How many coats do your kids have?

Dd4 has one winter coat we bought over a month ago. One rain coat. One denim jacket. One hoody type jacket. I'm thinking this is enough. However this morning she said her friend said how come you wear the same coat everyday?

I told her it was her winter coat and that's why she needed to wear it. What would you do? Get another jacket type of coat? How many coats do kids need in the winter?

DS has 1 thinner waterproof coat and a very thick padded parka as well as multiple hoodies which I don't count as coats

DD has a fleece lined waterproof coat, a fake fur coat and a denim jacket plus multiple hoodies. I'm about to buy her a thicker coat now it's getting colder but tbh by the time she has a vest, shirt, cardigan, skirt, thick tights and hat, scarf and gloves on for school she'll probably continue to wear the fleece lined waterproof on school days or she'll overheat.

Both also have pack-a-mac things that they wear over a base layer with or without a fleece for when we go out walking and hiking all year round

Bimblybomeyelash · 02/12/2021 11:55

Age 5. 1 winter coat and 1 pack a Mac. The winter coat is from last year and I reckon it will do her for next year too!!

bluesky45 · 02/12/2021 11:59

Mine are 4 and 2, they have a nice winter coat that my mum bought them, both a little big, which they wear for non-nursery days.
On nursery days, the 4 year old wears last year's coat that still fits and the 2 year old wears a hand me down from the 4 year old.
Next year, they will still fit their nice new coats so will wear those for school/nursery and they may or may not have a nice new coat for other days.
They both also have a thin rain coat but that is more for spring/summer. And they both have a few (maybe 3) hooded jackets, but I wouldn't stay they were coats.
So yeah, mine wear the same coat for nursery every day.
I have a winter 2 in 1 coat for every day, a leather jacket and a smart wool coat both used for dressing up type days (so rarely!)

We have 2 winter coats, 1 for nursery and 1 for home. Tbh, we only have two because by the end of a week at nursery its filthy and in the wash over the weekend.

As an adult I have 1 winter coat, like you say it serves a purpose so I see no need for more than 1

toptomatoes · 02/12/2021 12:03

All 3 of mine have one thick winter coat. Youngest technically has two at the moment because I bought her a new one in the next size on offer and she’s wearing that mostly but the old one is still useable. They usually get two winters out of their coats. Two of three have a waterproof jacket; the other has a thin jacket that I don’t think is waterproof but is a teenager and doesn’t wear it anyway. Two oldest also have a couple of thin sports jackets for football and some hoodies that are worn as jumpers rather than outerwear. Youngest has a denim jacket, a few spare coats and jackets that were hand-me-downs from friends, and a few hoodies but they are again used as jumpers.

Em8725 · 02/12/2021 12:03

DD 5 has one winter coat, and a variety of fleeces/thin jackets that couldn’t be worn in the freezing cold. She also has one that is slightly too small from last year that I’ve kept as a spare in case hers needs an emergency wash.

DS 3 had 2 coats, but one is now too small and got sicked on, and I can’t get the smell out so that ones had to go in the bin. So he has 1 coat, and also uses DD’s spare if his needs an emergency wash. He has 1 thin raincoat or hoodies.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/12/2021 12:06

2 each. Heavy winter coat and light jacket.
I pass them on yearly after a growth spurt.

BiBabbles · 02/12/2021 12:10

My DD2 had the opposite - some of her peers were asking why she's wearing different coats (she lost her coat and had to borrow for a few days so in the space of the week, she had worn 4 or so coats).

My kids all have one proper coat plus some fleeces. We don't really have room to store a multiple coats per person at the sizes they are now. When they were little, like 5 and under, we often had 2-3+ coats if only because we were given them from others as they can last a while.

maofteens · 02/12/2021 12:33

My daughter has one thick coat, a rain jacket, three hoodies, a puffer jackets she's had for four years, and a thinner padded jacket she's had for three. She's 16 hasn't grown for years and only the coat was bought this year.
Her friend's crazy - I bet the vast majority of kids have just one winter coat.

FatBettyintheCoop · 02/12/2021 12:44

DS is 12 and has one padded winter coat and one pair of shoes and a pair of wellies that need replacing.
I don't get buying excessive clothes for kids that they'll grow out of. Confused

Cam2020 · 02/12/2021 12:51

Two winter coats (for when the other one needs washing), puddlesuit, rain jacket, mac and denim jacket.

DontTellThemYourNamePike · 02/12/2021 12:55

DS1(13)
1 warm, waterproof winter coat which he never wears (wish it fitted me!)
1 lightweight, not very warm puffer jacket which he wore all last winter, in freezing temperatures, despite ownership of above
Lightweight zip up jacket which gets an airing once in a blue moon

DS2(9)
1 warm, waterproof winter coat, which I can't prise off him, even when the weather is mild
1 winter coat which used to belong to his brother and he 'wouldn't be seen dead in'
an assortment of anorak type coats, of varying thicknesses, which also used to belong to his brother and which he 'wouldn't be seen dead in'

Moral of the story in our house - have as many coats as you like but your child will only wear oneGrinGrin

DockOTheBay · 02/12/2021 12:57

My 5 year old has 2 winter coats because she often gets muddy so I can wash one and she can wear the other one. She also has a couple of raincoats and various hoodys/jumpers/ fleeces.

Most kids i know wear the same coat or maybe 1 of 2 every day

reluctantbrit · 02/12/2021 12:58

Always two of winter/waterproof ones. But DD is a Scout and rides so weekends or even weeknights are often spend outdoors or mucking out stables so I can't rely on the coat being dry and clean on Sunday evening.

At least with adult sizes she is not outgrowing them each year anymore.

She also has a demin jacket and a other "fashion" one she got as a present in Summer.

ParkheadParadise · 02/12/2021 13:02

Dd(5)
Has 3 padded winter coats.
2 dressy coats
2 raincoat
2 playing out coats.
Several hoodies and gilets.
I'm lucky my niece's dd is a year older so I get all her coats for dd.

Pegasussnail · 02/12/2021 13:06

One puffer sleeveless each and one raincoat.
I was sick of tidying away too much.

I would tell your daughter to say that it is her favourite coat. The other child is very observant to say the least Grin

isittheholidaysyet · 02/12/2021 13:24

Mine have usually just had one, in school uniform colour, and a pack-away waterproof jacket.
Sometimes, if we have been given 2nd hand coats they will be used in an emergency or for playing in mud.

Currently:
DS(16) has a big winter coat and a waterproof.
DS(14) has a puffer jacket (doesnt wear it) and a pack-away waterproof.
DS(12) has a lightweight softshell jacket, (which he wears solidly, but won't wear a jumper!) and a pack-away waterproof.
DD(10) winter coat in school colours, a pack-away waterproof, a denim jacket and recently bought a non-school colour, soft-shell jacket in a sale ready for leaving year 6 this year.

00100001 · 02/12/2021 13:25

DS17

1 winter coat
2 hoodie jackets, 1 thinner, 1 thick
1 lightweight raincoat - pack-a-mac style

Xmasbaby11 · 02/12/2021 13:33

Dd 7 has:

Winter coat , generally worn every day atm
Denim jacket
raincoat
Several hoodies
2 gilets

She gets v cold and often layers them. And half are hand me downs so we wouldn't have bought as many.

Quornflakegirl · 02/12/2021 13:33

My dds, aged 9 both have
A heavy winter coat
A warm anorak
A raincoat
A fleece hoodie
A light spring/autumn jacket

Mamascoven · 02/12/2021 13:51

I have 2 ds's & 1 dd. They all have 1 thick winter coat, 1 thin raincoat, dd has 2 padded jackets and ds's 1 each. I think you see most children in the same winter coats every day at this time of the year!

AliceMck · 02/12/2021 13:52

My house is full of coats, rough calculations probably about 30 plus off the top of my head, that’s winter, summer, walking, gilets, denim, rain shells, leather… I do have 3 DDs though so I hold onto them to pass down. We also get hand-me-downs from older cousins that get put to one side until grown into. Even with all these there is always a point where one of them still needs a new one. I had to buy my 4yo one a couple of weeks ago as she’d grown out her old winter one. I do have a 5-6 one waiting for her but it’s absolutely massive on her so ended up buying a new one.

spiderlight · 02/12/2021 13:54

DS (14) has a warm waterproof winter coat, a lighter-weight jacket, a lightweight waterproof, two denim jackets (one of them mine from the 90s), and approximately 37,000 black hoodies.
