What have you bought by mistake? Was it good or from the abyss?

Aaargghhh!
Picked up what I thought were Red Leicester slices to go on some Ritz crackers. Have got... vegan cheese. Gluten-free, milk-free, made with coconut oil. Unless any vegans can tell me it tastes different melted, all I can say is yuk, double yuk, eww and IACGMOOH Wink
I tend to buy the wrong thing when not concentrating or when products are together but so close I pick up Korma instead of Massala for example.
Can't think of any mistake that has ever ended well and introduced me to something awesome.
Please cheer me up with mistakes that were more costly or vile than mine (two quid down the drain, thought it was dear). Or alternatively any wonderful breakthrough/serendipitous discoveries Grin

DH managed to buy Nosecco while we were camping last year. It tasted nothing like wine. (I didn't care about the alcohol bit). I ended up having to drive to the supermarket for a bottle since I was the only one who hadn't had a drink.

WhoppingBigBackside · 08/12/2021 18:48

I bought 2 packs of non-vegetarian sausages in the clearance section because the packaging was similar to meat-free ones

Vegan cheese is not very nice melted or otherwise

Novasmummy · 08/12/2021 18:50

Accidentally bought mini poppadoms instead of prawn crackers because they were next to each other. Didn't go as well with Chinese food, but sometimes I do buy them still.

My pizza came with accidental jalapeños once and now I order it that way.

I got the wrong pickled onions once, now we buy two kinds Blush

Accidentally bought seabrooks Worcester sauce crisps instead of seabrooks prawn cocktail. I now love the Worcester sauce flavour and choose them. Don't like the prawn cocktail at all anymore.

Ordered hash browns got hash brown bites. Now buy either of those depending on what we fancy.

Ordered sour cream and chive dip got onion and garlic dip. I prefer the latter now.

Vegan cheese is rank though. Like plastic.

Ah thanks, shall bin it then.
I had some lovely veggie sausages once - had caerphilly in them and a herb, maybe tarragon - but have never found them again (not an accidental purchase, was catering for a vegetarian friend).
Nosecco sounds ominous Wine

When we lived in Germany. Was accidentally delivered a Spaghetti Bolognese pizza. It might sound odd but it really worked and we often got it after that. (Yes, it was actual spaghetti on pizza. I can hear the whole of Italy fainting in shock!(

SequinsandStiIettos · 08/12/2021 18:58

I have had bolognese on pizza before but not spaghetti on as well - have often used bread for residual sauce etc so it wouldn't be that different.
In Germany the number of times I ended up with fish and crisps at the Altstadtfest was ridiculous (because some stalls were selling fisch and chips rather than pommes and I wasn't concentrating and thought they were appealing to tourists).
Always got time for a SpaghettiEis, mind! Wink

Some vegan cheese is nice - applewood and mozzarisella. But the others are mostly not.

Anystarinthesky · 08/12/2021 19:12

I bought 'free from' burgers, for some reason I thought this meant meat free! (I'm a vegetarian).

I was eating one it was revolting, discovered it was 'gluten free'and also the packet was out of date.

I was given a refund and a £2 voucher back.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 08/12/2021 19:17

DH bought reduced fat cheddar cheese.

Might as well have sliced up some polystyrene for my sandwiches.

Bought the DVD of 'Zathura' from a charity shop ... found inside the box, instead of the Jumanji in space I was expecting, was some obscure Spanish sci-fi film without subtitles. I know zero Spanish apart from a couple of tourist phrases I learnt for a holiday 20 years ago, and the film looked like rubbish anyway.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 08/12/2021 19:19

... if any Mumsnetters are missing their obscure Spanish sci-fi film, and recently donated their Zathura to a charity shop, I hope I have solved a mystery for you.

According to DH, 15 years ago I cooked the worst meal I've ever made. I think it was a pasta bake but when I opened the chopped tomatoes they had garlic in them, we both like garlic, how bad can it be. Very, very bad!

Clymene · 08/12/2021 19:21

Vegan cheese is the worst 'food' in the world. Tastes of disappointment

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/12/2021 19:23

Once accidentally bought garlic cream cheese and used it to make a cheesecake. It definitely did not go down well!

Oh, they're awful, aren't they? I bought some on purpose - I like tinned toms and I am a garlic-with-everything-savoury person - I thought they'd be my new best friend. I was so wrong!
Sunsetsupernova · 08/12/2021 19:26

Last weekend I bought these thinking they were regular wafers rather than filled with coconut. I was bitterly disappointed when DP pointed it out to me but they are absolutely delicious and I now can’t stop eating them

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 08/12/2021 19:27

Irish cream french fancies instead of the white Christmas ones.

I've still not got over it. I sulked all night due to hating Irish cream and missing out on the white ones I'd craved Grin

OliveHenry · 08/12/2021 19:28

I once ended up with the wrong order from our local Indian takeaway (not sure if it was my mistake or theirs).

I ended up with keema palak - minced beef/lamb with spinach.

It looked like a very unappetising combination of dog food and cow pat.

But I tasted it 'cos I was very hungry and it was bloody lovely!

I order it quite a lot now Grin

midlifecrash · 08/12/2021 19:30

Got Greek yogurt with honey in by mistake, and DP used it for a tahini garlic dressing. This was not a wonderful discovery

SequinsandStiIettos · 08/12/2021 20:16

Cheese is now in the bin. Ironically, it was called Taste
Kudos to all vegans out there for the sacrifices you make, genuinely.
It was demonic cheese Grin

Accidentally bought cat iams instead of dog iams (supermarket delivery) but Dh didn't notice when he fed the dog. My poor dog was SO sick. It was all over the living room. EVERYWHERE.

We still speak of it.

deste · 08/12/2021 20:34

Arla lactofree cheddar tastes exactly like normal cheddar. My GD was dairy free for the first year of her life and her other granny let me taste it. I t was really good in case anyone is interested. I never did find a good yoghurt.

itspartytime · 08/12/2021 20:43

My DH did the shopping and I'd put a Cauliflower on the list. When he got back I was still working so he said he'd start cooking the cauliflower cheese for tea. Then I heard lots of laughing. Went over to see what he was laughing about and just saw a pile of leaves . The cauliflower leaves all turned out to be cabbage! No cauliflower hiding in there at all!

That's really funny! I can just imagine your DH thinking 'this cauliflower is a bit small' as he removed more and more leaves.
Bobsyer · 08/12/2021 20:52

DH and I were invited to a housewarming party and ended up buying non-alcoholic beer by accident. It was the only one in the chiller.

Absolutely mortified. I wanted the booze!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 08/12/2021 20:54

Accidentally bought monosodium glutamate crystals thinking they were coconut flakes.

Monosodium glutamate does not taste good in chocolate pudding.
