Social media posts that make you cringe

Saw one the other day-

‘Guys, where can I donate food to? I really want to help’ To me it just smacks of virtue signalling and wanting praise. My view is that if they’ve got FB then presumably they could Google this and have they never seen the food bank bins at the door of every supermarket?

Phew rant over!

Grief thief posts are the worst

Absolutely this .

I was in an accident that was reported on the news, loads of people that I hadn’t been in contact with for years all commenting about it , all clambering over each other saying ‘OMG this is one of my best friends’ etc . I replied to some of them saying I actually had no idea who they were - I blame the pain relief I was on Wink

ufucoffee · 04/12/2021 10:42

People going on a trip who post 'not long until we're there (inserts name of person they are travelling with). Say it to their face

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 04/12/2021 10:56

I have a Facebook friend who goes to the same place for a break several times a year - not abroad, just a few miles down the coast. Nothing wrong with that - there are places that are just so comforting and familiar. But every single time, we are treated to photos of every nook and cranny of their hotel/B&B room, endless photos of the sights and dozens of pictures of their breakfast, dinner and giant desserts. They aren't even in most of the photos themselves.

SofaKingKnotBovvered · 04/12/2021 11:06

@Salahdor I agree and people posting about tracing their long lost relative, people respond and they have no idea who they are really talking to

Vapeyvapevape · 04/12/2021 11:09

I joined the Mrs Hinch cleaning group (and quickly unjoined ) so many people asking how to clean a bath or a (normal ) tiled floor- seriously? You have no idea how to do this? You can’t look in the supermarket for a product that says Bath cleaner ?

DickMabutt73962 · 04/12/2021 11:09

@ufucoffee

In any thread about mask wearing 'I've never stopped wearing a mask in shops'. So?
I had one tell me in person when I didn't ask. 'Good for you' was my reply.
loislovesstewie · 04/12/2021 11:24

Are you all my friends/relations?

Vapeyvapevape · 04/12/2021 11:25

Also 'I've had such a terrible week but I'm back' captions alongside a highly staged, heavily filtered selfie

So tempting to answer ’ I hadn’t noticed you’d gone’

flinginflangin · 04/12/2021 11:33

I hate posts where people are at an airport and posts a cheesy photo of their passport and a pint saying things like 'we are on our way!' It's a fantastic way to advertise to a potential burglar your home is empty for a week or so.

DickMabutt73962 · 04/12/2021 11:40

Oh god I've just opened Instagram to a photo of a friend crying. I'd heard this was a trend amongst Gen Z but we are on the upper end of Millennial Confused

Why?

You see plenty of that on MN too.

It's alarming how quickly the armchair sleuths pop up offering to use their accounts to carry out searches for a random anonymous person.

Salahdor · 04/12/2021 13:38

Percythewitch - absolutely.

The looking for an adopted person posts that have been shared thousands of times - with no appreciation of how that person may feel about thousands / millions of people potentially knowing they were adopted before they do!

Also the (mostly American) Facebook photos of kids with a sign around their neck saying things like 500 days in care but today I found my forever family”!!!!! Let’s see if those kids thank the poster /sharers in years to come.

Massive attention seeking.

Only if it's set to public
carlyswirly · 04/12/2021 14:19

I'm currently enjoying the playing out of a very public, over sharey and ill advised engagement on Facebook.

They are astral twins apparently. Met a few weeks ago. Even the proposal was on social media. It's brilliant.

MrsDThomas · 04/12/2021 16:38

I loathe those post with “my family is my world/best husband” etc. i have one FB (not really a friend) who posts them and they scream “dh doing the dirty” to me. He has form.

And positivity shit. Reach for the sky/dream big/it will happen.

No it won’t.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/12/2021 16:49

@Levithian

"Today I was feeling down, and my eighteen month old came up to me, hugged me and said, "Mummy, remember than even when your soul is shrouded in the mists of unhappiness, a fresh breeze will come and you will once again see the sun." So blessed to have my wise little man."
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮!

Yes, also see competitive posts on school portals.

"Genevieve (3) was so excited to tell me about what she learnt today, she spent all dinner time (broccoli and salmon) naming all the planets and moons in the solar system, then she recited pi to 100 places. So proud"

Gen span around the room pretending to be a planet*

DickMabutt73962 · 04/12/2021 17:03

@Itsnotdeep

You know you don't actually have to look at any social media?

It's really not worth getting worked up about - it keeps people happy, so what?

There's always one! Impressed it took so long
sqirrelfriends · 04/12/2021 17:08

There's one lady on the local Facebook page who exclusively virtue signals:

"The chuggers are out in force today, we signed up for a direct debit, I suggest you do to"

"We just donated a weeks shopping to the food bank, it such a good cause if you have the money to give them please do" (includes pictures of shopping)

Etc etc.

She seems lovely but really?!

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/12/2021 17:46

Twitters as bad. I heard ndn tell his kid he’s the wrong colour to be a footballer but on twitter he’s woke as fuck and racism is WRONG.

Pythian · 04/12/2021 18:22

Relentless negativity is almost as bad as the "inspirational" memes and #bekind stuff. I have a friend who can't seem to go a day without posting something about how her hospital transport was late, or she saw somebody not wearing a mask in Asda, or her boiler is on the blink again, etc etc. And the same two or three people always comment on her posts to assure her that she's a wonderful person who doesn't deserve to have so much bad luck, and "stay strong, you've got this 💪". But she doesn't have worse luck than anyone else, it's the same random shit that happens to everyone all the time, but we don't catalogue it all on FB.

Enzbear · 04/12/2021 18:41

Photos with filters
When the same person checks in to the same pub or cafe every single week
Anything that starts with 'bet you won't repost'.
Not now I won't!
Too many photos. I am happy to look at the first 6 of their 93 photos.

OrinoccoFlew · 04/12/2021 19:49

The “ Let’s see who posts this… I know who won’t.”
The check ins at the doctors or the hospital
Any “feeling blessed” shite
Any “Happy Birthday to my great great great grandad who would have been 450 today” They can’t see it.
Any gushing crap about partners when you know they fight like cat and dog.
