@IWanderedLonely

Nelly the robovac has been out this morning. She's missed a quarter of the front room again. Nothing on the floor to stop her. Odd.
Is there a shadow? Dog gets terribly upset if there's a shadow as he thinks it's a cliff step so avoids it. We have hard floors and two dogs and during the summer a small portion of our floor would look like it was carpeted if I didn't close the curtains sweep it by hand Wink

My extremely ancient radio alarm has been getting more unreliable. This morning I was awake before it went off and discovered it fades in for a few seconds and then out for a few minutes from the time it is supposed to go off. No wonder it wasn’t waking me. DH does not like to get rid of/replace things, but it is not he who needs the alarm because I get up and start the morning for everyone

IWanderedLonely · 17/01/2022 08:02

Champagne thanks. No shadow, its the 1/4 nearest the window, though its a very old beige carpet and is very discoloured in front of the settee. We are contemplating redecorating & new carpet this spring if DH can bear to sacrifice a little running & cycling time

You will all be very happy to know that after 30 minutes of underbreath swearing IT managed to reconnect me to the office. If it still works tomorrow I will be able to work from home again. Not that I want to do this - I prefer working with two large screens, so that I can see what I am doing.

MissConductUS · 17/01/2022 21:09

I'm helping DS pack for his trip back to uni tomorrow. We have these large heavy duty plastic bags to put his clothing in. You seal them and then use the vacuum cleaner to suck the air out of them which greatly reduces the size. DH has helped him organize his toiletries, vitamins and filled up his car with petrol.

Today is a bank holiday here. We had about four inches of snow last night, followed by rain. DH cleared the driveway while DS slept in, then they did the deck together. The weather looks okay for his drive tomorrow. We're having a final pizza dinner tonight.

I'm going to miss having him home. 😢

miss Flowers

DS is getting offers through for the various uni's he's applied to, and it suddenly hit me last week that this is it, he is actually going Sad

I have enjoyed every age more than the last (not being a natural parent to a young child) and I sort of thought it would never end.

DDs had day off but has had a miraculously recovery from her sore throat schoolitis and another negative lateral flow. I have my covid pcr test for surgery tomorrow so better be negative though have been isolating from everyone apart from DH and even then largely keeping our distance. I felt a tiny bit of sore throat and thought no but then I remembered I had dental work done on Saturday and was just from anaesthetic, phew. Surgery on Friday though that hospital tried to call me today, missed it and their number isn't anywhere to be find so hope they are not cancelling it.

My hospital video called me with all the things that can go wrong in surgery and told me I have to watch out for rest of my life Shock though did not sound too bad and they said its 1 in 5 get in or 20% if I prefer. The nurse was actually more helpful this time, was a different nurse, and she said they can do oncology by video call and she might even be able to sneak DH in there. She also had a 16 year old going through GCSEs and an autistic child/full-time TA who she has been called in about 3 times this week so very similar kids and was the first one who understood the kids issue. GP was beyond useless again, asked for help on 3 things, just e-mailed me back saying they could help with none. So I called the mental health emergency line and someone actually answered it today (still have to listen to about 10 mins of covid messages first) and they were helpful and said go via PALS (complaints) if not budging but they seem to be a bit now. I got a message back from friend re legal action, he says you can do it up to 3 years after event so wait until treatment finished and then he has a friend who would do it on no win-no fee basis though he isn't sure on outcome says will depend on medical expert (presumably saying what impact delay had) and medical records. That seems like a sensible plan. Then just replying to a few friends e-mails.

One thing nurse did mention is if they fit a drain a district nurse may start coming round to house every day from Saturday which means this week will also be untrash the downstairs from small people and small animals week. It will be good when its done though am a bit scared as it gets trashed at a very rapid rate and DH does not care and I will have a drain in though will just try and get it immaculate before we start.

Nydj · 17/01/2022 22:22

Oh Miss I hope you don’t have such a long wait before you have them both back home again.

MissConductUS · 17/01/2022 22:26

Champagne, it's true. They do actually leave, then...silence. I strongly recommend this poem by Kahlil Gibran.

On Children

Silkie, I'm glad to hear your nurse was more helpful this time. Having the nurse visit post-op is a very good idea. Drains are prone to infection.

I've just started watching the Detectionists on Amazon Prime after seeing it recommended on MN, so I'm back to watching British television.

I'm off to resume helping with the packing.

@Nydj, they will both be home in March for spring break.

Some cheese dripped off the pizza and on to the bottom of the oven, setting off one of the smoke alarms briefly.

Malpractice concerns really do shape medical practices here, for the good. When I had orthopedic surgery last summer I used a washable marker to write YES on the dodgy hip and NO on the other one. I still had to confirm it verbally before they put me under. Wrong site surgery is really embarrassing for the surgical team. 😁

DS has just taken a rapid antigen test, which was thankfully negative.

To be fair miss, DS plays electric guitar, bass and drums. We'll miss him, but perhaps not the noise Wink

mathanxiety · 18/01/2022 05:59

Don't worry, Champagne - it really doesn't end. They come back, even if there are long periods of radio silence.
Flowers
What you don't want is a situation like one of my friends had, namely a DS who came home every weekend bringing his laundry.

Plumbers came and went and apparently managed to fix whatever was wrong in the basement. I will try to do laundry tomorrow.
DD4 made molten chocolate cakes for us all in a little set of ramekins DS gave her for Christmas. I had a blob of ice cream on mine too which I now regret, but it was delicious.

IWanderedLonely · 18/01/2022 07:36

Silkies try not to worry too much about cleaning up (easier said than done I know).
Miss we love Detectorists, Mackenzie Crook is brilliant. We also love his Worzel Gummidge remakes , I think his music choices for both are great.

Silkieschickens · 18/01/2022 11:43

Just got a phone call from hospital to say operation is cancelled on Friday as whole day has had to be cancelled and so covid drive through also cancelled. But they have got me in at a private hospital with a different surgeon this Friday and to go to covid tests and msra today at that hospital. Very relieved can do same day still though just hope I get through covid test. I have been isolating apart from medical appointments and DD just had sore throat and tested negative and back at school. Of course I woke up today and sneezed and DH said he has a slight cold. Its all so mild even for colds I would be very surprised if its anything, DD is the only one socialising but someone said its a 7 week delay if you test positive. Just awaiting details through. Its 12pm on Friday now, more civilised than 7.30am but less civilised for the not eating and drinking times.

sueelleker · 18/01/2022 16:11

My DH had an appointment booked at the hospital oncology centre, as a follow-up to his bladder op. We've just had a phone call to say it will now be a telephone consultation, as the consultant is
a) a Covid contact and
b) abroad.
Don't know how much they can tell from a phone call-we shall see.

Silkieschickens · 18/01/2022 16:26

Sorry to hear your DH has been moved to video Sue though I think they can do most of it over video like results and options, its just if they need to examine him and / or do tests but normally tests are a separate appointment and they can probably examine him separately if needed. And at least it means you can be with him.

They told me the whole surgery day was cancelled for Friday so would guess my female surgeon either was close contact or got covid. I am lucky the NHS has moved my operation to a private hospital same day. Just hoping covid test is negative, it was definitely a thorough test, nearly made me sick though tbf they are supposed to be like that but normally they just do the quickest of tests.

Nydj · 18/01/2022 17:23

Good luck for your covid test Silkies and I’m so glad they are still going ahead with the operation on Friday - my heart sank when I read the first part of your post.

Also, all the best for your DH’s video appointment Sue.

I bought some pizza bases from lidl today and made the executive decision to have them for our dinner on Friday instead of the ones we usually have. If they are not up to his exacting standards, DS is not be happy.

HelenaJustina · 18/01/2022 17:54

So glad they have rescheduled silkies sometimes things come good.

In dull news I have got a long to-do list for work tomorrow. And need to clean the bathrooms this evening.

MissConductUS · 18/01/2022 18:04

DS has safely arrived at uni and his rental fridge has been moved to his new room. He made very good time driving up and it's a relief to know that he got there safely.

Nydj, when you say pizza bases, do you mean a precooked crust? We buy the dough uncooked in lumps and roll it out flat like bread dough. They're sold refrigerated.

Sue, can they do a video consultation? Those became common here because of covid. As Silkie said, unless they need to actually touch him it's an acceptable substitute.

OP posts:
Champagneforeveryone · 18/01/2022 18:33

I am thrilled to see a new update on your DS's rental fridge miss, I feel this thread has a strong connection to it Grin

MissConductUS · 18/01/2022 18:38

Champagne, there was a bit of mundane admin drama about the fridge before the holidays, so I'm glad to be able to let the group know that it has been concluded successfully. Do you think your son will select a uni that's close or far away? If he's undecided on which offer to take, will you revisit any of the uni's?

I still can't believe that he'll be done and graduating in May. Where did the four years go?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/01/2022 18:50

I had a less than nice day at work and so I let you all know that today:
I do not like buildings, or engineers and their empty promises, or procurement law, or the VOB (Verdingungsordnung für das Baugewerbe). And breathe.

silkie Your opening sentences did give me a jolt, I am glad they thought of something.
sue A video consultation is perhaps less stressful (and you can record it off screen for note keeping)

MissConductUS · 18/01/2022 18:59

Prok, I'm sorry you had a rubbish day. First days back can be like that, as you discover everything that has gone wrong since the last time you were there in person.

Champagne, not to belabor the point, but this is not any ordinary student fridge. It has a built in 850 watt microwave and a separate freezer compartment for ice cream and other frozen essentials.

MicroFridge

So the movement of the appliance was a high priority.

OP posts:
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 18/01/2022 19:19

miss that is a micro fidge? It is larger than the fridge we use for a family of four Grin.

MissConductUS · 18/01/2022 19:24

Prok, Americans love a large fridge. Mine is 25 cubic feet and taller than I am. And we have a smaller one in the garage. Along with an upright freezer. Grin
