I am sorting my house out before Christmas....

I have decided that I am having a good sort out of every room, and clean it. I've been so busy with work, kids and my mental health that the cleaning has been on the back burner.
So far, I have done the main hallway (coats/shoes etc) and the conservatory. Hoping if I put it on here, I'll have some accountability!

Anyone have any energy they can send me?

Camomila · 02/12/2021 17:33

Productive day here Smile

DS2 very helpfully had a 2h nap so I have done all my normal tidying (ie picking up toys), laundry, and made the Christmas tree toddler proof (tied the base to a table leg with twine). Then on the way to pick DS1 from school we dropped a bag of clothes in the charity clothes bin.

Also tried to sort out the Christmas tree lights but couldn't get the battery box open so leaving them to DH Confused

November I've used all energy up today I'm afraid!
Downstairs toilet is sorted. I do need to mop the floor, but couldn't face it tonight.
Tomorrow's plan is to do the kitchen and living room, which has been neglected this week while I've been sorting stuff out. Then downstairs is done! So far, 8 bags of stuff has gone from the house.

@Thorilicious

Sounds like you had a good day yesterday! How was today?

If you want to add photos, feel free!! 😉

Is your downstairs loo fairly 'normal' or have you gone mad decorating it with unusual wall paper et ?

riverpebbles · 03/12/2021 22:15

Joining! I hoovered the sofas today - under the cushions, the lot. And washed a couple of sofa blankets which has been a long time coming.

Thorilicious · 03/12/2021 22:30

@NovemberNovemberDarkNights it's fairly normal, but is also a utility/storage room, so definitely needed a sort out!
I did the kitchen tonight, but ran out of steam, so tomorrow is the final push for downstairs.

Fell behind today, had to play life tetris. I'm jealous of anyone who got to the Charity shops with their clear outs!

SomethingBeginningWithX · 04/12/2021 10:15

I'm going to start this on Monday, will write a list this weekend or absolutely every drawer, cupboard, box etc that needs sorted and I'll choose one each day. Big or small depending on how busy I am that day. Like an alternative Advent Calendar!

ThousandsOfTulips · 04/12/2021 11:13

Desperately trying to do this but drowning in clutter! My house was so minimalist before having children. 😒🤣

Fundays12 · 04/12/2021 11:17

I have been doing this for the last few weeks. The amount of barely used toys and clothes I hand cleared out is ridiculous. The kitchen cupboards are now sorted and things sectioned of in plastic tubs so I can see easily what we have. I have been doing the attic a bit at a time as I am up it I take a few things down and put to charity.

Pandoracharm · 04/12/2021 11:43

Following this with interest. Just seen can have six items picked up by council for £50, so going to do that before Christmas. So finally garage will be clear!

Thorilicious · 04/12/2021 12:14

I'm pleased I've done what I've done. Will maybe be able to get more than I planned next week, as ds's LFT has come back positive this morning Sad. Just waiting for PCR....

ThousandsOfTulips · 04/12/2021 12:59

Oh no. 😬 Fingers crossed for you that it's negative!

Thorilicious · 04/12/2021 13:07

@ThousandsOfTulips thank you. He wouldn't eat his advent chocolate this morning, as it tasted yucky, so I'm not holding out much hope!

I love that alternative advent calendar! I'm going to join you!! Plus I'm going to do the previous 4 days worth today/tomorrow to catch up!!

@Thorilicious

Ah that makes more sense! I was wondering what on Earth needed decluttering in a standard downstairs loo Plus I love seeing how people have decorated them! Some really fantastic rooms in otherwise quite plain houses! (My house is plain, I'm all about the white walls!!)

Sorry to hear about DS, but at least you can get isolation done before Christmas as long as the rest of you don't fall like dominoes!!

Thorilicious · 07/12/2021 01:59

Things have definitely slowed in my sort out, 2 out of 4 of us now down with covid...

Hope ye are OK OP.

MushMonster · 07/12/2021 18:13

OP I am in the middle of this here! I have sorted kitchen, dining room, leaving room (though I have some paperwork to sort in there), all wardrobes, and bathroom. We also changed the floors downstairs, in kitchen, dining room and corridor recently.
Still pending sort bedside cabinets for the three of us (full of random rubbish), and my DD book shelves and make up, and a chest of drawers.
Also get rid of old furniture we have replaced and some bags with stuff.
Then we can bring the tree down from the attic.
It feels really good to get things sorted.
We have decluttered a fair bit, and I am liking the head space that gives you, so I am tempted to go on a second round and get rid of more stuff!

MushMonster · 07/12/2021 18:13

Aw, I just read your update!
I hope you all feel ok.Flowers

I got quite a few items in clear baskets now, and it is amazing how easier it is, isn't it? I just pull the one with seasonings out and have a look, instead of never finding anything or making a mess trying to find one. I have done the same in wardrobes. All foldables are in tubs, so you can get to them all, instead of never reaching what is at the bottom of the wardrobe. For my DD I am now rolling her tshirts, so I do not end up in what looks like a burgled up room everytime she searches for one!
Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 07/12/2021 19:00

You've just inspired mean to be dust the hall way.

justasking111 · 07/12/2021 19:39

The wonderful thing about Xmas decs is no dusting while they're strewn everywhere 😀

I tried the rolling method with teeshirts the family pull out, change their minds and shove back in.

Whenever I clear cupboards I have a bin usually a laundry basket lob in the throwaway stuff much easier to carry and recycle in the different bins we have here. Laundry basket are very versatile I use them for clearing the playroom floor can then sort into boxes

batmanladybird · 07/12/2021 19:45

I need to do this

Lndnmummy · 07/12/2021 21:04

I started this too last week. Our flat is bursting at the seams. I actually bit the bullet and asked for some help from a declutter person. I just felt overwhelmed by it and didnt know where to start. She is amazing. We have done the kitchen, bathrooms and living room and she is coming two more days to do the kids and our bedroom. Best money I have ever ever spent.

Lndnmummy · 07/12/2021 21:06

I also ordered some help from a confidential shredding service. We had years and years worth of old paper work. It was amazing to get rid of it.
