Oh crap I'm crying already! Love actually

I have so much to do today and I am sitting with the Roses by the Christmas tree watching Love Actually.

I haven't watched in a few years. Was fully expecting to cry at Emma Thompson (she is amazing) but I'm actually crying at the bloody wedding at the beginning!

Anyone else love it even though they shouldn't?!

Loooove it.
It’s Liam Neeson’s wife’s funeral that always makes me cry.

Christmasisallaround · 18/12/2021 11:03

Yes that was sad too. Especially as he has lost his wife. And then Alan Rickman.

Thankfully there are laughs too!

Have you watched the dvd outtakes ? There are some whole other stories that were completely cut.

The Jamie/Aurelia story is my favourite, but I am an old softy.

And having just weathered 11 years of nativites as a parent, I will forever relate to ET’s surprise and enthusiasm for “a lobster, first lobster!”

Christmasisallaround · 18/12/2021 11:21

Must see if I can find the outtakes online thanks.

I think I like the silliness of Hugh Grant's role.

Hugh Grant is a far less silly PM than the one we’ve got!

Sideorderofchips · 18/12/2021 11:30

I always get tearful at the airport scene at the beginning and Emma thompsons scene

Emma Thompson's scene is almost unbearable.

Such a shit film, really, really, shit, but I watch it every year and cry buckets. What's going on with that?

Also 'There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?'

Duh!

My absolute favourite film. I know it’s not highbrow at all but I just love it. My most favourite gift was tickets to watch the movie accompanied by a live orchestra. So amazing.

I don’t think I can watch it this year. Another Christmas not seeing family as we’ve all got covid, will likely push me over the edge!

Covidclaire · 18/12/2021 12:19

I kept giggling to myself thinking about this during DC1 nativity!

GoGoGretaDoll · 18/12/2021 12:23

Emma Thompson is just sublime in every scene, isn't she?

See also her dancing at the Adele Audience With, if you haven't already. Legend.

FionnulaTheCooler · 18/12/2021 12:31

I love Love Actually. I get so annoyed at the American woman with the mentally ill brother throwing away her own chance at happiness though. Also, given that he seems to be living in a hospital wouldn't the medical staff prevent him from harassing his sister with constant phone calls and basically ruling her whole life?

BorisTheBellendPM · 18/12/2021 12:31

I've never seen it. Keep saying oh I must watch that this year but so far nope.

Maybe tonight with some wine?

Pegasussnail · 18/12/2021 12:33

The scene with Rowan
GrinGrinGrin

The bar scene.. we can't afford pyjamas

Emma is amazing in it. The little boy is a fantastic actor also.

Actually @Pegasussnail I think that's the problem with the film, it's a series of really great scenes all stitched together (albeit with some super dodgy ones flung in there too). If it was about fewer people in more depth, it would prolly be a better film.

And now I'm dunking on a Love Actually thread, what in god's name is wrong with me? As you were! Both Sides Now - go.

Deadringer · 18/12/2021 12:49

Laura Linneys story annoys me too, but i suppose her brother represents a situation, any situation that a person might have that prevents them from finding love. It could be shyness, insecurity about looks, or indeed a relative that they feel they need to put first. Agree the Emma T is fab.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/12/2021 12:50

There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?

That’s the quote I was trying to remember earlier.

The fact that so many people can remember a 20 year old film by particular scenes just goes to show how good it is surely? Complete schmaltzy pap, but good schmaltzy pap.

@Pegasussnail, did you see him all grown up in “Quern’s Gambit”?

Jenster03 · 18/12/2021 12:53

I absolutely love Emma Thompson. She's so good in every film she's been in.
She was also great in 'Last Christmas' I think it's called - the accent !!
The midwife on Bridget Jones...
Cruella...

The list goes on.

secretrugbyfan · 18/12/2021 12:54

The score to LA (rather than the soundtrack) is beautiful, and very relaxing to listen to.....Glasgow Love Theme is stunning!!!

Pegasussnail · 18/12/2021 13:00

I loved the Queens Gambit. Amazing
Didn't spot him... off to Google!!

TheTrinity · 18/12/2021 13:02

Just watched it the other night - it's Emma Thompson after opening up her xmas present - I cried with her!

Christmasisallaround · 18/12/2021 13:14

Just finished it. Love it just as much as ever. More so. I found myself less picky about imperfections. I think less sneery/cynical as I age.
Sorry to @Covidclaire terrible timing
