Why do all the winter coats this year look like dressing gowns?

Just tried on a million coats and nothing looks good. Why does everything this year have a tie waist and just one button? They all look like something I'd wear around the house. Ridiculous.

I'm fed up with impractical clothes! I placed a bid on a 'winter coat' on Ebay before I realised it had three quarter length sleeves (What? WHY!)

DroopyClematis · 10/12/2021 13:02

I agree.
That or they're very thick furry jobs that make you look like a square yeti or they're so thickly padded that you look like Michelin Man.

TellingBone · 10/12/2021 13:06

People going round looking like insulated immersion heaters

Pinkflipflop85 · 10/12/2021 13:11

I agree!

Finally wanted to treat myself to a new coat this year and they all look bloody awful.

Sparklingbrook · 10/12/2021 13:14

Thank you for saying this! I am looking for a nice winter coat, and there's no such thing.
Either huge padded jackets like duvets with sleeves or yes, dressing gowns. Plus the boucle stuff which I also hate.

I love my new parka , I've always wanted one and finally I got around to buying it! Big furry hood , the works. Wasnt mega expensive either
It'll be my ' big winter coat '
I do like the teddy bear coats too.

@Thelnebriati Because as a short person "Three quarter" sleeves are full length on me. It's only tall people who complain about these things which actually promote size inclusivity

I’m short and tried on one of those padded coats and definitely looked like the Michelin man. Does that style actually look good on anyone? I agree the coat styles this season aren’t great.

megletthesecond · 10/12/2021 14:18

That red coat is fab. Warm and hopefully waterproof. Good pockets.
It's not a fashion show you know!

I'd never get in the car in it and I'm fairly sure it'd get stuck in the car door regularly. It's impractical for me. I guess if you were going on a dog walk it might be good, you could put the full poo bag in the big pockets?

Hobbs have great coats. I've had mine years, still looks new and has held his shape perfectly. No tent or duvet looks in sight (I'm a 14-busty with hips- not a twiglet!) They aren't cheap but they've usually got an offer of some sort on.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 10/12/2021 14:30

I agree! I went to Hobbs and found a nice brown puffa, but I just couldn't work out the massive hood. I gave up.

I don't feel so bad now for being fussy! It's not actually me.

Blackbirdblue30 · 10/12/2021 14:31

I wanted to treat myself this year too, and couldn't find anything nice in the shops. I bought one of the giant furry coats as a cheap compromise. I look like a Womble but its like wearing a duvet. I know what I have in mind and am searching online and vintage/style shops if that's any help.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 10/12/2021 14:31

The Tilda Hobbs camel coat is gorgeous, I tried that on. Waiting for a sale on it.

Sparklfairy · 10/12/2021 14:35

Its a government conspiracy. They're making it so you don't want to go out in public Grin

Billandben444 · 10/12/2021 14:35

Because last winter we were living in pj's so 'they' thought the dressing-gown look would be popular?!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 10/12/2021 14:36

You can get padded and fitted - Monsoon and Phase Eight are good.

My last puffer was from Monsoon. I had it about 8 years.

PermanentlyTired03 · 10/12/2021 14:38

Barbour do a good fitted puffer jacket. Mine sits on my hips, but they do longer lengths

Is that the same Government who's been telling us to stop lounging around at home and to 'get back to work' so we can fill the city centre offices that they own and buy lots of coffee and sandwiches?

I couldn't tell whether the dress the weather woman on the BBC was wearing one day this week was a dress or a nightie. It was a pale colour with cartoon characters all over it.

thereisonlyoneofme · 10/12/2021 14:47

I couldnt find a nice winter coat so took a 20 year old midi coat to the tailors and got it shortened, looks great !

GlitterSquid · 10/12/2021 14:49

@TellingBone

You're right! Immersion heaters! I'd never seen it like that before.....I will now! Grin

BigWoollyJumpers · 10/12/2021 14:54

I wish I still had my favourite ever coat. Nothing has ever come close. I had it for 30 years until it really needed to go. It was from Laura Ashley and cost me £150 in 1992, which I think was quite expensive for then.

It was an ankle length, navy blue, wool coat, with velvet collar and cuffs. Double breasted and close fitting on the top, and then gently flared out at the bottom. Very Edwardian/Russian military style. Worn with high heeled long boots, it was just amazing.

Sigh.

FlipFlops4Me · 10/12/2021 15:01

I bought an absolutely gorgeous second hand duffle coat on Ebay. 100% wool, good length, zip as well as toggles, inner pocket and two outer, full length sleeves and a hood.

I'm hoping they've got more decent (ie cheap) second hand stuff.
