I can’t stop thinking about hot chocolate after all those threads this week, so I bought one from Starbucks when I was passing earlier and it was a bit crap. So I want to hear your recipes for the best home-made hot chocolate & what I need to add to it to make it amazing.

Parameters:
I don’t have a slow cooker
I drink alcohol
I don’t care about calories
It’ll just be for me - DC too young and DH doesn’t like it

Spanish hot chocolate.

christmaskittenincoming · 03/12/2021 14:50

Oh I've not seen the other threads... hanging on here for some ideas

Had the Costa mint hot chocolate the other day and was really disappointed

StarlightStarlight · 03/12/2021 14:54

You need to just make the jump to a velvetiser

Full fat milk. I like Bournville cocoa and then add sugar to taste.

JuneFromBethesda · 03/12/2021 14:58

I had a Hotel Chocolat salted caramel hot chocolate from an HC pop-up stall the other day. My god, it’s divine. The perfect balance of creaminess, sweetness with the slightest tang of salt.

I bought some HC salted caramel drinking chocolate to make at home as a result but haven’t dared try it yet, I’m afraid once I start I won’t be able to stop myself.

TheSpiral · 03/12/2021 14:59

My favourite is chilli hot chocolate. I don’t do anything else to it. Just chilli chocolate powder from Whittards, with hot milk.

Wallabyone · 03/12/2021 15:01

We have a velvetiser. We use M&S drinking chocolate in it, and it's delicious-it's cocoa with sugar mixed in. Serve with M&S squirty cream and optional marshmallows!

TheLovelinessOfBaublyDemons · 03/12/2021 15:03

I recreate the Sainsbury's café luxury caramel hot chocolate. Caramel syrup, whipped cream on top with more caramel syrup and gold stars.

IGotHam · 03/12/2021 15:05

Make your own. I find all commercial hot chocolate to be either too sweet or not rich enough. I grate a dark chocolate bar into milk and add a little cornflour and cocoa powder with a little sugar to taste. I sometimes add vanilla if I'm feeling fancy.

@BleuJay

Spanish hot chocolate.
This.

The one I like most is from Mercadona, which is a nondescript Spanish supermarket, maybe like Morrisons? The posh looking Spanish ones are too sweet, but this is just like a thin chocolate custard.

Most cafe hot chocolates aren't really that hot so spoil my fantasy of sitting there sipping my hot chocolate and relaxing.

ChristmasFluff · 03/12/2021 15:13

My sister got me a dolce gusto coffee machine, and their choccocinos are so good my dentist noticed the difference in my teeth. :-(

They are my weekly treat now.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2021 15:13

But if you were making your own, I'd use full fat milk, grated dark chocolate (the 50% cocoa 30 p bars are absolutely fine) and a little sugar, I use half a teaspoon. Either use a milk frother, a pan or a microwave and just heat and mix together.

Add brandy, Baileys, squirty cream, whipped or normal cream, flakes, marshmallows as you wish.

Triffid1 · 03/12/2021 15:20

I have been using green and black's hot chocolate for years. Prepare it with milk. Add cream or baileys if you want it to be extra delicious and decadent.

NotMyCat · 03/12/2021 15:29

Agree with Spanish hot chocolate

NotMyCat · 03/12/2021 15:30

This is the one I like, cheaper on eBay though!

Sorry it isn't homemade but the costa Terry's chocolate orange hot chocolate is amazing! If anyone knows a homemade version please let me know 🤣

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2021 15:36

That's the one I thought was far too sweet.
NotMyCat · 03/12/2021 15:40

@BarbaraofSeville ahh! I do have a sweet tooth Grin
I much prefer the Spanish ones as they're thicker rather than the standard hot chocolate, need to try some other brands

UniBallEye · 03/12/2021 16:49

Velevtizer here too and today I had a classic milk chocolate in the special hotel cohocolat cup and it made me think of MN and all the hot chocolate angst Grin

In the interest of science mine was definitely hot enough, it was thick and creamy with a definite hit of chocolate and it was DELICIOUS!

MissyB1 · 03/12/2021 17:02

I just use a cheap battery milk frother from Lakeland, think it was a tenner. Don’t need a velvetiser! M&S hot chocolate with full fat milk, grate plain chocolate on top.

Etherealhedgehog · 03/12/2021 17:16

Just cocoa powder in full fat milk. One tea spoon of sugar and then marshmallows on top. The hot chocolate itself is not that sweet and the contrast with the marshmallows is perfect

Bitofachinwag · 03/12/2021 17:19

Spoon of cocoa powder in a cup, two spoons of sugar. Mix with hot milk and stir. No need to make it complicated!

ExquisitelyDecorated · 03/12/2021 17:21

Sloanes Dark Chocolate from Waitrose is my favourite by far, lovely dark and rich. I don't like any added flavours so it's no to mint, chocolate, caramel, Baileys etc here.

nancybotwinbloom · 03/12/2021 17:23

Has anyone tried the fry's hot chocolate? I have some just not feeling like it yet.

CampervanQueen · 03/12/2021 17:25

This but 1 teaspoon sugar as I don't have a terribly sweet tooth
