How many coats do your kids have?

Dd4 has one winter coat we bought over a month ago. One rain coat. One denim jacket. One hoody type jacket. I'm thinking this is enough. However this morning she said her friend said how come you wear the same coat everyday?

I told her it was her winter coat and that's why she needed to wear it. What would you do? Get another jacket type of coat? How many coats do kids need in the winter?

7 million. Or that's what it feels like when I put the fucking things away!
1 yard coat for doing the ponies (not our ponies, I'm not rich!)
1 warm puffer coat for layering under-
1 waterproof
1 water resistant warm coat
1 Denim jacket
1 cycling jacket
1 gilet
1 padded jacket thing
X2 children.

Also many many coats that are slightly too big for one child/ too small for the other. It's ridiculous but they do all get used and we pass them on when we're finally done with them!

Surely they need a new coat every year? Do they not grow. I see some kids in the sand coat they've had for 2 years, how do they still fit?

Well my DD is wearing the same coat as last winter because last winter it was a bit too big and this year it fits 🤷🏻‍♀️

4?
One winter coat. Last years winter coat, still fits but snug! Will do as a spare. A smart coat worn for the odd 'special occasion' also on the snug side. Then a lightweight raincoat.

Also a denim jacket and a body warmer. And fleece. Our coat stand is Full.

grey12 · 02/12/2021 10:46

Same as @RobinPenguins if it fits perfectly it won't even last the whole winter

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 02/12/2021 10:48

A padded jacket and a bloody good waterproof each. Pair them up when it is really cold.

We do have a selection of random ski jackets and things in different sizes floating around from hand me downs which effectively means that the smallest child has around 29 coats to choose from.

But basically they need something waterproof and something warm. The most flexible and cost effective way of doing this is separates that you can layer up and a padded jacket and waterproof is far more flexible and gets far more use than a zip in fleece affair. The padded jacket can be fairly cheap mountain warehouse type and then I spend more on the waterproof as well be used all year round and I want it to actually be waterproof. Outdoorsy family, scouts and all that gubbins.

Both girls have softshell jacket for spring/autumn and a packable rain coat.

DD1 has two winter coats, one for school, one for 'life'. This is largely because she lives in full colour and school mandate a black coat which is fucking stupid considering most children walk to school. Her 'life' coat is a startling shade of yellow and she loves it, and I'm rather happy that she is very visible when out walking with her friends in the evenings.

DD2 has two winter coats by virtue of being second child. One has only ever been hers and is the smarter coat. The other is a hand-me-down that gets used for play/adventuring/spare when the other is soaked.

Ds still fits into his coat from last year as it was slightly too big. I try and buy them to last!

Sprogonthetyne · 02/12/2021 10:49

DS (5) get one winter coat each year, but I buy them big so last year's coat still fits well enough, and is kept in the car as a spare or for when his main coat it in the wash. He also has a padded puddlesuit for forest school and a thinner waterproof jacket for summer.

DD1 managed to keep one coat for 4 winters because she barely grew (and the first winter it was slightly big). She made up for it when the hormones hit and we had to scramble to buy new of everything
ShowOfHands · 02/12/2021 10:52

10yr old DS has a thick winter ski jacket type coat he wears day in day out and then a kagoul/pac a mac type thing for when it's warm and wet.

14yr old DD has a mustard yellow tartan donkey jacket, a purple and black corset style frock coat, a tartan full length wool coat, a dark blue duffle coat, a long black cape/coat thing which looks like she's wearing robes and several jackets she's made or upcycled. She wears them all in rotation. They're nearly all charity shop finds and she spends her pocket money on them. She loves coats and altering them in various ways.

Goldbar · 02/12/2021 10:52

My 4 yo has:

  • One pair of waterproof fleeced overalls to stop their clothes getting muddy on walks.
  • One waterproof warm jacket for nursery.
  • One long duffle coat.
Bananarice · 02/12/2021 10:53

My children have on average 3 each

  1. Winter coat
  2. Rain coat
  3. Spring/ autumn coat

There may also be few coat here and there that someone has overgrown and it fits a younger sibling.

Ds3 is currently an exception as he is a messy toddler who needs his coat washed regularly, so we need a spare.

Puffinhead · 02/12/2021 10:58

Average is 3 as well, same as Banarice, though the youngest has more as they’ve been passed down to her.

Occasionally one of them have had a denim jacket too.

WildStallyn · 02/12/2021 10:58

DS (8) has 1 winter coat (which he rarely wears)

DD (5) has 2, only because she received one for her recent birthday but I'd already bought her one. Handy for when one needs washing though.

SeaToSki · 02/12/2021 10:59

My 13 yrold has

1 ski jacket and she skis every weekend in winter
1 puffa jacket for school for cold days
1 fleece jacket for warmer days
1 unlined raincoat that only gets worn in the summer/shoulder seasons
1 sun jacket for the summer to keep the UV off her at the pool/beach

We live in New England so the weather can be extremely cold/hot but we dont get daily drizzle

WildStallyn · 02/12/2021 11:01

Oh and we usually get 2 winters out of the DCs coats.

MrsPleasant · 02/12/2021 11:06

Mine is 16 and apparently doesn't need one at all.

LakeShoreD · 02/12/2021 11:06

Excluding babies I find that a coat usually lasts 2 years. My DD’s main coat is a Patagonia light down puffer bought last year, it still fits and still looks as good as new. It went to the cleaners at the end of last winter. Her school costs are also on their second year.

Megan2018 · 02/12/2021 11:08

My 2 year old has several. She keeps a season appropriate coat and puddlesuit at nursery and then has a variety at home.
She has 2 winter weight for home at the moment, one is smarter and the other she wears to the horses, plus assorted waterproofs. She also has a couple of lighter jackets and several fleeces.
But I get them second hand for free/very cheap. Toddlers are messy so it’s good to be able to have ones to wash and wear. When she’s bigger I would imagine 1-2 is fine.

connectivityissues · 02/12/2021 11:08

One for school and one for weekend/ playing outside. They each also have a rain coat, a body warmer thing, multiple hoodies and a denim jacket each.

TrundlingAlong · 02/12/2021 11:33

My 3 year old has quite a few.

Smart wool coat
Warm waterproof winter/ski jacket
Slightly lighter padded jacket, getting a bit small now
Lightweight spring/autumn jacket
Waterproof shell jacket plus matching overalls
Puddlesuit
Snowsuit
Fleece

Almost all were 2nd hand or hand-me-downs (the 2 bought new were bought in the sale) and all get used.

GTAlogic · 02/12/2021 11:37

Mine have 1 each plus a fleecy jacket for warmer days or for wearing around the house if it's particularly cold. We can't afford more, especially considering how quickly they grow and need new ones.

BertieBotts · 02/12/2021 11:42

Just one generally. However we have a big gap between DS1 and DS2 and so DS2 gets showered with hand me downs, I think he has about 6 or 7 coats, it's pretty ridiculous. I need to donate some of them.

DS1 only has one the poor neglected lad :o But he's a teenager so rarely wears one anyway. I was pretty pleased with it, it's lasted him about 4 years so far. He must be due a new one.

elliejjtiny · 02/12/2021 11:53

The 2 teenagers have 1 winter coat each
10 year-old has a winter coat
8 year-old has a hand me down summer coat and a boden winter coat that I bought on eBay because it was £10 and an absolute bargain
7 year old has an eBay boden bargain winter coat

I also have a coat that is too small for dc2 and too big for dc3 and one that dc1 has grown out of for emergencies (and because I can't be bothered to put them in the loft)
