How many coats do your kids have?

Dd4 has one winter coat we bought over a month ago. One rain coat. One denim jacket. One hoody type jacket. I'm thinking this is enough. However this morning she said her friend said how come you wear the same coat everyday?

I told her it was her winter coat and that's why she needed to wear it. What would you do? Get another jacket type of coat? How many coats do kids need in the winter?

DS1 has 1 winter coat, a slightly too small rain jacket, and an all in 1 rain suit.

DS2 has about 4 or 5 that fit him (only 1 bought new, the rest are all DS1s at various ages).

Camomila · 02/12/2021 10:05

(In general I tend to have 2, a good/expensive one worn every day and a cheap spare for when I've had to put the good coat through the washing machine)

RobinPenguins · 02/12/2021 10:07

4 year old has:

Winter padded/hooded/waterproof warm coat.
Smart wool winter coat.
Thinner rain jacket.
Hoodie.

Which tbh is more than me.

DD (2.5) has a warm thick waterproof winter coat, a thinner waterproof jacket, and a few hoodies but they’re thinner and worn as jumpers under her coat when it’s cold so not really winter outerwear.

grey12 · 02/12/2021 10:08

Yep, one winter coat ;)

MIL kept saying last year that DD1 (who was in reception) should have a coat for school and one for the weekend 🤷🏻‍♀️ so the school coat doesn't get a little bit of mud from a weekend day at the park. Tbh I don't care very much about it.... should I?!

firstimemamma · 02/12/2021 10:08

3 year old has 2 coats. One thick winter one from sainsburys. Another second hand puffa coat for getting muddy, forest school etc.

purpleme12 · 02/12/2021 10:09

2 coats, one raincoat that's got fluff inside (so for the colder weather but not too cold weather) and one thin raincoat to keep dry in Warner weather.
But we have had years where she's just had one coat and I see nothing wrong with that
I only really bought the second one cos we loved it so much

LakeShoreD · 02/12/2021 10:09

My 4YO has a school branded winter coat, a school branded rain coat, a ski jacket, an everyday light down jacket, a non school raincoat plus a denim jacket and a couple of thick hoodies but I wouldn’t count those at coats. Excluding the school uniform ones as it would be a bit harsh to make her wear those outside of school, I would never buy more than one coat that serves the same purpose.

MyDcAreMarvel · 02/12/2021 10:10

Two winter coats ( but one is last years as a spare or for getting really muddy) and a summer coat. Girls sometimes have denim jackets , I don’t buy them in every size. No raincoats as their winter coats are waterproof.

HerRoyalHappiness · 02/12/2021 10:11

Mine have 1 winter coat, 1 thinner rain coat, a hoody and DD has a denim jacket too.

WorriedMillie · 02/12/2021 10:12

DD has a practical winter coat, but she still just about fits into last years, so we’ve kept that as a stables coat
She also has a “posh coat”
And a Hatley rain coat
She wears the first coat every day for school, i didn’t realise kids had more than one coat to rotate 😳

sunlovingcriminal · 02/12/2021 10:13

My 11 yo ds- 1 x winter coat, 1 x rain coat.

Same coat for school as for home.
Given that they'll get one maybe two years of wear at the rate they grow, I refuse to buy and waste money and resources on excessive coats! But I buy well made stuff. Buy cheap, buy twice and all that.

While I agree with the saying about many things, I've never had a coat get worn out on my child before its time. We've been able to give most of our coats away to her cousin even after she's grown out of them. Only reason some of them haven't is cos of stains
Marmite27 · 02/12/2021 10:18

DC1 has:

2x 3 in one mountain warehouse coats (kept getting soaked in reception so needed to be able to alternate)
1x Aldi ski jacket
1x Lidl lined waterproof jacket (and lined waterproof bottoms)
1x Lidl unlined waterproof jacket (and unlined waterproof bottoms)
1x smart navy rain coat
1x smart khaki coat with a fur trimmed hood.

DC2 has:
1x Aldi ski jacket
1x Lidl lined waterproof jacket (and lined waterproof bottoms)
1x Lidl unlined waterproof jacket (and unlined waterproof bottoms)
1x pink paw patrol raincoat
1x navy paw patrol coat with a fur trimmed hood.

We tend to have two winter coats, one for home and one for school although it usually transpires as one filthy and in the wash and the other being worn. Ds is 5. No idea how he gets so filthy tbh.

He's got a thinner rain jacket also but I think that's it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/12/2021 10:21

A winter coat
A spring/autumn coat
A light summer jacket

Ski jacket (for skiing)
3-in-1 proper waterproof coat (for camping, hiking, canoeing etc)

So yes, they will wear the same coat most days due to the weather being the same as the day before.

Helpstopthepain · 02/12/2021 10:26

1 winter
1 lightweight

But he’s 15 and doesn’t wear them Grin

lebkuchenforxmas · 02/12/2021 10:28

12yo DD has a thin summer rain coat, a lightweight puffa type jacket which lives shoved in the bottom of her school bag other than in extreme weather conditions and then what I like to think of as a proper winter coat which I hope will make whoever buys it in a charity shop in pristine condition at some point in the future very happy!

InTheLabyrinth · 02/12/2021 10:29

One thick winter coat.
One waterproof light summer jacket.
We use hoodies as jumpers, not coats, but DS1 has 2. DS2 has none.

And when DS1 grows out of his coat, we keep it as an emergency one - in a push, either child could wear it. Then they are all charity shopped, as DS2 has different taste and shape to DS1, and doesn't actually look good in his hand-me-downs.

usernotfound0000 · 02/12/2021 10:30

DD age 3 has one thick winter coat, one slightly thinner one for Autumn/Spring, one rain coat and a puddle suit. Having more than 1 winter coat isn't necessary, although in the past I have had a cheap second hand one for nursery use, but she doesn't get too messy these days.

I was just looking at pictures the other day and realised one of my children had the same Asda winter coat for 3 years!!!! Confused and she's turning 4 now! Yes, it was a little bit on the tight side by the end of winter last year.....
RosieRoww · 02/12/2021 10:34

Oh gosh quite a lot.☺️
My dd have:

  • 2 winter jackets
  • 1 winter fur coat
  • 1 jacket that she wears on the garden , or while playing in the street with her pals
  • 2 body vests , one nicer, and one more for playing in the garden

My dd:

  • two winter jackets
  • one football windbreaker jacket
  • one outdoor jacket for playground etc
  • 1 one body vest which I think will need to be replaced soon.
Angel2702 · 02/12/2021 10:34

Currently 0 only a thin rain jacket. First time ever bought an expensive coat as she is now in women’s sizes thought would be worth it for good quality wind proof as it would last. We usually buy two cheaper coats one for home and one for school. Due to the cost we only bought one this year. It has gone missing from her locker at primary school as they aren’t locked. I’m so angry about it, it was a lot of money and not something we can afford to replace. She’s currently having to wear a borrowed coat.
