Apologies if this has been done/ posted about before. I received this letter through the post today- from the Jehovah’s witnesses. With covid I’m assuming it’s how there communicating with people. I was really surprised that it was hand written, must take hours too write those out, price of stamps - I dread too think. Has anybody else received one? No disrespect, I’m very happy with my own faith, it’s gone in the bin.

I got one yesterday it included a drawing of a Joshua tree too.
Filed in the bin.

It's not spreading good news. It's preying on peoples fears and insecurities. If people want to know more they can Google but directly writing to someone could be seen as invasive by some.

Mormons do the same.

I have a friend who had one recently and she said it said that babies died as they were full of sin and it was sent from a 10 year old. I don't believe that's what it said but I believe that how she interpreted it. She had lost a baby to SIDS and it really affected her. She was Mormon and couldn't see the similarities.

LukeDogWalker
My ex is a JW if you write to them formally telling them to sod off they are duty bound never contact you again Grin

The last time I had one of these letters, I emailed the local Kingdom Hall (think that's what it's called) and asked them not to contact me again in any way and to remove my contact details from their mailing list. Not heard from them since.

When they knocked on the door of my previous home (pre-covid) I told them I was a Catholic (nominally true, I was baptised as such but that's as far as it goes) and they couldn't run away fast enough muttering, well, at least you have some sort of faith! Although alternatively t might have been 'unclean, unclean'!

Not yet, but it’ll be returned to sender wrapped round something very heavy if I do.

Went to my late ex's house with DD this week, for regular checks while the DC decide what they're doing with their inheritance. Found a letter on the mat, and I'm surprised as plenty of people know he's passed away

Babdoc · 03/12/2021 20:33

intheopinionofourexpert, when we have a child patient of JW parents, we simply apply for a court order to allow us to administer a blood transfusion if it is clinically essential. No UK doctor would allow a child to die for lack of blood products, whatever its parents' religious beliefs.
I can only recall one case in the medical journals of a JW child who had to be adopted post operatively as the parents refused to take him back, saying he was now a child of Satan.
Otherwise I think parents are usually relieved when the decision is taken out of their hands.
I know anaesthetic colleagues who have successfully persuaded adult JWs to receive blood for open heart surgery, too.
As a Christian myself, but not a JW, I cannot believe a loving God would want anyone to die prematurely when a willing blood donor is freely available. I suspect they are misinterpreting the Old Testament injunction not to take blood. Which obviously refers to killing and injuring, not transfusions, which were thousands of years in the future at that point!

Hiya, resident Mormon checking in :)

I just wanted to emphasise that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that all children who pass away before the age of accountability (8 years old) are automatically saved and reside with God.

We also believe that we will have the chance to be with them again after this life - that death is not the end. It breaks my heart that people are told otherwise, because I can't imagine a sadder thought. I've lost a child and I can't wait to hold her in my arms in the next life 💕

DismantledKing · 03/12/2021 20:38

You've actually managed to twist what I've said as I've the letters are done with good intentions and can be put in the bin if people are not interested. Some are speaking as if the letters are inviting them to join a cult.

They are a cult. Ask anyone that’s tried to leave.

Saladcreamormayo · 03/12/2021 20:45

yes I received one a couple of weeks back, I binned it. I was very impressed though that they had taken the time to write it by hand whilst probably knowing it was going to end up in the bin. was nice to receive a hand written letter as I haven't received one in years it's quite a thing of the past these days isn't it which is a shame.

santasmuma · 03/12/2021 20:56

I find that depressing, not impressive.

BarefootHippieChick · 03/12/2021 20:58

Yes we had one. My husband took the trouble to email explaining why he doesn't agree with religion being forced on people. He had an apologetic reply and our address taken off their list 😆

EishetChayil · 03/12/2021 20:59

I'm embarrassed for them. Such desperation. I'm glad I come from a religion that doesn't try to persuade others to join!!

@DismantledKing It really isn't a cult. I don't have to ask anyone as I've had friends who have easily left. Some have come back, some haven't. Both my mum and my auntie left. Everyone has free will and are able to leave/come back easily. Just depends on what choices one has made and they may bring along the feeling of guilt/no longer being in contact with friends or family members who are JW
feelsobadfeltsogood · 03/12/2021 21:03

We've had 3-4 during lockdown so I posted them all back without any stamp so they'd have to pay the postage

If they come to the front door they get told to go

I find it hugely invasive

DismantledKing · 03/12/2021 21:06

21dolly

I suppose a member of a cult wouldn’t describe it as such. Not surprising really. Other people think otherwise.

Geordieoldgirl · 03/12/2021 21:07

We got one very recently for the first time. It was not intrusive, I just felt a pang for the sincere person who took the time and trouble to write to us, as there is no chance that any of us are going to respond or get involved with that religion.

NanTheWiser · 03/12/2021 21:08

Yes, I had one last week. Binned.

BarefootHippieChick · 03/12/2021 21:10

Me too. If people want to find religion they can seek it out themselves, the rest of us don't want letters and door knockers thanks.

depremesnil · 03/12/2021 21:10

If the shun people who have left that sounds like a cult to me.

Bluntness100 · 03/12/2021 21:15

I had these, followed up by a visit by two women. I am always polite to people and make conversation but they then came back another twice. I then realised they thought they were converting me, so I had to be blunt with them and told them as much as they were lovely snd I enjoyed the theological discussions, I was never ever ever going to be a Jehovah’s Witness, so if they thought that’s what they were achieving they were very mistaken and wasting their time. I was just being nice.

They looked shocked and left, and never retuned. My fault I guess for being nice to them.

Everyone's a winner!

I don't think they give two hoots whether you put it in the bin, or become overcome with piety and devote your life to the Lord. Either way they get credit from Jesus. They're just trying to clock up enough letters to get into heaven. It's like saving up coupons from the Daily Express for a coach trip to Mablethorpe.

milly74 · 03/12/2021 21:31

yes we got one, straight in the bin

sarahc336 · 03/12/2021 21:31

Yes I got one last week that was also hand written. I too put mine in the bin 😬 x
