Look at Saltburn. It's lovely and quite like St Ives, though not so big.

Needaholidayplease · 29/11/2021 19:58

Whitby's lovely, much nicer than Scarborough and more to do nearby. Or you could go further up to Northumberland?

AnnaSW1 · 29/11/2021 19:58

I think Whitby is much nicer than Scarborough

fedup078 · 29/11/2021 19:59

I love Whitby

InFiveMins · 29/11/2021 20:05

Whitby for sure - it's just lovely.

GiltEdges · 29/11/2021 20:10

Another vote for Whitby here, just got back a few weeks ago after spending a week there with DH, DS and 2 Ddogs Smile Would highly recommend Aislaby as a place to stay if you like walking (and a good village pub!)

Thewishingchair123 · 29/11/2021 20:28

Another vote here for Whitby- lovely little independent shops, great coastline, great walks. I’ve also had Robin Hoods Bay recommended to me for day trips from there.

fannyadamson · 29/11/2021 20:29

@onlineschoolmum. saltburn looks nice!
@Needaholidayplease. yes could go further!

where is best for body boarding

Love Saltburn but don’t think it’s quite right for a full holiday. I also love St Ives and we go every year. I would totally stop in Robin Hoods Bay and make trips out. I love it so much. Whitby is nice for a day trip but very busy I just think Robin Hoods Bay is more special. Also Northumberland is unbelievably beautiful. Best beaches in the Uk by a mile and the castles . It’s stunning

Hoppinggreen · 29/11/2021 20:39

If you are happy to go further go up to Bamburgh and Seahouses

fantasmasgoria1 · 29/11/2021 21:00

Whitby is absolutely amazing. It's beautiful and restful.

wavingwhilstdrowning · 29/11/2021 21:02

Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are lovely. Scarborough is fun! A lot of fun!

Whycantibetangy · 29/11/2021 21:03

Oh Christ don’t go to Scarborough! Its the armpit of Yorkshire

Roystonv · 29/11/2021 21:10

Scarborough gives you access to lovely areas, kiss me quick hats at South bay, quieter at north bay, castle to visit but it has its problems similar to Blackpool. Not sure it offers what you are looking for. Can't help 're body boarding.

BlowDryRat · 29/11/2021 21:13

DH and I took our 10 and 7yo to Whitby last year. We really enjoyed it. Lots of walking and bike trails, history, decent beach and other things to do nearby.

Palosverdesblue · 29/11/2021 21:22

Bamburgh is nicer imo if you want to go a bit further up.

We grew up with a holiday home very close to Robin Hoods Bay so have done that part of the coast a lot.

I prefer Northumberland.

Fuuuuuckit · 29/11/2021 21:33

Whitby is far more swish than Scarborough, although teens will love the trashiness of the arcades, sweet and souvenir shops, tat shops and old fashioned brit seaside-ness of Scarbados.

I do agree that Northumberland has far, far better beaches but generally further from civilisation (read places like Macdonalds, Primark, usual teenager staples Wink). You could probably have a couple of great days in either but for any longer you'd need to drive.

Junegirl15 · 29/11/2021 22:02

I grew up in this part of the country. Would also say Whitby rather than Scarborough as a base. If a small village on the beach with pub appeals take a look at Runswick Bay. That is my favourite. Just outside Whitby is Sandsend which is a nice beach, seals and nice pub.

Xfox · 29/11/2021 22:06

Saltburn is popular with surfers so a good bet for body boarding. There is a little shop that does hire too (I'm not a surfer - no idea what exactly they have!).

Lots of nice places down the coast or over the moors for day trips (including whitby of course).

MrsFoxyplease · 29/11/2021 22:09

Whitby. Definitely.
Although I'd also do a long day in Scarborough.

DaddypigLTB · 29/11/2021 22:11

Scarborough is probably better for body boarding, when I lived there, I knew a lot of people who enjoyed the surf. Cayton bay village is just outside Scarborough, small village, popular with surfers etc.

OtherPlans · 29/11/2021 22:11

Staithes is quieter than Whitby with great walks and views

fannyadamson · 29/11/2021 22:12

Thanks all..think I will concentrate on Whitby!

VeganVampire · 29/11/2021 22:14

For body boarding you need to be just south of Scarborough at Cayton.

fannyadamson · 29/11/2021 22:14

@OtherPlans. dd used to watch old jacks boat set in Staithes with Bernard cribbed. ...wr live in a small quiet village. so I like busy on holiday!
