Ham cooked in Cola

I am toying with the idea of cooking our Christmas ham in Coca Cola this year but I'm a bit hesitant. Is it nice?
I imagine it to be sticky and sweet, although that does sound good, I don't want to ruin the ham. I
Do anyone have experience of cooking ham in Cola ?

Yes. I will live and die by Nigellas Ham In Coke.
Not sweet, incredible and so easy.
You will not look back!

Justcallmebebes · 21/12/2021 15:46

It will change your world, honestly

TerribleCustomerCervix · 21/12/2021 15:47

How guys? In a pan on low heat?

Sounds unreal xxxx

Boxbox2 · 21/12/2021 15:50

I slow cooked mine then roasted for 45 mins (basted it twice during the oven time). Was great, tender with a lovely crunchy sticky glaze on top!

lonsdaleshorts · 21/12/2021 15:50

I do this recipe quite a lot. Full fat coke though. Don't do diet. I then make my own glaze with garlic, honey and mustard. Ham always tastes better in day 2.

PotteringAlong · 21/12/2021 15:50

Yes, it’s lovely.

Full fat, cheap Jack cola is your best bet.

Shade17 · 21/12/2021 15:51

I always do mine in Coke then into the oven studded with cloves and glazed with honey and mustard

Toastfiendish · 21/12/2021 15:51

I have just put this on to cook now! It's delicious. I use the bbc good food recipe but I don't think it's that different to Nigella's

SleighbellsZ · 21/12/2021 15:52

Full fat.

It's amazing! We do it every Christmas

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 21/12/2021 15:53

Yes, it’s a staple in this house. Cooking one on Friday!

1Wanda1 · 21/12/2021 15:59

It's amazing, not sickly sweet at all. Don't use the sugar free version - the whole point is the sugar.

I did this earlier this year and everyone said it was the best ham they'd ever had. Doing it again for Christmas.

Hopeislost · 21/12/2021 15:59

Yes it's really nice! Has to be full fat Coke though! I've also done it with ginger beer, Dr Pepper and Lilt, works well as long as it is the full sugar version.

ohidoliketobe · 21/12/2021 16:00

Ohhhh yes it's incredible. Tried a few and they're all pretty much similar, doing Nigellas version this year with treacle and cloves. www.nigella.com/recipes/ham-in-coca-cola
I'll put the ham into water to soak on Thursday morning (draws out excess salt), change the water a few times and cook it on Christmas eve.

Already been said but it absolutely must be FULL FAT coke, it needs the sugars

ButterflyBitch · 21/12/2021 16:04

Do it 👏🏼

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/12/2021 16:08

I've do a ham in cola for Christmas Eve dinner ever since How to Eat was released, it's amazing. I'll probably pressure cook it again this year (if it fits in the pot 🤣) and then glaze it in a hot oven afterwards

Shelleymoon · 21/12/2021 16:09

Thanks all. I'm going to do it!
Sure it will be delicious.
Yes Queenie6655, long and slow in a pan.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 21/12/2021 16:39

Be very careful not to let it boil over. I wasn't and my hob has been permanently ruined. The ham did taste good though.

DinosApple · 21/12/2021 17:59

Easy and delicious! Go for it OP!

Mykittensmittens · 21/12/2021 18:01

Lots of regular colas still have all of most of the sugar removed. You need to use real, original coke which costs a lot more but you need the sugar to create the lovely coating. You can also do this in the slow cooker too - then blast in the oven for the last 15 mins. Produces an exceptionally tender gammon.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 21/12/2021 18:03

I’ve done it several times. It works with Cherry Coke too 👍

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/12/2021 18:04

It really is amazing. Have to do it now every year.

myrtleWilson · 21/12/2021 18:24

Full fat coke is a must. I don't tend to do the glazing to be honest as I usually cook it as a family meal...It does go a long way - without sounding like the proverbial MN chicken

I made it just the other day - we had ham, celeriac bake and red cabbage for 2 people as one meal, ham, egg and chips for 2 as another, made some savoury ham and cheese muffins (about 12) and also had (and so) recommend using leftovers for her pasta dish for 4 people

(plus there is another stash of ham cubes in the freezer)

AnneShirleysNewDress · 21/12/2021 18:25

I do this one www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/cola-ham-maple-mustard-glaze

nocoolnamesleft · 21/12/2021 18:27

It has become our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. Gorgeous.
