Whatever happened to the Boris mania and how do the Tories turn this around?

They say a week is a long time in politics but a few months certainly is.

Remember in May when the Tories romped the local elections. Boris was loved (by leavers anyway) for getting Brexit done and the Tories had the vaccine bounce. Then came freedom day in the summer. They were flying in the polls and even took Hartlepool off Labour in a by-election. There was no end to their election winning machine and it was even called the year of the Tory.

Since then though two unthinkable by-election defeats to the Lib Dems, Labour have a poll lead as well and Boris is really unpopular all of a sudden.

How do the Tories turn this around?

I think people are also fed up with him dressing up in hi-vis gear all the time and nonsense like that. I doubt that appeals to many and not his Tory heartlands especially.

nancy75 · 17/12/2021 22:14

The dressing up & the Peppa Pig speech certainly haven’t done him any favours but their downfall will be what it always is - their corruption, lies & the attitude that rules don’t apply to them

In answer to your two questions, firstly what happened to Boris is that even the most gullible and naive voters have finally started to figure out that Boris is an out of his depth serial liar and that maybe Brexit wasn't such a good idea after all.

How do the Tories turn it around. Well Boris gets deposed and replaced with someone more professional credible and doesn't include car noises in political speeches - this most likely means Sunak.

Sunak then promises that things will be different going forward (note: they won't) and that the gullible and the above naive voters fall for this long enough to secure another Tory victory at the next election. Shortly after which the gullible and naive voters realise they've been conned for a second time.

Unlike extreme, snake like lying sneeky corybn who I might add... Had an extra person at his covid dinner, shock horror...

I didn't know that Corbyn had been PM and had been responsible for breaking the Laws that he had made.Grin

They didn't actually do quite as well in the May elections as the Press would have you believe. E.g. They lost control of Oxfordshire with the Tory leader of the council losing his seat. Surrey lost a substantial number of Tory councillors even though the Tories retained overall control. Cambridge ended up electing a non Tory mayor, I can't remember from which party. So of course Priti Patel wants to change mayoral elections to being FPTP again to stop this happening. Notice that she hasn't suggested this for the Scottish Parliament. Why not? Call my cynical but it could be because she knows the Tories would get wiped out there under FTPT.

nancy75 · 17/12/2021 22:33

Sunak had 2 things going against him.
Firstly he is ‘to blame’ for furlough - a lot of the die hard (retired & wealthy) Tory faithful don’t like the fact he gave money away to us lazy layabouts who weren’t allowed to go to work.
Secondly quite a few of those very brexity voters don’t really like people who aren’t white…

Peregrina · 17/12/2021 22:33

The Peppa Pig world might not have been quite as bad if he had been giving a speech somewhere on the South Coast near where it was situated. Instead he was in the North East.

However the current crop of Tories seem particularly challenged when it comes to geography. They don't know how narrow the Channel is and have kidded themselves that the UK is a Pacific nation.

VladmirsPoutine · 17/12/2021 22:37

The national psyché is a bizarre thing. It wasn't shitting on starving kids or poor people that did it in the end. Nor was it even the racism. It was simply having a few too many piss ups.

nancy75 · 17/12/2021 22:37

@Peregrina, you could have just said the current crop of Tories seem particularly challenged & left it at that!
None of them seem to have a shred of decency or ability to do their jobs.

Poetrypatty · 17/12/2021 22:43

It was simply having a few too many piss ups
It's the lies and hypocrisy of that though

Peregrina · 17/12/2021 22:44

An awful lot of people have lived fairly comfortable lives and won't see starving children or poor people, or even many non white people. But I bet you that just about everyone has been touched by Covid in some way. I am sure we all know people who weren't allowed to attend funerals, couldn't meet elderly relatives but just had to wave at them though the window, and then we find that the people who make the laws not only have booze ups, but think it's a joke.

EvilPea · 17/12/2021 22:46

It worries me they’ve had a wake up and have time to turn it around

hereswhatIthink · 17/12/2021 22:53

Still 3 years left of a max 5 year term.
VladmirsPoutine · 17/12/2021 22:55

Remarkable. I laughed at the by election result. Reminded me how earlier this year the gEnErAl pUbLic were saying how they didn't 'trust' the police or had lost faith in them Grin oh really!

nancy75 · 17/12/2021 22:56

Will they try to turn it round or will they just spend the next 3 years rinsing the public purse for everything they can with dodgy contracts for their friends & family?

EvilPea · 17/12/2021 22:57

Who would want to unpick the mess at the end of all this Covid mess

VladmirsPoutine · 17/12/2021 22:59

But Boris and the Tories at large have really fucked up this time. It is a very simple and easy job to keep most tories happy and yet they've messed up.

Peregrina · 17/12/2021 23:01

Who would want to unpick the mess at the end of all this Covid mess

The Tories will run away to make money and dump the problem on Labour.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 17/12/2021 23:24

At least Boris seems relatively normal

He really doesn't. It's not normal to not admit how many kids you have. Or to deliberately mess up your hair for public appearances. Or talk about the wonders of Peppa Pig World in a speech to businesspeople. Or to feel entitled to be prime minister because you went to Eton and Oxford and think Churchill's job looked pretty cool. There is nothing normal about Johnson. You could throw a pebble randomly and hit a far more normal person by accident, and whoever they were, they'd have a a good chance of being a better prime minister than him.

nancy75 · 17/12/2021 23:34

At least Boris seems relatively normal

That has to be a joke, surely?
Even if he was the best leader the world had ever seen NORMAL would not be a word used to describe him!

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 23:41

Oh.

Well as has been said so many times, labour now doesn't seem to be of or represents their usual voter anymore?.
Rude patronising etc...

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 23:42

Oh no.
Boris as a human definitely seems someone you could chat to in a bar etc.
Corybn no. That's why he lost.
Starmer... Sort of.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 23:43

Sorry I am answering posts and not reading back through.
Corybns list of nor normal Is really out of of bounds if not normal.

What’s Corbyn got to do with anything? He’s not the PM, he’s not even the leader of the Labour Party. You can’t defend Johnson by going on & on about a man who is now just a back bench MP. Johnson & his fellow liars are bringing this all upon themselves ‘but but but Corbyn’ doesn’t cut it anymore.
Downtherefordancing · 18/12/2021 00:34

@Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas

I don't think it was ever Boris mania more corybn utter dread and fear! For all.. His many failing and faults... At least Boris seems relatively normal. Unlike extreme, snake like lying sneeky corybn who I might add... Had an extra person at his covid dinner, shock horror...

It's all a load of nonsense.

Boris? Relatively normal? Not sure what world you live in but Boris is not a normal person in my world. He’s an entitled, lying buffoon who cares not a jot about us common folk. Corbyn wasn’t the right person to lead the Labour Party but I knew he cared about people.
