REIKI. Is it a load of bollocks

It sounds it. But I’m a sucker for all that.

Had it once, wonderful experience.

explodingeyes · 18/12/2021 23:54

I would love to give it a go as a treatment. If anyone has a recommendation in south Manchester let me know. My science head says it's bollox but my other side has read lots of stuff about it working

SammyScrounge · 19/12/2021 00:13

@LadyCampanulaTottington

It’s several thousands of years old and if you believe it, it can work.
It can indeed. I sprained my ankle and two months later it was still swollen and developing fresh bruises every few days. I joined some friends in a cafe one morning and there was a new woman with them - a Reiki practitioner.I'm sure you've guessed what's coming. I took some persuading but in the end she ran her hands over the ankle. She didn't touch at first just moved her hands above the foot. It was strange - I felt a warmth in the ankle and it gradually spread up to my chest. It was actually pleasant. later I walked home with my friend. I wasn't limping. At home I took my trousers off and the swelling was gone. And kit stayed gone.

I hate having reiki but I really do believe it works. I have experienced the most weird sensations when having it and when someone has attempted to perform reiki in me as part of a separate treatment I can always tell and have to ask them to stop (this is when they haven’t told me this is what they are doing).

Blueberry40 · 19/12/2021 00:41

I studied it as part of a course in holistic therapies when I was a teenager. I can say with confidence that it is 100% bollocks!

Buytoomuchonebay · 19/12/2021 00:48

I pulled my back out once-and broke my ankle at the same time
I know a lady who does it and she asked if she could do it on me
She waved her hands about over the affected areas and told me I’d feel better soon
Days later,I still had a broken ankle and a bad back
It made zero difference

She did do it on a dog she was sitting for and he just kept looking at her like she was bonkers
He did seem a bit calmer after though

Omicrone · 19/12/2021 00:51

Of course the 'energy' part of it is a load of bollocks, but the mind is a powerful thing and the placebo effect can be very effective. In the same way that your heart beats faster or you get the shits when you are nervous, the mind can have a direct effect on the physical. As someone else said, the fact that someone is giving you a relaxing experience and giving you caring personal attention, that can have a powerful effect.

They do it in cancer units when patients go for chemo, so it obviously isn't completely ridiculous.

That's your answer then. You weren't taught properly.
Skinnytailedsquirrel · 19/12/2021 01:04

I haven't "used" it for some years but have had good experiences when I did.

Worked wonders for me during grieving. After that I became interested and took several sessions for myself.

It works.

DemBonesDemBones · 19/12/2021 01:17

Yes.

Uninterested · 19/12/2021 01:37

@LookslovelyinSpringtime

I am curious to know if all those saying yes have ever experienced it? I am a practitioner and it certainly isn’t bollocks. My guess is that people are just deciding it’s bollocks whilst having no experience or understanding of it.

I’ve seen this kind of response to so many questions of this sort and it makes me very sad.

I don’t need to experience to know that it’s definitely 100% bollux. Having a relaxing lie down and having someone pay attention to you can feel nice but that doesn’t mean that it’s works.

I think it’s disgusting that people claim to be able to heal other people with it. I actually find it a bit sinister and creepy. Still it’s an easy way to fleece people out of their hard earned cash.

KloppsTeeth · 19/12/2021 01:58

A periodic table of irrational nonsense here confirms it to be bollocks

comfortablyfrumpy · 19/12/2021 10:35

Going against the grain, I have had it several times and found it very beneficial. Maybe it's placebo, who knows - but the first time I had it I wasn't expecting it to work.

Elieza · 19/12/2021 11:14

@LookslovelyinSpringtime
Totally agree with you. It worked on me. Its a shame that some people have been fleeced by charlatans or have made an opinion on it without any experience of it (or expected one session to fix something major that clearly it cant and then wrote it off).

My rationale is that I don’t understand quantum physics but apparently it’s real as scientists tell us that. (Although how you can be in two places at once sounds like woo to me)!

I don’t understand reiki either but It’s been around for millennia. If it were shite it would have presumably have died out. So when people told me it was real I was prepared to try it, and it worked for me.

I believe in “There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio, / Than are dreamt of in your philosophy”

My mind is too small to understand much science but I am open minded enough to believe in reiki through my personal experience.

Love this!

I see that Reiki is assigned to the 'quack' block. Very fitting.

RockinHorseShit · 19/12/2021 11:40

No,

I thought it was too though, until I tried it with a reputable therapist as part of a long weekend spa type break. It was the weirdest shit. At one point I felt my whole body vibrating, so opened my eyes & looked up... to see the therapist standing up against a wall in some sort of meditation

After several more helpful treatments, I trained in it. That in itself was very freaky & convince me even more so that it works

I’ll make sure I won’t walk where you’ve been talking then.

TallulahsCurse · 19/12/2021 11:44

Of course it's absolute bollocks

BurbageBrook · 19/12/2021 11:48

Why would moving your hands around over someone without even touching them make any impact whatsoever? Of course it’s utter nonsense.

Waftypants · 19/12/2021 11:51

The strength of opinion of the naysayers on here is very interesting. Why so sure? Do you realise your can't see or feel Wi-Fi? but that definitely works most of the time. You can't see gravity or sound waves either.
Quantum physics is definitely mind blowing, everything is made of energy . So why is everyone so sure that energy fields are nonsense?

HermioneWeasley · 19/12/2021 12:07

Scientists know and understand how WiFi and gravity work, and how quantum physics works (I don’t claim to). Reiki doesn’t fit in with any current scientific knowledge,

If the evidence changes, I’ll change my view. There is nothing about reiki that can’t be explained by known psychological phenomena such as placebo effect.

Yes I have received it - more than once from a number of different experienced practitioners too.

I guess it made them feel good thinking they were doing something useful. It certainly did nothing for me.

Complete bollocks

Elphame · 19/12/2021 12:14

No it really hasn't! Even a cursory google search will tell you that Reiki is barely 100 years old.

PeriodHacker · 19/12/2021 12:17

I'm one of the biggest sceptics when it comes to anything like this BUT as a few others have said I definitely felt heat radiating from hands! It was a bit unsettling.
