Anyone up? I'm at the hospital with teen ds

I'm desperately trying to stay awake but I keep nodding off and falling off my chair!
Ds has fallen asleep and is peaceful after being in terrible pain prior to coming to a&e.
He has suspected appendicitis Sad

I'm up randomly so have a coffee from me too- mine's decaf in case you can doze off. Hope he's soon better

crosbystillsandmash · 18/12/2021 05:57

I'm a bit worried about leaving the room as he's being moved to the ward at some point!
As soon as we're on the ward I'll be off searching for tea or coffee!

DH was in hospital a few weeks back and I remember the endless waiting about in uncomfortable chairs so you really do have my sympathies. The shift changeovers seems to be a trigger for things getting on the move. I hope you manage to get some answers soon and get a proper rest. It's really draining. Sympathies to the both of you.

Tillyvonpantsalo · 18/12/2021 06:04

Oh no, hope your ds is OK and you get a ward bed and a cup of tea soon.
It is scary in the night

Floppyflopflop · 18/12/2021 06:06

Sorry to hear this OP. I’m sure he will be totally fine. Recovery time is relatively quick, he will just need plenty of rest afterwards!
I had my appendix out whilst on holiday in France, when I was in my 20s. Don’t remember much about it, just the relief not to be in so much pain once I’d had surgery!!
I hope he’s better soon and you get some well deserved rest!!

lurker69 · 18/12/2021 06:42

My husband had his out, it was keyhole surgery, he was out of the hospital 5 or 6 hours later! hope your sons feeling better soon and you get some rest.

toomuchlaundry · 18/12/2021 06:51

I had appendectomy at 16 (many years ago!)

Apart from being a slightly dramatic teen about it, all was well. The doctor thought it was wind with me at first which I was totally affronted by and told him in no uncertain terms it was my appendix Blush. Then realised it meant an operation so tried to backtrack and say it was only wind after all and could I go home!

Hope you get some answers soon

girlmom21 · 18/12/2021 06:52

How is he OP?

toomuchlaundry · 18/12/2021 06:53

Didn’t do keyhole surgery in those days either, so I was in hospital for about 5 days, so good to see techniques have improved

mumonthehill · 18/12/2021 06:56

Oh dear you are me this time last year with teen ds. We were only in hospital 24 hours after the op so fingers crossed they do keyhole surgery and he is home quickly. Try and get a coffee and they should feed you on the ward, when we were in last year once you were on the ward you could not leave but people could drop stuff at the door. Good luck!

Babyiskickingmyribs · 18/12/2021 07:01

This is an op they do a lot. It’s a pretty common problem. Usually keyhole surgery now, with 3 incisions about 2cm long. One on each side and one in the bellybutton usually. Recovery takes maybe a week or two for the stitches to all heal completely and then you have to be careful about liftings heavy things for six weeks or so.

QOD · 18/12/2021 07:07

I had mine out when I was 7. Back in the days of matrons and 10am ward rounds
I was in for over a week!!
Admittedly it obvs wasn’t keyhole back then so had a hefty scar
Had to go to school there too 😂
All of us had lessons Surreal

theneverendinglaundry · 18/12/2021 07:11

I was in the same position as you a few months ago OP. My dCs bloods came back showing an infection, so after a PCR test they were moved to a ward and had surgery. They were sore but recovered in two weeks. Couldn't do keyhole - if your son has keyhole he will recover a lot quicker.

I know how you are feeling right now and how hard it is. It took me a while to get over the shock and stress of it all. Take care of yourself x

LefttoherownDevizes · 18/12/2021 07:11

If he gets moved to the children's ward (not sure what age they cut off) there should be a kitchen space with tea/coffee/bread/cereal and a fridge and microwave for you).

Hope you have a plan soon

gogohm · 18/12/2021 07:13

Sorry to hear this, hope you have moved to the ward.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 18/12/2021 07:19

Is there someone at home who could drop off a hoodie and some sandwiches and a thermos of tea?

Hope you get to the ward soon so you can both be more comfy.

He'll have to be tucked up on the sofa for Christmas. When I was small I once had surgery just before Christmas and it was a really good time to recover. Lots of good TV, everyone at home, no school to miss and everything lovely and cosy at home.

Daisydoor12 · 18/12/2021 07:31

Oh no that was me with my teen ds a couple years ago. Ironically he was the same age as me and same time of year when I had it. Totally out of the blue had been playing in a football match then sat doing homework. Couldn’t do keyhole but he was home the next day and back to school when term opened in January.
Hope all goes well and you get a comfy chair and a coffee soon.

comfortablyfrumpy · 18/12/2021 07:38

I hope your son is OK.
I remember my brother having his appendix out just before Christmas. He would have been about 17.

My mum had been a nurse and midwife and tended to be quite dismissive of us being ill, but I think eventually she realised it wasn't trapped wind or whatever and he did get to A and E...

It worked quite well in terms of recovery for him as he was off school anyway for Christmas hols and he got properly spoiled. I do remember visiting him in hospital. For some reason he had been put on a geriatric ward (must have been lack of beds) which tickled him no end.

I hope your son is now on a ward and you have been able to get some shut eye without falling off the chair x

mommybear1 · 18/12/2021 07:40

Hope you and DS are doing ok OP and you have managed to track down some tea/coffee! ☕️

crosbystillsandmash · 18/12/2021 07:41

Thanks so much everyone!
We're on the ward now, he's on an adult ward but I'm allowed to stay with him because of his age. Feel a bit sorry of the other men who have now got a woman in the room Confused
It's looking like appendicitis but I'm tired and worried and am trying hard not to convince myself it's not something more awful!!

Nothing useful to add, but hopefully you get out soon, you get some sleep and your DS makes a speedy recovery.

In a slight derail - Thank you (and all the other teachers reading this) for helping keep our kids in education through all this shite. Your efforts are hugely appreciated in this kitchen.

bouncydog · 18/12/2021 07:49

I went to GP’s surgery and was sent to hospital for mine to be removed asap. I was home the following day. Had pain in shoulder for a few days from the gas they inflate your abdomen with but other than that right as rain within a few days. I was up and walking around within a few hours of the op. I’m sure your son will be fine.

MrsDThomas · 18/12/2021 08:02

Oh how awful. He’s in the best place. If its appendicitis he’ll be in theatre before you know it and you’ll both be home soon.

I feel Its always worse when its dark outside. Once the light lifts thing seem better especially when you can speak to a loved one.
