Whatever happened to the Boris mania and how do the Tories turn this around?

They say a week is a long time in politics but a few months certainly is.

Remember in May when the Tories romped the local elections. Boris was loved (by leavers anyway) for getting Brexit done and the Tories had the vaccine bounce. Then came freedom day in the summer. They were flying in the polls and even took Hartlepool off Labour in a by-election. There was no end to their election winning machine and it was even called the year of the Tory.

Since then though two unthinkable by-election defeats to the Lib Dems, Labour have a poll lead as well and Boris is really unpopular all of a sudden.

How do the Tories turn this around?

By not being corrupt, lying, self serving arseholes?

2oldfordrama · 17/12/2021 19:58

I bloody hope they don’t turn it around. People need to recognise they are and always have been corrupt liars who are more interested in their own careers, getting rich and making their mates rich too than creating an honest, efficient and supportive society

Indecisivelurcher · 17/12/2021 20:03

Hopefully they won't.

They don't. At least I hope they don't. Lying twunts.

Do people not think they'll win the next election then?

A new leader bounce likely if they dump Boris.

I don't think it was ever Boris mania more corybn utter dread and fear!
For all.. His many failing and faults... At least Boris seems relatively normal. Unlike extreme, snake like lying sneeky corybn who I might add... Had an extra person at his covid dinner, shock horror...

It's all a load of nonsense.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 20:28

When is the next election?
Why is it such a worry, surley we need a teeny bit of stability right now?
I'm very happy to have some change but not right now.

Forion · 17/12/2021 20:32

They're all disgusting and I can't wait to see the back of them. They despise ordinary people and would happily let us die in the gutter. I know a tory MP who's a staunch Christian and she still voted against free school meals during the lockdown. They're all despicable.

Frazzled2207 · 17/12/2021 20:35

Hopefully they won’t

This.

However most people don't actually like change. The alternatives are a bit wet. I wouldn't be surprised if they still win with a reduced majority.

If we enter a major recession however people will vote. It's always about money.

thirddayout · 17/12/2021 20:38

Get rid of Mr Johnson. Replace with a full time leader with some personal morals.

Forion · 17/12/2021 20:45

Get rid of politicians who despise the people of this country.

Get rid of the likes of Eton where they're all taught their dubious morals then packed off to Oxford where they get to indulge their dubious morals and hatred for anyone not like them even further.

Politicians should reflect the society they serve.

Hollyhead · 17/12/2021 20:50

They probably can turn it around (not that I want them to) by getting rid of Boris and replacing him with an intelligent person with gravitas who’s untarnished with being in his government.

Poetrypatty · 17/12/2021 20:52

A lot of it was about people couldn't stand Corbyn, who is now long gone. Also Boris Johnson puts on a front but can't keep it up forever. That's why the people in London, who'd seen him as Mayor, didn't vote for him in the General Election.

Which one of the current Tory party would lead to this bounce? I can’t think of one who isn’t either hated (JRM) or ridiculed (Raab, Williamson, Truss, Gove) Who are they going to find who isn’t a corrupt liar?

I'm talking only this year though. They won Hartlepool, stormed the local elections and were flying in the polls while Starmer's Labour were floundering.

Probably Sunak.

Have to agree about Labour losing in 2019 as much as the Tories winning.

Rishi Sunak would lead to a bounce, even though he is the worst Tory Chancellor since Norman Lamont.

LizzieSiddal · 17/12/2021 21:17

I used to think Sunack would win an election if Johnson went but he’s now missing in a crib whilst businesses are closing. The whole lot of them need to go!

One of the problems is an uneasy alliance. Red wall northern towns (socially conservative but economically disadvantaged and working class, voted Brexit); more socially liberal seats around the M25 but middle class and more prosperous; and the shire seats.

They gained Hartlepool this year (the red wall northern town), lost Amersham (middle class, remain area just outside the M25) and not lost a core Tory shire seat.
