Somewhere with Whitby vibes but not Whitby for holiday

DD 14 loved Whitby and its slightly alternative style and actual physical goth shop. Where else might be good for a summer holiday? Needs to be in striking distance of a beach, but not necessarily right on the coast.

Tintagel is full of crystal shops and witchy Arthurian mash up themed shops. Personally I find it a little sad tho - not like Whitby which seems to have some real life and energy about it.
But it might work fir a day out if you base yourself on the North Cornish coast. The bridge over to the castle is quite cool

And just up the coast you have Boscastle, which has an excellent witchcraft museum and feels a lot less commercialised than Tintagel.

Glastonbury area? Full of alternative lifestyle stuff, lovely countryside for walks and the coast is not that long a drive.

MrsMadderRose · 30/11/2021 08:19

Brighton has a big area of cool and alternative shops that teens love, as well as beach, nice cafe and things to do, though it’s not spooky like Whitby. My kids really enjoyed a holiday there, glamping a few miles inland.

I really like St. Andrews too, beach, castle, loads of smaller villages and places to visit nearby, and it’s a university town so lots of student shopping.

Tenby in Wales
Deal in Kent
Brighton
Anglesey
West Bay, Dorset
Slapton, Devon
Southwold, Suffolk
Alnwick, Northumberland
Ambleside, Lake District
Anywhere in Devon or Cornwall

Hastings

boobot1 · 30/11/2021 08:25

Holy Island

Slothkin · 30/11/2021 08:42

Llandudno perhaps, if she likes Victoriana?

MichaelSemolina · 30/11/2021 14:19

Thanks for these. We have been to Llandudno, Glastonbury, Slapton, Tenby and Anglesey so you can see the kind of territory we like. I had thought about Brighton but am put off by the fact that surely it would be heaving in the summer?

Llangollen is lovely too - I’m a mostly recovered teen goth and I still find the Ladies of Llangollen, the steam train and vintage shops absolute catnip 😂

MaryStuart · 30/11/2021 15:08

Totnes has an alternative vibe. Not too far from the coast. Lovely little town. You can pootle down the gorgeous River Dart by boat to Dartmouth. Lots of gorgeous other villages nearby.

TheHuntingoftheSnark · 30/11/2021 15:52

Hastings, Falmouth, Lyme Regis.

saraclara · 30/11/2021 17:33

I like Brighton, but I think of it as a town rather than seaside. It's not at all scenic as seaside places go. Fone for a day trip, but not for a week's seaside holiday.

I love Whitby, and of the suggestions so far (that I know) I'd recommend Lyme Regis

todaysdilemma · 30/11/2021 18:17

Margate is nice, with the theme park and the Walpole Bay tidal pool. Not sure about the goth elements though.

todaysdilemma · 30/11/2021 18:19

And you can also do the Viking Train bike ride, or Oyster Trail around Margate and surrounds. And short day trip to London (1hr20 on fast train).

Riverlee · 30/11/2021 18:44

Maybe consider somewhere with a student population - Bournemouth? (Not sure about Goth element)

notacooldad · 30/11/2021 18:47

Hebden Bridge and go to Gaddings for the beach!!
( if you know, you know 😉!!!)

Soundofshuna · 30/11/2021 19:14

What about Lincoln? Could have day trips to the coast as a left field suggestion

MichaelSemolina · 30/11/2021 19:25

Yes, done Lincoln too!

Have you been to Weymouth? That's got a nice vibe, lots of cafes, little shops, etc, and the beach is nice. Brighton is fab, but the beach is stony and it gets very busy.

Immaculatemisconception · 30/11/2021 19:35

Looe in Cornwall is also divided in two, just like Whitby. Weymouth has a lot going for it with a nice beach, harbour, bars restaurants and shops.

There's some nice seasides in North Norfolk, including Hunstanton, Wells next the Sea, Cromer and Sheringham.

AnyFucker · 30/11/2021 19:37

Crowded Bay, North Devon

MichaelSemolina · 30/11/2021 20:30

Agree Norfolk coast good, but done. Haven't been to Weymouth. Not sure how much teen goth shopping is available in some of these places?!

Edinburgh. Loads of nice architecture and shops. Some great touristy stuff to do. There must be beaches within striking distance?
