Weird and wonderful board games

tigerbread20 · 15/12/2021 20:32

I’d like to get a gift for a friend who I haven’t known too long, she’s previously mentioned her and her husband enjoying playing all kind of weird and wonderful board games. Any suggestions for something I could look at? They are mid thirties if that makes a difference!

Cards against humanity

Rummikub is brilliant. But not that weird.

nancybotwinbloom · 15/12/2021 20:47

What is rummikub?

Power grid- love it!

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 15/12/2021 21:09

Not that weird but we like house of plants.

Have heard good things about azul

Kingsmede · 15/12/2021 21:41

Trainline - also not that weird but can be matched to specific countries.

Sorka · 15/12/2021 23:05

Exploding kittens. Haven’t played it myself but my friends speak highly of it.

totorostoes · 15/12/2021 23:28

We like ticket to ride, Carcassonne and catan in our house!

I bought this for my kids and it’s bored me almost to tears
CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 15/12/2021 23:46

Everyone always raves about Exploding Kittens. Including DS1. We played it at a friend's house and DS2 and I thought it was rubbish. Maybe it's better with more people.

Cards against Humanity wouldn't work with 2 people.

Rummikub is good. My teens play it all the time. And there's a game my dad has called Perudo that I remember being fun. No idea how many players you need though.

Monopoly deal or the other newer Monopoly card game are alrightI hate Monopoly with a passion

Livedandlearned · 15/12/2021 23:50

You can play peruso with two people but it's not as good

Yddraigoldragon · 15/12/2021 23:54

Patchwork.. is for only 2 players

PermanentTemporary · 15/12/2021 23:57

Wingspan. My gamer boyfriend has bought this recently and is very excited about it.

DinosaurOfFire · 16/12/2021 00:02

I have only heard good things about Wingspan, its on my own list. We like the Tiny Epic games- there are several, Tiny Epic Galaxies is fun as is Tiny Epic Quests. Star Realms is a fun 2 person card game, 7 Wonders is good. If they are board gamers I would avoid ANY form of Monopoly- the majority of people I know who play board games do not play Monopoly and would avoid it at any cost. Do you have an idea of what games she already enjoys?

Steampunk Rally is the best game we play that no one has ever heard of.

XenoBitch · 16/12/2021 00:04

Clank

Beamur · 16/12/2021 00:06

Ghost blitz. Fun rather than weird.

Kpo58 · 16/12/2021 00:15

Stoneage is good.

I wouldn't bother with exploding kittens/cards against humanity/catan/ticket to ride as if they wanted those games, they would already have them and the expansions by now as they are so mainstream.

Wingspan is excellent

Quacks is great too

& photosynthesis seems all hippy dippy at the start then you get ruthless about stealing people's light Grin

AnotherDelphinium · 16/12/2021 00:28

Not exactly weird and wonderful, but 7 wonders Duel is great, and intended for two people. If they like board games, I highly recommend it!

LegArmpits · 16/12/2021 00:30

Really Nasty Horse Racing Game
Quoridor

Stompythedinosaur · 16/12/2021 00:37

Shobu is an excellent game - the game consists of four wooden boards which you play on with stones. It is a really good tactical game for two players.

If you are more focused on unusual games you might try Polarity, which is a game based around balancing pieces on magnetic fields, or khet which is a chess-like game where the pieces have mirrors and you are aiming to bounce a lazer around the board.

Oatmeal games have some fun unusual games, but I think they are more well known. A game of cat and mouth involves shooting balls through a hole on to each other's boards. Throw throw burrito is a card game where you have to throw squishy burritos at each other when certain tricks are made.

fatmincepiesandcheese · 16/12/2021 00:38

Azul. The person who goes first is the person who last visited Portugal Grin

kavalkada · 16/12/2021 07:21

I'd be a bit careful with buying someone a board game if they are avid players. And I would never buy them any version of Monoploy because in that community Monopoly is everything that is wrong with board games.

If they love playing board games, there is a possibility they have hundereds of them.

And game dependes on what kind of games they love - easy, medium, complex, war, euro...

If you start talking to them, they will probably tell you about games they like and the games they have on their list (every gamer has at least 10 on their wish list). Without that, it would be impossible to guess.

I like easy and medium, mostly family board games and on my wish list are Concordia, Hansa Teutonica, Alchemists.

This is the list of most popular board games. As you see, you can lose yourself in it.

Tell them you would like to join them on a board game night. There is not one gamer who will say no.
