What makes you report a thread?

Just that really!

I wondered what makes people report a thread. I haven't been here long but I recently saw someone comment something like 'I report most threads I see' and it got me thinking. I've only ever reported one thread so wanted to see what reasons other people had.

I've always thought if it's something like a thread not sounding true, surely you'd just ignore it instead of reporting and then commenting you've reported it too?

I don't want this to become a thread about a thread or anything like that, just want to hear what reasons some give:)

If I think it's a troll I report it.

Generally someone asking or encouraging posters to share personal info, such as toileting accidents

TeenMinusTests · 01/12/2021 17:46

spam / advertising
a couple of years back there was a troll who kept asking if plimsols were school shoes
very occasionally, abusive posts on non mainstream boards

FourTeaFallOut · 01/12/2021 17:46

Just when someone is being a perv or it's a scam.

SoupDragon · 01/12/2021 17:49

If it's clearly spam or if my troll radar pings. I'll sometimes report threads on certain topics if the poster appears to be a first time poster as there have been regular trolls for some things.

MrsJaniceBing · 01/12/2021 18:08

I once reported a thread where a poster had included a picture of her undercarriage as her OH had criticised how she looked or something.
The thread title gave no indication that a genitals photo was included so that was a surprise!

Other than that there are threads that are so obviously jackanory I have reported them.

A580Hojas · 01/12/2021 18:14

I report very viscious replies in AIBU occasionally. It's been a long time since I reported

A580Hojas · 01/12/2021 18:16

a whole thread. I just scroll past the obvious troll ones.

CarButtonCloth · 01/12/2021 18:20

@Rogue1001 I don't mean to be daft but what's toileting accidents? I've never heard of that before

All very interesting replies!

I'd think if someone was obviously trolling people would just ignore it but I guess we'd have trolls everywhere if that was the case

Ooo @TeenMinusTests advertising is an interesting one, how come? I guess it's not allowed or something?

Racism, spam, pervs obviously just trying to get their rocks off

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 02/12/2021 10:00

There's a fair few times I've reported ones in the bereavement section.

I've been on MN for years and always gave them the benefit of the doubt until I had one person turn out to be a troll when I offered help to get them through that time.

You can tell the ones who are fake and real on there usually, and most the ones I report are pbp trolling.

TeenMinusTests · 02/12/2021 10:05

Advertising isn't allowed on main boards. If it was then we'd get adverts all over.
People resurrect ancient threads with fake 'oh I know a product that could help' kind of things.
They are very different from when a normal poster is recommending something.

AwkwardSquad · 02/12/2021 10:11

Racism. And sometimes spam if I can be bothered

SwanMother · 02/12/2021 10:13

I've reported a few, ones that need to be taken down before anyone else sees them. Recently a picture of a childs privates and a troll saying they wanted to hurt children. Sickos basically.

PurpleDaisies · 02/12/2021 10:14

If it sounds like someone on a wind up.

I report individual posts that are personally attacking other posters, or sometimes for blatant covid misinformation that’s harmful to stay up. Anything disablist I report.

And spam. All the spam.

Atla · 02/12/2021 10:26

Pervs/voyeuristic posts - sometimes things just don't ring true/set off alarm bells, especially if encouraging people to share their own experiences.
Racism

There was someone on here maybe 2 or 3 years ago who clearly thought they were the authority on death and wrote a book about child loss.

The must have typed something into AS and resurrected quite a few threads from bereaved parents to advertise this book, I reported every single post, it was disgusting.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/12/2021 10:45

People report obvious trolls then want to know if they were right in their suspicions, which is why you see:

.

On threads
@Rogue1001 I don't mean to be daft but what's toileting accidents? I've never heard of that before
Usually "my child asked to go to the toilet, the teacher said no and child wet themselves" but usually asking posters to share stories.

ginslinger · 02/12/2021 12:18

I report vicious replies to posters, anyone I suspect who is spinning a story for money, trolls

MedusasBadHairDay · 02/12/2021 12:19

I report trolls and spam. I don't post on the thread to say so though.

Skyll · 02/12/2021 12:46

Anything I think MNHQ should look at

BleuJay · 02/12/2021 12:47

Wannabe scammers asking for complete strangers to have a look in their local shop, usually John Lewis, and buy something and post it to them and of course they will reimburse them.
