@cheeseismydownfall

I honesty don't get the mumsnet Whitby love. We spent a week in Robin Hood's Bay in the summer (it was a toss up between RHB and Whitby, based on how much people rave about Whitby on here). RHB was indeed very quaint, lovely place.

We had expected to spend at least a couple of days in Whitby, but left after two hours and didn't go back. Even the kids hated it. Completely dump. Sorry!

I agree. I think it's considered more middle class than Scarborough Wink so must be better! I've spent many a weekend in RHB though wouldn't stay there with children. Went to Whitby as a family with DC aged 17/19 so adults really. No nice restaurants, elbow to elbow crowds and gloomy beach.

definitely whitby or surrounding area. Pickering is lovely

I think Whitby is a real Marmite place. The side with the Abbey seems quite upmarket with the quirky little shops and cafes, but the other side is more down to earth with amusement arcades and so forth.

I found Scarborough centre a lot tackier and downmarket than Whitby, but then again we discovered Peasholm Park and the train and had a lovely afternoon there.

Scarborough has upped it's game since the pandemic, and are trying to improve even more (I live here, I wouldn't move away, much prefer it over huddersfield and leeds)

However, Scarborough is better as a day or weekend trip at the most right now IMO. The main shops available are those found in most towns and cities, with the quirkier shops hidden or closed.

North Bay beach is where most of the surfers and body boarders are as it's quieter than South Bay where all the arcades and tat shops are.

Parking in the summer is like parking in Whitby in the summer, practically impossible unless you get there early enough, or are lucky to spot a car leaving and diving in quick.

Whitby is definitely not middle class! I can attest to that! I have never been to Scarborough though.

I really like Filey, we have been there twice. The beach is gorgeous and the holiday parks there means there’s lots of activities for the kids.
It’s close enough you could do a day trip to scarborough, bridlington or whitby.
Whitby was very very busy when we were there but it was a great day out with all its lovely
little shops etc.
