I'm desperately trying to stay awake but I keep nodding off and falling off my chair!
Ds has fallen asleep and is peaceful after being in terrible pain prior to coming to a&e.
He has suspected appendicitis Sad

Hi OP.
Now the hospital is awake for the day things will hopefully move quickly. Hope you get a comfier chair soon.

sazzy5 · 18/12/2021 08:34

I had appendicitis this year, mine burst so caused a lot of mess. I was up walking around the next day and spent a couple of nights in hospital. I was back running after about a week, but don’t tell the consultant that’s hope your son is ok, it is horrible and such a relief when it’s taken out.

Fredstheteds · 18/12/2021 08:36

During teacher training I was in agony - GP, given anti boitics etc. Went for a laparoscope 10 years later only to be told you had a appendicitis- you fought the infection and it shed. Easy op, key hole and relief from pain. Poor you- fellow teacher now SAHM but feel for you

Benjispruce5 · 18/12/2021 08:41

Op a friend’s DS had the same this week.He was put 2 days later.
MyDC had this aged 5. Quick recovery and never a problem since. If he has the op , by Christmas all will be well. Thinking of you as I’m in education and I was ready to drop yesterday.Flowers

Benjispruce5 · 18/12/2021 08:41

Out not put .

Tulipomania · 18/12/2021 08:43

Hi OP

DS went through this this week (appendectomy), although without me to keep him company as he's a bit older (22) & doesn't live at home. He's making a v quick recovery.

He arrived at A&E at about 8.30 am Tuesday and was eventually operated on at 9 pm. After having had blood tests, PCR test, scan and morphine for the pain which perked him up no end!

Keyhole surgery.

He was very lucky & was put in a private room because the wards were full.

We picked him up from hospital at 4 pm the next day - Wednesday - and brought him home. 2.5 hour drive.

He came home with painkillers and laxatives!
He rested the day after he got back, and then went back to work (wfh) yesterday! He is still in a slight amount of pain but generally OK.
Advice is to take it easy after 2 weeks, then he should be back to normal.

Hope your DS has a similarly straightforward experience.

I got lots of support on here.

Tulipomania · 18/12/2021 08:49

To add to reassure you OP, DS was playing Xbox with his brother the same day he got back from hospital!
If it's a keyhole appendectomy it really is quite straightforward.

here's a link to my thread in case it's helpful:

Hi OP

Glad you are on a ward.

Ask for some glycerin sticks or swabs so DS can keep his lips hydrated if he is still NBM.

They sometimes treat appendicitis with antibiotics but if they do operate these days it is keyhole.

I had mine out at 10 or 11 which wasn't keyhole so I got 6 weeks off school - yeah

I have to say your DS had done an excellent job with timing his op, although I bet he doesn't see it like that.

Letsnotargue · 18/12/2021 09:00

I had appendicitis - I thought my symptoms were quite clear but my blood tests didn’t show what the doctors expected so there was a bit of uncertainty and they said they still didn’t know what to expect when they operated. The hospital was rammed and I was nil by mouth from the Tuesday morning when admitted to the Thursday lunchtime when they operated, so it was a bit unnerving waiting to see what they would find. I’m only saying this because it can look like it’s something more sinister when in fact it’s still just the appendix.

I hope your son is seen soon and you have a nice hot cup of tea a land a pillow.

Benjispruce5 · 18/12/2021 09:03

Yea DC’s blood test was all clear but it was still appendicitis and had just perforated when they operated. I don’t know why they bother with the blood test.

skippy67 · 18/12/2021 09:04

My DD was admitted to hospital with appendicitis when she was only 3, a few weeks before Christmas a few years ago. She was in for about a week, while they treated the inflammation, then we had to go back in the New Year for them to remove it in case it happened again. Keyhole surgery and she was home a few days later, once she'd done a poo! Hope your DS recovers soon OP.

Sirzy · 18/12/2021 09:07

Hope you manage to get some rest. Glad they are letting you stay with him.

GuybrushT · 18/12/2021 09:31

Been through similar with my Ds earlier in the year. He was in for 4 days but they decided after lots of tests it wasn't appendicitis but abdominal migraines. It was horrible to see him in so much pain and discomfort but they were able to give him more painkillers and it passed eventually. Thinking of you and DS, fingers crossed you get some answers soon. And from one teacher to another who has also done that shift on the hospital chair after a week in the classroom, you have my every sympathy!

RandomMess · 18/12/2021 09:43

Hopefully they will make a decision ASAP and if it's surgery then he'll be one of the first down Thanks

Tiramesu · 18/12/2021 10:08

I had appendicitis. Mine had perforated and been leaking for a while before it got taken out. It's quite a simple procedure & it is uncomfortable afterwards (I found it excruciating to laugh i.e. have abdominal contractions for days) but it's fairly quick to recover

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 18/12/2021 14:35

@crosbystillsandmash how is your ds now?

crosbystillsandmash · 18/12/2021 14:46

We're still on the ward waiting for a scan ConfusedIt's been a while but they're clearly busy!
Ds has slept and watched a film and seems ok.
I'm being powered by caffeine and Mumsnet at the moment and trying not to think about the lovely things we had planned for the weekend!!!

QueenofLouisiana · 18/12/2021 15:03

DS had a burst appendix at 3, treated by antibiotics and didn’t require surgery. He was in hospital a bit longer as it had taken a while for appendicitis to be diagnosed (3 visits to a doctor in 3days). Still out after a week and absolutely fine.

KickAssAngel · 18/12/2021 15:24

I had an emergency appendectomy in the middle of the night, then went home the same day. I was teaching again 6 days later.

TerriblyNaice · 18/12/2021 17:14

How are things OP?

crosbystillsandmash · 18/12/2021 17:22

Not great, he's still not had his scan and he's plummeting because he's so hungry. Apparently he may not have it until tomorrow as they're so busy and he can't eat until he's had it!

I feel like I'm not doing enough to help him but the hospital staff are clearly struggling to tend to everyone!

OP posts:
crosbystillsandmash · 18/12/2021 17:24

He's trying to sleep but the man in the bed opposite is constantly FaceTiming people and has a very loud voice (as do the people on the other end!)
Please.Be.Quiet!!!

OP posts:
RandomMess · 18/12/2021 17:37

How long do they need him nil by mouth for? Presumably he could eat now if surgery isn't until tomorrow?

girlmom21 · 18/12/2021 17:42

Put some pressure on them to confirm when he's having the scan OP.

Is there a childrens ward?
