boarder..

What are yours?

I miss my iPod too.

Encyclopaedias are more reliable than information on the internet. The articles are by authoritative authors, and have been peer reviewed and edited

Britannica is online, and I often find it better for introducing topics than Wikipedia now. Wikipedia was taken over by a load of wannabe academics, desperate to prove its reliability, and is covered with detail, arguments and sources. Britannica is written by people who know how to write an introduction. Just saying.

Hard copy encyclopaedias outdated very quickly and take up a lot of space.

There is a vast amount of current and high quality information on the net but you do need to know how to discern between reputable and hogwash which is something that surprisingly few people seem able to do.

Thankfully research skills are now being taught in schools.

CD’s and DVD’s I spent a small fortune on these things in the 90’s and now they all sit boxed up in the garage because I’d get about 20p each for them on a selling site but can’t bring myself to do it because I spent so much 😩🙈

I work in a school. Unfortunately, the term gay is still by far the most prevalent derogatory term to describe something or someone of less value.

HellieOldie · 24/12/2021 19:53

Bic 4 colour are very popular at DS secondary school. It seems your social standing increases by the number of different coloured barrels you possess

Strangeways19 · 24/12/2021 19:56

Going to the video (later DVD) shop to rent a film

@elQuintoConyo

Sending texts, actual SMS texts, not WhatsApps, and having to count the characters so you didn't accidentally write two messages and be charged twice.

Pagers - an 18yo student of mine recently asked me what one was, as he'd seen it in an "old" film.

Landline. Haven't had one for around 9 years.

MP3 player - I really miss mine.

Foil Christmas decorations you hung from the ceiling.

One fat BIC biro with four different colours - I haven't seen one in years!

My kids use those biros, I always buy them for school.

Yes sadly this is true on my school too.

@RoyalFamilyFan

I can remember reading about drive-thrus in America. We were boggled by the laziness of Americans that they didn't even get out of their car to buy food. Now I love a drive-thru.
My parents were horrified by the idea of them. I also love them!!
Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 24/12/2021 20:14

I remember my mum and dads tv that had buttons on the side for changing the channel that you push in. They had a land line phone with a proper turn dial in their hallway. Lights on the Christmas tree as big as confers. Woodchip wall paper. Ah I’m starting to feel old!

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 24/12/2021 20:14

Confers - I meant conkers!

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 24/12/2021 20:16

Oh and the introduction of mobile phones. I first saw a friend with one at a night out line dancing ( 😂 ) and it was as big as a brick and was in a leopard print case!

You've got a point about wood chip wall paper. Glad to see the back if that!!

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

4 in 1 box pens are very in demand in secondary schools.

Faxes. Does anyone have a fax machine anymore?

You have to use a fax if you need to send something to the DWP and want it get there faster than Royal Mail. Emails aren't secure.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/12/2021 21:00

I remember straighteners appearing.

I used to teach Textiles about 18 or so years ago, l managed to just stop an Afro Carrabeam girl trying to iron her hair straight on the ironing board with the ironShock

Straighteners appeared a bit after l think!

Ha ha, they may be perhaps but what the kids are learning is copy and paste off the internet. They don’t even read what they’re copying half the time. Honestly, todays kids are not the knowledgeable wonders they’re sometimes made out to be, certainly not all of them. They can be cynical I grant you, but it’s mostly about school, learning and the value of work now, which is fair enough.

ParsleySageRosemary · 24/12/2021 21:15

Alternatively, the other option is what you see in universities, where students are encouraged to back every little they say by reams of quotations rather than commit the crime of having original thoughts, because naturally their status is so low their own thoughts - or the ability to formulate them - does not matter.

Like everything in Britain it’s one extreme or the other.

ParsleySageRosemary · 24/12/2021 21:32

There’s another thing I would consider to be antiquated: the ability to think and to observe beyond tick boxes.

thegcatsmother · 24/12/2021 21:41

I must be a fossil then. I use cash; chip and pin; I buy CDs and DVDs. I do not have a smartphone. I buy and read books. I have a landline. My life runs smoothly.

ilovepixie · 24/12/2021 21:44

I still have to use cash as a lot of places where I live (Northern Ireland) don't take cards.

Kajlo · 24/12/2021 21:46

Recording music off the radio onto mixed tapes. Floppy disks. Pagers. Internet chat rooms. MSN.

Mummadeze · 24/12/2021 21:48

Yellow pages and A to Z’s

OldPunk · 24/12/2021 21:51

Dial a disc to see which record was playing that week and having to beg my Mother to let me ring because of the cost!

twinmum2007 · 24/12/2021 21:56

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Having to go and collect a takeaway
We're in a town & still go & collect ours after ringing up for it. We get a 20% discount for collecting so it's worth it.

Dial a disc must have been free at some times or we'd never have been allowed to ring it, ,my parenst were very strict about using the phone but I remember ringing dial a disc loads with no charge. Maybe it was at certain times of day only
