Jobs that you don't know anyone who do them

Inspired by other threads. Are there any jobs where you don't actually know anyone in real life, even a friend of a friend or someone you've heard of, who does it?

For example I don't know anyone who is a postman (apart from the ones I've had who come all lovely and cheery, drop the post and go).I have genuinely no idea what the job is really like or how people find it. Don't know anyone in my personal life who does it!

Anyone got anything else like that?

I don't know any truck drivers, they could have had an amazing pay rise this year. However I can only imagine the conditions must be awful.

My neighour is a postie (so is his son, gave us a delivery yesterday).

shinynewapple21 · 02/12/2021 22:07

Yeah - probably most jobs to be honest . I do know a few post people though!

There are so many jobs out there…of course there’ll be many that no one has any connections with.

Coldenoughforyou · 02/12/2021 22:32

I know two posties but I was thinking the other day, I don’t know a single nurse.

flamebuoy · 02/12/2021 22:33

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/12/2021 22:33

I do know
A bagpiper (former Scots Guard)
A methodist minister
A butler in the buff.
An award winning children's author
A sewerage operative
A couple of actors/extras.
A window cleaner.

TuftyMarmoset · 02/12/2021 22:34

I think the husband of someone I went to school with is a postie.

I don’t know any anaesthetists, dog walkers or lighthouse keepers (is that still a job?)

WingBingo · 02/12/2021 22:36

I don’t know any flautists

Birdsnesting · 02/12/2021 22:37

The problem is that in many cases the jobs you don’t know anyone who does are jobs you just won’t have even heard of — I remember arriving at university from a background of mechanics, labourers, secretaries, childminders and lorry drivers etc and meeting not only people planning to become dentists, teachers and lawyers, but stuff I never even knew existed, like opera directors and museum curators.

Exhausteddog · 02/12/2021 22:46

DH cousin is a postman.
I know people with a wide range of jobs and some who despite them explaining in detail I have no idea what they actually do!Blush

MakkaPakkas · 02/12/2021 23:11

I don't know anyone who does domestic cleaning aside from people who have cleaned my house. I have been a cleaner in a pub myself (a job with a crew and it was fine, I quite enjoyed it), but never a domestic cleaner and I always wonder if they hate it, if it's lonely, if they hate me for being such a messy bastard etc... 😂

purpleme12 · 02/12/2021 23:14

I don't understand this thread?
Surely there are lots of jobs that people won't know anyone in them

MiddleParking · 02/12/2021 23:19

I feel like I have acquaintances in all sorts of jobs, until I’m looking for someone to sign a passport then I forget everyone I’ve ever met. I know lots of postpeople though. They seem to be married to each other a lot, and spent lots of time in the pub because they finish work so early.

DriftingBlue · 02/12/2021 23:23

Most jobs. Almost everyone I know is a teacher, a professor, a doctor, or works in an office in some capacity. The office workers, like me, all have very different careers, but in reality, our day to day existence is probably relatively similar compared to someone who works in construction or on a submarine. I have someone in my Facebook circle who works in a very different field and I do find the little glimpses into his career fascinating.
