Why do all the winter coats this year look like dressing gowns?

Just tried on a million coats and nothing looks good. Why does everything this year have a tie waist and just one button? They all look like something I'd wear around the house. Ridiculous.

Coats have been rubbish (imho) for years since they became oversized/slouchy. It's quite hard to find fitted wool coats except at Hobbs and other less trend-driven shops. Very annoying!

@DroopyClematis

I agree. That or they're very thick furry jobs that make you look like a square yeti or they're so thickly padded that you look like Michelin Man.

It was from Laura Ashley and cost me £150 in 1992, which I think was quite expensive for then.

That's quite expensive for now!!

I don't like the dressing gown look either, and get all my coats 2nd hand from eBay. Don't care if they're "in" or not as long as I like them Smile

@BigWoollyJumpers that does actually sound very lovely... right up my street.

ThreeWiseBuddhas · 10/12/2021 16:46

I bought a 'teddy coat' yesterday
I look like a very short chubby pimp in it
It's going back on Monday

TellingBone · 10/12/2021 16:49

'chubby pimp' 😂

I bought two different second hand coats on Ebay last year. Both of them arrived absolutely stinking of perfume, air freshener and perfumed washing powder even though it was meant to be dry clean only. Yuck! Never again. I'm embarrassed to say that I gave them to a charity collection although it's really not fair on the people receiving them.

I've tried Hobbs and Phase Eight but none of them fit as I'm a larger size on my bottom half so I really needed a flared coat. Mind you, at least they did look like proper coats. If I wanted a new dressing gown, I'd buy a new dressing gown.

Would you believe I ended up buying one from a market stall today! It fits much better than anything on the high street.

Do the teddy coats leave fluff everywhere?

Binglebong · 10/12/2021 19:14

I got this which I love, although i did have to steam it to get out the wrinkles.www.joebrowns.co.uk/best-berry-coat-wj494#colour=187

They also have one that sounds like Wooley's but mid calf length.

@BigWoollyJumpers
Have you looked at Joe Browns? There are a couple of double breasted military style coats on their website

friedeggandsauce · 10/12/2021 19:50

I got one from next which was padded but not so long you can't walk or drive!!

Snap!

I bought a Peter Storm winter coat. It's lovely and warm, but I look decidedly matronly in it.
It ties in the middle, but I think the belt is located slightly too high for my very average height. That, coupled with the padding, make my boobs look like they go down to my waist.

Tried a joules one last year, but it cost twice as much, isn't warm and the zip pocket got jammed fast in the fabric the first wear Hmm.

FabriqueBelgique · 10/12/2021 20:54

I’m wearing a lovely cosy and fluffy teddy bear coat but it’s crap in the harsh wind!

My less attractive puffer does do a much better job of being a coat, I have to admit.

DSGR · 10/12/2021 21:03

I love a wrap coat. My Jaegar ones are classics

Laiste · 10/12/2021 21:33

Depends what you're mostly up to when you're being outside.

I admit my main coat is a padded 'hot water tank jacket' job at the moment - zip up and big fluffy hood clamped down over my head. But then i spend a good deal of time 5 days a week standing in the BLOODY STUPID QUEUE ROUND THE BLOCK waiting for the school to open their gates and accept/release the kids one at a time Hmm I need something really warm as the wind coming off the hills is freezing and i don't give a damn about immersion heater vibes.

I have seen a few mums stood waiting in the wrap style coats. They are mostly so thin or pulled round them so tight you can see the lines of what they are wearing underneath. They flap and pull open at the drop of a hat and when hands are full of pram and school bags and other hands they are then at the mercy of the wind and rain and look bloody frozen.
