How much fruit do you eat in a day?

I’ve had a terrible diet for the last year and basically gorged myself 18lbs heavier. I am taking control of my diet again and have been eating well for the last 3 weeks. I love fruit and have been eating a great selection each day.

I’d like to see what everyone else does (working from home, so hard to compare) I am currently eating; red grapes, clementines, watermelon and kiwi on a daily basis. I just want to feel healthier by feeding my body the things that are good for it. (Yes I know about the sugar content but I don’t drink fizzy drinks or ass sugar to anything so I can cope with that)

B/fast - porridge or wholemeal toast with a satsuma or plums.
Lunch - soup or sandwich with salad and then apple/pear/some grapes
Supper - usually followed by some sort of fruit or dried fruit pudding.

So maybe four or five pieces in a day. I eat them as snacks at work too.

NMC2022 · 11/12/2021 14:14

2-3 pieces
Always have a banana or raspberries in porridge for breakfast, then whichever I don't have I have on my break at work
The odd apple or mango
Mostly I eat veg and salad I guess rather than fruit

On office days I take 3 items, usually an apple, orange, carrot, sometimes grapes and bananas and pears too. I eat these through the day at my desk. On home days I’m more likely to snack on carbs as they are available.

Like you I don’t care about too many sugars as I eat a fairly healthy diet otherwise.

MrsPleasant · 11/12/2021 14:20

Very little fruit. Maybe once a week if that.

cptartapp · 11/12/2021 14:27

Very very rarely eat fruit, just not keen. I could eat raspberries and strawberries or a banana but wouldn't enjoy them.
Tons of veg though.

lljkk · 11/12/2021 14:33

One day I might have 6 bananas & another day barely a tiny satsuma.

By the time you count courgettes, tomatoes, avocados, sweet fruits -- often 7 portions/day.

Kinsters · 11/12/2021 14:47

I normally have some berries or a peach on my cereal in the morning. Maybe a banana for a snack. After dinner we always share a fruit plate with a variety of cut fruits eg a couple of apple, half a pineapple and a couple of kiwis for the two of us plus toddler DD. It's something my in-laws always do and now we do the same, it's a nice way to finish dinner.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/12/2021 14:49

None I hate fruit. Prob because I don’t have a sweet tooth. I do eat tons of veg and salad though so I don’t think it matters nutritionally.

Bookaholic73 · 11/12/2021 14:53

1 or 2 pieces. I think it’s more important to eat veg.

samthebordercollie · 11/12/2021 14:54

One or two, a kiwi fruit and an orange as a dessert. It's very high in fructose, and so I eat more veg and salad.

Novasmummy · 11/12/2021 15:01

None on an average day Blush

Then about once a week I'll eat 3 or 4 pieces in one day. My kids are all fruit enthusiasts so my fruit bowl goes from full to empty in precisely 55 seconds. I do like a little bit of tinned fruit maybe once a week too, with yoghurt or as part of my dessert.

ISpyCobraKai · 11/12/2021 15:04

A supermarket snack pack at most, but often none.
My diet over a week would have enough fruit and veg maybe 80% of the time, but mainly veg, I don't have a sweet tooth so that's why.

JKDinomum · 11/12/2021 15:05

I might have one piece or portion of fruit about three or four times a week. But I eat lots of veg. I buy strawberries, blueberries etc but tend to prioritise giving them to the kids as I know they will eat less veg.

MushroomHunter · 11/12/2021 15:11

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I have a sweet tooth so maybe it’s helping me avoid reaching for the chocolate. I eat 2 portions of veg a day so eventually I will try and up my intake of that too. Using fruit as a dessert plate is a great idea, I think I’ll start doing that too.

I love mangos and raspberries, I’d kind of forgotten about them so thanks for the reminder. I’ll add them to the shopping list.

Is tined and dry fruit ok?

TisTheSeasonToBeVegan · 11/12/2021 15:14

I eat a couple of fresh fruits each day and then some dried fruit as well, but I eat more vegetables than fruit. I tend to eat dried fruit with breakfast, fresh fruit as snacks and then have different salads for lunch and cooked vegetables including legumes for dinner. I’m a vegan though so fruit and veg makes up much of my diet.

TisTheSeasonToBeVegan · 11/12/2021 15:17

With tinned, it’s best to go for ones in their natural juice rather than syrups. Dried fruit like apricots are good as they’re full of iron and fibre.

JingleJingleAllTheWay · 11/12/2021 15:26

None! I eat veg though. Love veg. No wonder I'm always ill.

EssexLioness · 11/12/2021 16:41

Rarely have any fruit at all but I’m vegan and eat an absolute ton of veg. Rarely ill and don’t even get many coughs or colds

Both tinned and dried fruit are fine.

Coldenough · 11/12/2021 19:01

I prefer veg to fruit. Today I made myself eat about six raspberries. But I also ate carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and peas.

Tal45 · 11/12/2021 19:02

Dried fruit is very high in sugar so I'd give it a miss - think how many raisins you'd easily eat compared to how many actual grapes you might eat in one sitting. If you're just having a couple of dried apricots that's fine but don't eat tons of it.
With tinned fruit always get in juice not syrup.
Veggies are better nutritionally and lower sugar so definitely try to up them.

PoinsettaPrincess · 11/12/2021 19:10

Normally blackberries, raspberries and strawberries for breakfast with Greek yoghurt. Possibly a satsuma and plum mid afternoon. I love pomegranates at this time of year so normally one a few times a week. I’m more of a vegetable person though so I tend to snack on cucumber, tomatoes, raw carrot, peppers and salad leaves during the day.

BigButtons · 11/12/2021 19:11

Non at all. I don’t like fruit- except for the stuff you count as a vegetable such as tomatoes. I do eat a shit tonne of veg though.

Novasmummy · 11/12/2021 20:04

Whenever I cut down chocolate I do eat more fruit. But right now when I get a fruit craving I'm reaching for the mince pies and quality street. If those count then I've been eating fruit all day today Wink
