What temperature is your thermostat set at?

Our heating comes on at about 6.30 am, and is set to 19 degrees. During the day, it doesn't come on, except if the temperature falls below 13 (Arctic). In the depths of winter when we're at home all day, obviously we'll turn it on.

In the evenings, it's also set to 19, but sometimes this doesn't really seem warm enough, so I up to about 21, which DH reckons is too hot.

Just wondering what everyone else does?

It's like the old mumsnet chestnut of. How many meals can n you make with a chicken.
What is the psychology behind competing to have the lowest temp.
Weird weird weird

sqirrelfriends · 01/12/2021 22:36

20.5 in the day and evening,18 at night.

I have raynaud's and find it really difficult to
Warm up again if I get too cold. If it weren't for that (and working from home) I would have it at 18 during the day as well.

19C 6.30am -7.30am so I can get up and shower to a warm house. Then 19C 4pm - 10.30pm with a fleecy blanket. Off apart from that. Thermostat is in the hall so it’s quite possibly a bit warmer in the living room. I sleep much better when it’s fairly cool and only use a 9 tog quilt. People are different, though.

@danorak

Fucking hell there are some misers out there Grin
Or people who are just comfortable at lower temperatures? I also want to only have to remove my coat when I come in, not my jumper too. I like winter clothes and a cosy blanket in winter. I feel ill in hot stuffy houses.

Why do you think anyone is competing? What's weird is these kind of posts when people are just answering a question. We are all different, it's not a competition Confused

I have had long standing problems with my Thyroid, and we have a very large house, and a lot of children, so we had the heating system adapted to be able to adjust the temperature of each room individually. We do have open fires too as an option. I can't abide being cold, and I refuse to look like I've got lost on the way to Siberia walking around, or sitting in our home. So we usually have the settings quite high as on some nights it just feels colder than others. If anybody gets too hot they turn it off/down or whatever or open a window.

I don't give two hoots what anybody does in their home, I just focus in being comfortable and warm in ours.

I don't do cold 🥶

SantiagoSky · 01/12/2021 22:50

22 in the sitting room and kitchen. 19 in the bedrooms. We have a heat pump which is very cost efficient. Before that we set lower temperatures and different day and night settings.

Hen2018 · 01/12/2021 22:54

16° during the day, 14° at night.

I’ve never lived in a house with central heating before this year. It’s too hot.

Yummypumpkin · 01/12/2021 23:06

I still haven't put my heating on!

I'm honestly not cold yet.

I live in a flat and I think I am benefitting from my neighbours heating!

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 01/12/2021 23:15

@akaisnsouaj

These threads are so pointless, there are no rules about what temp it should be set at. Also it completely depends on where the thermostat is in your house. I can set mine to 18 in one location and it will make the house overall lovely and warm and in another it needs to be at 22 before the whole house has warmed up. If you're cold turn it up 🤷‍♀️
This!!

I have a portable thermostat. If it's in the lounge with me 21 is perfect, if I was to put it in the hallway, 21 would boil me in the lounge!

Is he genuinely too hot, or more worried about the £££??

I lived with my Aunt for a while. She's marvellous but needs her heating on 'broil'. It's horrible being too hot! It's horrible being too cold too. If you love each other you'll both need to compromise a bit! Buy yourself some thin, woollen layers & he can take off his hoodie!

Move your thermostat if you can, the placement makes quite a difference to the way your house heats.

amsadandconfused · 01/12/2021 23:24

About 19 …I adjust it if I am feeling cold or hot 🤷‍♀️

bbqpringle · 01/12/2021 23:24

I really feel the cold so usually 20/21in the day. Off at night.

icedcoffees · 02/12/2021 08:25

18.5 during the day, off at night, but I only have it set to come on for an hour in the morning and just before we get home in the evening.

It's off all day otherwise, so it's probably only on 2-3 hours a day apart from weekends or holidays.

Penners99 · 02/12/2021 10:16

16, heating rarely comes on.

Kinsters · 02/12/2021 10:21

23°C at night which is a little too hot for me but bearable. If I put it on during the day, which is rare, it's normally 25°C. I don't live in the UK though so we're cooling rather than heating and my contribution is quite irrelevant!

Babdoc · 02/12/2021 10:35

I don't have a "whole house"thermostat. I don't understand why you would want the unoccupied bedrooms to be as hot as the sitting room all day?
I have individual thermostat valves on every radiator, so set each room to a different temp.

dropitlikeitsloth · 02/12/2021 10:41

Ours is a new build, we made the mistake of having our hearing on at 23c for a few days last Winter. It was so hot but worst of all, the house took weeks to cool, we had to open the doors in the evening and it still took days to stop to a comfortable temperature. It’s currently set to come on if it drops under 18 but it hasn’t as yet 🤞🏻

Comefromaway · 02/12/2021 10:41

Ours is a bit hit and miss at the moment due to the fact the thermostat is usually in the hall but we are decorating so the hall radiator has been taken off.

Normally the thermostat is set at 20 at all times when the house is occupied and 15 when it isn't and overnight. The hall radiator is always on full to enable the hall thermostat to work properly.

I then have the bedroom TRV's set at 3, the living room set at 4 and the dining room set at 2 (its an internal room that retains the heat)

WomanWithDiamondEarring · 02/12/2021 11:41

I have a portable thermostat for the first time. Where is the best place, generally, to keep it?

Comefromaway · 02/12/2021 12:04

Somewhere with good airflow but not above a radiator or near an outside door where the temperature might suddenly change when it's opened. Also away from direct sunlight. Mine is usually in the hallway but under the stairs just above a bookcase/shoe rack away from the front door.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 02/12/2021 12:12

@Smokeahontas

I love these threads.
Why?

I genuinely don't understand the obsession on here with strangers home heating arrangements?

Threads about heating are started every day, if for some reason your life is improved by knowing what temp a random has their heating on why not read all the previous ones? Grin

WomanWithDiamondEarring · 02/12/2021 12:23

Thanks @Comefromaway

Smokeahontas · 03/12/2021 00:26

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair it was a wee bit of sarcasm - it’s the random competitiveness!
