Due to the lack of any mention of Christmas.

East 17 - Stay Another Day Xmas Confused

Definitely the East 17 dirge - it's a pile of shit at any time of year.
The Power Of Love by FGTH. Great song but nowt to do with Christmas, despite the video.

purpledagger · 12/12/2021 17:02

Spice Girls -2 become 1. Was an Xmas number 1, but no mention of Christmas.

MichelleScarn · 12/12/2021 17:07

Its one I love, Only You by the Flying Pickets.
Baa Da da da.....

That Do They Know Its Xmas patronising rubbish.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 12/12/2021 19:26

Baby It’s Cold Outside. Only ever heard it played around Xmas but it literally doesn’t even mention anything festive other than cold weather.

Also there are some Xmas songs that are just really unfestive. I listen to Heart Xmas sometimes and they play the same gloomy songs like A Spaceman Came Travelling, 2000 Miles and that bloody miserable Christmas Lights song by Coldplay. Doesn’t put me in the festive mood at all.

Holothane · 12/12/2021 19:28

Mull 0f kintire awful,dirge.

DH put Heart Xmas on in the car yesterday and they played all three of those songs while we were listening Xmas Grin.

We had the same conversation about Christmas Lights by Coldplay. There are some bands who should never release a Christmas song and Coldplay are one of them. The only person more miserable in a Christmas song would be Morrisey if he wrote one (he hasn't, has he?)

They did try and jazz things up a bit with Brenda Lee, she rocked around the Christmas tree twice while we were listening, and we were only out a couple of hours.

Tillymintpolo · 12/12/2021 19:36

Tbf East 17 played a blinder, fluffy parkas and a few bells and Tony Mortimer was set for life

PanettoneSeason · 12/12/2021 19:40

I’m shocked at all this East-17 negativity 🤔 Stay anuuuuuva daaaaaay Xmas GrinStar

BettyOBarley · 12/12/2021 19:43

Ha this thread made me laugh as we were driving back from dinner earlier and Christmas Lights by Coldplay came on Heart Xmas radio. DH was like what's this depressing rubbish?! this isn't a Christmas song!! Grin

LadyCatStark · 12/12/2021 19:43

Any John Lewis covers.
That Westlife one that was Christmas number one it think it was called Seasons in the Sun (although I did love it at the time!).

LadyCatStark · 12/12/2021 19:45

Oh and Spotify played me one by Sam Smith the other day. That miserable whiner has no business making Christmas songs!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 12/12/2021 19:45

Stay Another Day is an incredibly sad song. Written for the brother of one of the band members.

SpeckyWithTheGoodHair · 12/12/2021 19:46

Steps 'Heartbeat'.

Just because there's snow in the video doesn't make it a Christmas song.

OneLlamaOpenSleigh · 12/12/2021 19:49

These both mention Christmas but not really festive:

Stop the Cavalry
When Christmas Comes Around

RebeccaCloud9 · 12/12/2021 19:49

There are enough jingle bells in Stay (East 17) to power Santa's sleigh. YABU.

Geamhradh · 12/12/2021 19:49

Stay Another Day is on my top Christmas song playlist.
Maybe because I'm ancient enough to remember it being on ToTP. Then again, in ancient enough to remember having my hair dried on a Sunday night to Mull of Kintyre as well.
And the second record I ever had was Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks.
So, you're all BU. Xmas Grin

ChrissyPlummer · 12/12/2021 20:00

Tony Mortimer wrote ‘Stay Another Day’ as his brother committed suicide and he was thinking what it would be like to just have one more conversation, one more day with someone. The original video was them in the fluffy coats, you can see TM crying. They tweaked the song to make it a love song about a failed relationship and added the bells. The original video was scrapped and the promo that went out at the time was the one of them in the studio round the piano. It’s only the last few years they’ve gone back to using the original.

For me, although it’s one of my favourite songs of all time: Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind. Christmas number 1 in 1987 but nary a sniff of actual Christmas.

Hobbes8 · 12/12/2021 20:30

Being a Christmas no 1 doesn’t make a song Christmassy. Otherwise Bob the Builder would be played every year.

Stay Another Day has snow in the video and chimes over the last chorus so it totally works.

Tillymintpolo · 12/12/2021 20:39

Wasn’t Mr Blobby Xmas number 1 ?!!

gabsdot45 · 12/12/2021 20:45

I love Stay another day. I got married in Dec 94 when this was No. 1 and it always brings back the memories

WildRosie · 12/12/2021 20:56

I confess the main reason I can't stand Stay Another Day is that is was the year I decided I'd had enough of Christmas because of a spectacularly dreadful Christmas Eve I had to endure with two very tired and emotional parents who'd been badly let down by two of my brothers and their other halves. I wince whenever I hear the turgid whiny crap. Sleigh bells, chimes and fur coats do not a Christmas song makeAngry.

rockingthelook · 12/12/2021 21:24

Stay Another Day for sure...but loathe The Pretenders 2000 miles, and this new Ed Sheeran and Elton one is crap, love Ed but he really shit out on this one

Aderyn21 · 12/12/2021 21:29

I love Stay - the story behind it is heartbreaking.
Also love 2000 miles, although it is too depressing to be a Christmas song.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 12/12/2021 21:32

Ha! Not at all surprised. They must have about 12 songs that are always on rotation. I remember moaning about 2000 Miles always being on last year. This year, I was flipping though the DAB channels late Nov, saw Heart Xmas was back, and guess what the first blimming track I heard was? They’re also very keen on Step into Christmas and a really gloomy slow recording of White Christmas.

There’s also Christmas FM which has a wider variety of music, but doesn’t always work when you’re driving around.
