Do I need antibiotics? (bastard cat)

StillMedusa · 23/12/2021 20:31

I have an adopted stray (he was a poor skeletal thing for years til I finally managed to capture him, get him chip checked, patched up etc)
Now a fat glossy neutered boy. Very affectionate..but he bites. He bites me at least once a week without warning, just because he CAN.

Generally I give it a wash, antiseptic cream and all good, but yesterday he bit me quite hard, drew blood and though I cleaned it, tonight it is a bit tender, hotter than it should be and I'm wondering if I do actually need antibiotics. My arm aches but I might be imagining that!
Not a great pic.. it's angrier in real life..but do I need to try and get hold of the GP tomorrow?! You can probably see the two fang holes!!!

GP here - yes you do!

pixiegumboot · 23/12/2021 20:34

That looks like it needs antibiotics sooner rather than later.

LunaTheCat · 23/12/2021 20:34

Oops and aren’t you lovely to take care and nourish your cat. Merry Christmas.

Quickest thread ever (as quick as the cat's teeth)😂

DH got bitten by neighbour’s cat recently, he went to a&e next day (it was a Sunday so no GP option) - nurse said he did the right thing as needed a tetanus booster and antibiotics. She said cat bites are especially nasty. Good luck!

ThesecondLEM · 23/12/2021 20:35

Yes, cat bite/scratch fever can be dangerous. If I had a bite like that at work (vet nurse), I'd be packed off to minor injuries.

unfar · 23/12/2021 20:36

Yes definitely. If you ring 111 they can normally send antibiotics to a nearby pharmacy- some are open quite late.

growyourown77 · 23/12/2021 20:36

Similar thing happened to my mum, 111 said cat bites notorious for infection and needing antibiotics. Get asap before Xmas day and should sort itself out....

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 23/12/2021 20:37

Yes! Cat teeth are very sharp and can reach your bone. I would get antibiotics ASAP

EerieSilence · 23/12/2021 20:37

Yep, tetanus jab and antibiotics pronto. They're awful bastards.

Onthedunes · 23/12/2021 20:37

That's your Christmas present from him.

Get some antibiotics before Christmas.

StillMedusa · 23/12/2021 20:46

Bugger! OK getting on the phone to 111 now..... (and failing that GP first thing tomorrow)
Thanks all.
I should stuff and cook him, the ungrateful fur lined shit! Grin

Yes. I went to A & E and was kept in for 7 days.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 23/12/2021 20:59

Posted too soon, for 6 hourly intravenous antibiotics.

Spongeboob · 23/12/2021 21:08

Looking like that, absolutely. A friend of mine almost lost his hand to a severely infected cat bite. Not worth risking.

Iamkmackered1979 · 23/12/2021 21:32

My sister worked in a vets and was attacked by a cat at work and ended up quite poorly in hospital, worse case scenario obviously but get it checked out and hope you’re ok
I have 4 cats but only got clawed by one by accident and it’s flipping sore. Thankfully all was well, my sister has had sepsis twice so worth getting checked. Take care op

Crunchymum · 23/12/2021 21:41

I got in the middle of my cat and the neighbours cat squaring up. Ended up on x10 day antibiotics (x2 different ones) and a tetanus booster....except the surgery didn't have any in stock and I had to find a travel clinic who could see me same day. Cost me £30 and half a days annual leave Shock

StillMedusa · 23/12/2021 22:33

Well I can't fault 111... they made me an immediate appointment at our local minor injuries (thankfully open til 10.30) ..I went down and have come away with a box of antibiotics to take. They did offer me a tetanus booster too but I declined as I think I had one less than 10 years ago, so I'll take my chances.

I'm still contemplating how to cook a cat for Xmas.... (not really I'm quite fond of him!)

Please can we have a photo of the little shitbag? I want to see him

Ponkle · 23/12/2021 23:01

Glad you got sorted, the infection from a cat bite can spread surprisingly quickly as I found out! Our little furball bit me on the wrist and hit a vein 😳 I'd advise painkillers as the puncture wounds were quite painful for a few days. Good luck!

cheeseislife8 · 23/12/2021 23:05

Vet nurse here, those can be nasty! A colleague ended up having surgery because she left it.
Glad you got seen straight away. Don't be too hard on the little fella Grin

StillMedusa · 24/12/2021 00:16

ChockySprinkles
Looks innocent doesn't he? He invites tummy tickles...at your peril!
He was a street cat for years... at least 4 nice neighbours were trying to feed him, but he was untouchable. Then he got really ill, and so I was able to capture him, took him to the vets and had him checked for a chip, patched up and neutered.
He still lived outside but started coming just inside the front door for food.
Then last January, he walked in... sat on the sofa and stayed!!!!
He's now fat, happy and glorious. He bullies my dog, gets my DS2 up at all hours to be fed, and is a picture of purry contentment.
But he does like to bite!

Buy him a muzzle for Christmas.

TimeIhadaSeasonalNameChange · 24/12/2021 08:01

I can't believe you're accusing that innocent creature of hurting you. Am sure butter wouldn't melt in his mouth! Grin

Glad you got treated so quickly. Hope you and your lord and master have a great Christmas!

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 24/12/2021 11:58

I'm aghast here at the apparently serious nature of cat bites.

I was thinking of getting a kitten?
Do people survive kitten bites and scratches?

Op that's v good service.
Any face pic of your little darling.
