Confused... is this a scam??

So I received a parcel yesterday, with my full name (including initial) and address, but I didn't order it and no-one else seems to have either... It's not really a "gift" type thing anyway (some canvas storage box thing with rope handles!) but I've no idea what the deal is and it's got me disconcerted...

I've checked my online banking and amazon orders (nothing) and changed my password just in case, although I have no idea if it even came from amazon.

Has anyone had this?? Any idea wtf is going on, and should I be "doing" anything about it??

TIA

Hopeful bump for the evening crowd...

Have you actually ordered anything else from Amazon? I've ordered a million things which have been correct, but once I ordered a heavy duty suction hook
And received a canvas drawstring bag with a dog on it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Forion · 10/12/2021 17:22

I think it's Chinese sellers doing this to concoct fake reviews. It's a thing apparently.

Clarkey86 · 10/12/2021 17:23

Normally when they do it for fake reviews it’s something really small and easy to post like seed packets so I’d be surprised if it’s a bigger item.

Did it have Amazon tape on? Most Amazon parcels are really obviously Amazon now. Like someone else said, it could be that you’ve ordered something but they’ve packed an item with the wrong code - that’s quite common.

Alternatively someone has defo sent you a gift.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 10/12/2021 17:24

No idea but I just received notification to collect items.that I apparently ordered online. Of which I have no record or recollection 😂

Google brushing scams.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 10/12/2021 19:23

It just seems quite a big and heavy thing for a brushing scam - I thought that was little light stuff.... but what do I know! There's no other undelivered amazon orders - send it wasn't 100% from amazon (in fact, it was delivered by hermes - not sure it can be amazon??)

Could someone have sent you this as a Christmas gift?

ChuckMater · 10/12/2021 19:29

My dm had two or three random things like this last year. Very strange

EnterFunnyNameHere · 10/12/2021 19:30

Well if it is a gift I don't know who from! It would have to be someone who knows my initial as well as first name, whichnisnpretty much jus DDad and DB - and they both deny it!!

A couple of years ago we had a random spate of stuff arriving from Amazon that we hadn't bought, and we thought it was some sort of hack of my partner's Amazon account, or some sort of address error. We contacted Amazon and they confirmed they were being sent, apparently deliberately, from another account, but obviously they couldn't tell us anything else. Never did figure out what it was about.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 10/12/2021 19:50

So weird!! I don't know what to do about it, except keep an eye on transactions online...

Why haven't you opened it?

FenceSplinters · 10/12/2021 19:57

@LuluBlakey1

Why haven't you opened it?
She has.

@50ShadesOfCatholic I've had an email today telling me my (none existent) order is ready for collection with a link to click to track it. A scam of some sort I assume 🤷‍♀️

RoseyLentil · 10/12/2021 20:02

The email with link is definitely a scam. Delete it and block the sender 👍

No, it's a very well known retailer and the link goes to their site. I'll call them.

skyblueone · 10/12/2021 20:30

@50ShadesOfCatholic I'm confused..am I missing something? Which retailer?

Q123R · 10/12/2021 20:37

I got a couple of books a few months ago. Both with many, many reviews so unlikely to be a brushing scam.

In my case I do.suspect someone (the books seemed to be sending a message, and something had happened not long before) but I don't know for certain.

Echobelly · 10/12/2021 20:40

Yes, it's for a fake review I'm pretty sure - it won't harm you. A few friends have received things like whistles and paintbrushes and it's all the same thing.

callygoballistic · 10/12/2021 20:42

I had an iphone 13 delivered 2 weeks ago that I hadn't ordered (not amazon). It turns out a credit account had been opened in my name and the phone was dispatched to my address.

Having googled it apparently the next part of the scam is for a 'delivery driver' to come and claim the parcel as misdelivered then you give them it and you are obviously let with the outstanding money to pay on an account in your name that you don't know you have.

This stage didn't happen with me because the moment I received an iphone 13 in my name that I hadn't ordered I called the company that sent it and a fraud stop was put on the whole thing.

Yours seems like a low value item but I'd keep an eye out to see if you are being groomed to return the item in the expectation that when something else high value arrives you'll also hand it over.

Interesting - but how did you know where it came from?!

callygoballistic · 10/12/2021 20:45

EnterFunnyNameHere the iphone was dispatched by AO, it said so in the packaging. I don't know if you're being scammed in the same way because obviously the package you've received isn't the same or from a name shop but it might be possible that you're being groomed to return stuff at the door so that when something high value does arrive you just give it back.

EnterFunnyNameHere · 10/12/2021 21:20

Well I can't figure out who it's from... so I guess just ignore anyone who comes foe it back? But it's just a storage box!

So weird!!

I'm in NZ and I received an email from a v well known retailer saying my order was ready for pick up. Except I don't think I have an order to pick up. We've been in lockdown recently so online shopping is a bit disrupted with delays for deliveries and pick ups. So possibly I have a forgotten order but I think more likely there's a glitch at their end.
