This is what you get for stealing 😁

I just finished my Xmas gift shopping online. One of the things I bought was a pack of American chocolate. I resisted temptation for about half an hour then nicked a pack of Hershey kisses.

They taste like vomit. Actual vomit. And I can't get the taste out of my mouth. I've swished with mouthwash, everything. It's like the smell has set up home in my nostrils and the taste at the back of my throat.

Still, I suppose it's a good thing I will not now be giving my son the gift of vomit for Christmas.

I feel so sorry for Americans I want to send the poor sods emergency parcels of actual chocolate.

Right after I gargle with a cup of skunk spray to freshen my mouth.

I'm suffering with covid loss of taste and everything tastes disgusting, soapy metal that coats your mouth.
I wonder if Hershey kisses would reinstate my taste reaction??

chesirecat99 · 03/12/2021 17:43

Tesco sell a paper cup filled with mixed American sweets for a couple of pounds (in their world foods aisle). Some of them are delicious, some of them disgusting. I bought some for my DC one Christmas and they loved trying out the sweets they had heard of from films - not just the nice ones but for the Russian roulette element Grin Maybe your DS would like that, OP?

modgepodge · 03/12/2021 17:47

I tried Hershey once almost 20 years ago and everyone was raving about how good they were, I thought they were teasing me as I honestly could not taste anything except vomit. I also wonder if certain people have a certain gene or something as it’s a very distinctive taste and people do seem to either love it or hate it.

Oh god, I tried them once when delayed at a US airport. They really compounded my misery. I still can't believe the Americans really eat such awful stuff.

santabetterwashhishands · 03/12/2021 17:55

Hershey's stuff all taste like vomit 🤮

Bobsyer · 03/12/2021 17:56

@CaputApriDefero

Hershey's kisses DO TASTE LIKE VOMIT!! But some people love them. I can't fathom it. I wonder if people who think coriander tastes soapy (me) think Hershey's taste vile, because it must be something to do with some kind of taste gene if some people think they're delightful.
I think it's just because they're used to it over there!

I have a morbid desire to try it. I won't though.

Justleaveitblankthen · 03/12/2021 18:00

I have never tried it, but if they are as bad as Orios, I never will.

Why is American confectionery oftern so lame?
Even the peanut butter comes nowhere near the decent (non palm-oil ) versions available over here.

ClaudiaWankleman · 03/12/2021 18:00

As a bit of a warning, candy corn is another American sweet that looks appealing and tastes awful.

You think it's going to be the texture of a milk bottle and the flavour of a foamy banana.

In reality its the texture of a liquorice allsort and the flavour is so insipid its unnameable.

grapewine · 03/12/2021 18:02

They are so awful.

BasiliskStare · 03/12/2021 18:07

@Fatgalslim - I do not like chocolate - not any chocolate let alone US chocolate - but parma violets - what a blast from the past - Thank you for reminding me

But why as a thank you do people always buy chocolate - I hate the stuff. I don't like cake - I do not have a sweet tooth - not to be smug - give me cheese & I could pretty much eat half my own body weight in it.
Grin

noodlezoodle · 03/12/2021 18:47

There is some lovely chocolate in the US (like Ghirardelli and Guittard) but the mass produced stuff is utterly disgusting. I was very excited when Cadburys started becoming widely available, until I tried it and realised that that is now also disgusting :-(

Divebar2021 · 03/12/2021 19:03

Come on OP, American chocolate is famously dire. I was at college in the US back in the day and my mum would send me big bars of Galaxy chocolate.( not posh I know) u There would be a little gaggle of girls waiting for me to open it. Sadly the Americans have got hold of Cadbury’s so we can look forward to more tinkering with our beloved brands.

itssquidstella · 03/12/2021 19:07

Even Americans don't like candy corn!

ThreeWiseBuddhas · 03/12/2021 19:09

My DD calls them Hershey Shitses, as they do in fact, taste like turds

Shodan · 03/12/2021 19:14

I always think that they don't taste of vomit, exactly, but that first drink of water you have after you've vomited. That always has that sweet yet acrid vomitty aftertaste.

And yet- I know someone who actually likes them. He's quite sane in all other areas, but obviously has a little breakout of insanity where these little poo parcels are concerned.

I have to say though OP- you're quite, quite wrong about Parma Violets. They're nearly as gross as Hershey's. Like eating perfume.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/12/2021 19:18

We didn't used to buy the Hershey chocolate when we lived in the US, but the Hershey cookies and cream chocolate tasted nice. We bought Dove chocolates instead, tasted more normal. I think they are Galaxy here in the UK

I love coriander but Hershey's definitely tastes like vomit to me
Rochim20 · 03/12/2021 20:09

There was a woman where I used to work who had moved to the UK from the US. She claimed that US chocolate was amazing and that Tootsie rolls were the food of the gods. To prove her claim, she brought a tub of Tootsie rolls into work. She took a mostly full tub of them back home that evening. They were rank.

TinselToesCandyCane · 03/12/2021 20:10

They are disgusting

Do you still have? Most Americans only use them for these cookies

What? I like them. I have been to Hershey factory in Hershey, PA. I even got a certificate there in chocolate tasting, accredited as the University of Hershey. Grin
I love all chocolate which is problematic.

TSSDNCOP · 03/12/2021 20:42

I tried them and can still summon the awfulness 35 years later. It also coats your teeth so you can't shift the fuckers and because they are impervious to hot and cold drinks you cant dissolve them.

I also loathe coriander, bananas and Earl grey tea, which triggers my gag reflex even to smell it.

No one could ever accuse me of being a food avoider, but these things are in my room 101.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 03/12/2021 20:47

It's such a revolting "chocolate". Goodness knows what they actually make it with!!

Go to the Cailler chocolate factory in Switzerland. They have an all you can eat tasting room. It’s creamy chocolatey amazingness.

American confectionery I’m general is dire. Corn bread (is supposed to be savoury but was actually like cake) is the most disgusting closely followed by Twinkies. All Hershey’s tastes like vomit.

Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups however …

IncompleteSenten · 03/12/2021 20:57

I threw them in the food caddy, mango

Mind you, I could always fish them out, shake off the potato peelings and dinner scraps and bake them into cookies because I genuinely doubt it would be possible for them to taste any the worse for it 😂
