Apologies if this has been done/ posted about before. I received this letter through the post today- from the Jehovah’s witnesses. With covid I’m assuming it’s how there communicating with people. I was really surprised that it was hand written, must take hours too write those out, price of stamps - I dread too think. Has anybody else received one? No disrespect, I’m very happy with my own faith, it’s gone in the bin.

This thread is really uncomfortable reading. I'm a Christian and so don't spout hate for anyone else's lifestyle or religious beliefs.

If you don't agree with someone else's religion, move on. No need for all the venom that this religious group is getting on this thread though.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 03/12/2021 22:32
@santasmuma the good news that they're spreading is the word of God. But as they're religious people I'm sure you'd already know this.

Feel free to head to the JW website to find out more but if you're not interested then that's absolutely okay and that's the point. JW spread the news by either letter writing, knocking on doors and so on and if you're not interested in hearing what they've said, at least on their part they've tried as best as they could. It's quite simple really
Some are speaking as if the letters are inviting them to join a cult

Well, they are.

When will you get the message that people don't want to be bothered by you!

the good news that they're spreading is the word of God

People who want find out more about any particular religion can, they have the capacity to do so!

I don't irritate people spreading the word of crochet! I assume if people are interested they'll use their life skills to find out what they want to know.

Letters are just as annoying as door knocking.

What are your thoughts on the two witness rule in this religion?

I didn’t evennneed to open the thread to know it’d be JW’s

BringBackThinEyebrows · 03/12/2021 22:44

I got one last year. The handwriting was absolutely beautiful.

521Jeanie · 03/12/2021 22:50

I've had two! We quite often used to get JWs knocking in this road so I guess this is their Covid friendly version.

OhWhyNot · 03/12/2021 22:58

Yes we got one of these letters last year.

I was quite impressed.

Intheopinionofourexpert · 03/12/2021 22:59

@Babdoc

intheopinionofourexpert, when we have a child patient of JW parents, we simply apply for a court order to allow us to administer a blood transfusion if it is clinically essential. No UK doctor would allow a child to die for lack of blood products, whatever its parents' religious beliefs. I can only recall one case in the medical journals of a JW child who had to be adopted post operatively as the parents refused to take him back, saying he was now a child of Satan. Otherwise I think parents are usually relieved when the decision is taken out of their hands. I know anaesthetic colleagues who have successfully persuaded adult JWs to receive blood for open heart surgery, too. As a Christian myself, but not a JW, I cannot believe a loving God would want anyone to die prematurely when a willing blood donor is freely available. I suspect they are misinterpreting the Old Testament injunction not to take blood. Which obviously refers to killing and injuring, not transfusions, which were thousands of years in the future at that point!
I'm glad that's your experience Babdoc. That wasn't mine when I worked in theatres (many) years ago. Luckily we had a Cell Saver, so had that ready to be used should the need arise, but I never recall a court order. Even for adult JWs, I think it is unacceptable for clinical staff to be put in the situation of being expected to stand by and allow someone to exsanguinate.

Definitely agree with your last point too!

That article was excellent and shows exactly how things are if you leave your shunned and the tithings the guilt trips, no I’m sorry not for me. I’ll answer to god thank you.

Carboncheque · 03/12/2021 23:17

’If you don't agree with someone else's religion, move on. No need for all the venom that this religious group is getting on this thread though.’

It’s a proselytising religion. They actively try to convert people. I have no problem with other people’s religion but if you come and knock on my front door (or post a letter) to ‘spread the word’ I’m entitled to have a view on that.

The rule that abuse allegations will only be followed up if there are two witnesses to the abuse (obviously, this is very rarely the case especially with child sexual abuse).

What do you think of this?

We’re discussing a rather unpleasant cult, with a history of concealing various types of abuse. Your hurty feelz are irrelevant.

I got a phone call years ago when I was living abroad, inviting me to the local English-language church. They must have combed the phone book looking for English-sounding names. I'm a massive atheist and it was a gross invasion of my privacy, which I told them in no uncertain terms.

PurBal · 04/12/2021 09:43

Yes. JW have to engaged in mission and evangelism as part of their faith. I get annoyed there’s nowhere to write back to… especially when I disagree with interpretation of particular scripture and I’d like discourse.

21dolly · 04/12/2021 09:50

@Sandyfeet101 do you know anyone in real life who's a JW? Have you spoken to a JW in real life or do you read articles online, take everything word for word and then have a view on the whole religion based on what you've read?

I can tell you, that isn't a 'rule' at all. JWs are very transparent and you know everything there is to know when getting baptised. There is no two witness rule yet you're making damaging statements on forums about something that isn't true? That's a really strange thing to do and I won't be responding again. Keep reading your articles

CharlotteRose90 · 04/12/2021 09:55

I get on average 5 a month it’s an absolute joke now, I think they do it on purpose half the time as I have rang their office multiple times saying do not contact me. I do not wish to join that disgusting cult. My best friend is an ex jw so I know all what they do and none of it interests me, they also do not want me as I’ve had multiple blood transfusions yet they still contact me 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

So all the victims are lying? Are you claiming that any report of abuse would immediately be reported to the police? Not referred to the 'elders' to be dealt with internally?

Your response tells me all I need to know to be honest, complete refusal to engage or even acknowledge that this is an issue. I imagine that's the same response I'd get if I spoke to JWs in real life about this - so I'll have to rely on news and documentaries for my information.

CouncilHousedAndViolentBaby · 04/12/2021 10:02

I had one of these months ago scared the shite out of me lol

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 04/12/2021 10:15

I had a typed one a month or so ago. At the time I was between jobs and didn't have much to do, so I wrote "no thank you" on it, in capitals, put their address on the front and put it back in to post box return to sender. Grin

loveisanopensore · 04/12/2021 10:22

We got one in Polish a few months ago.

21dolly · 04/12/2021 10:23

There's no refusal to engage or acknowledge anything. You're trying to tell me there's a two witness rule (which I've literally never heard about in my life even though I know all of the 'rules') and I'm telling you that's not the case. Maybe that's how a certain congregation decided to deal with a situation but that is not a rule.

I imagine that's the same response I'd get if I spoke to JWs in real life about this -

Maybe. And this is just a wild guess. It's because they'd be telling you the truth...?
Again, feel free to do your own research on the JW website or rather, speak to a JW in real life

so I'll have to rely on news and documentaries for my information.

You do that👍 I can see it's working out nicely for you

Hmmm because I'm really going to get neutral, unbiased information from the JW website?

Again, do you really think all the (thousands and thousands) of victims are lying? For what reason? Come off it.

I'm sorry if you're offended, but no organisation, religious or otherwise is infallible or beyond reproach - thinking that they are is dangerous and indicative of cult like attitudes.

pastypirate · 04/12/2021 10:45

I got one this week. First hand writtten one in this house which is a new build and now 4 years old.
