Opinions on this dress for Christmas do?

Any opinions welcome on this dress for my Christmas do - have been looking for ages and haven't got a clue! The do is technically black tie but I know other people are wearing party type dresses. For context I'm 37, don't want it to be too tarty but not old woman either, think this would come to just above the knee!

I had to google dress code for black tie as I had no clue. See below:

"What does black tie dress code mean for a woman?
Image result for what is a black tie dress code
Apart from white tie attire, black tie is the most formal of all dress codes. ... For women, the code typically calls for a floor-length dress or gown. While cocktail dresses can be an appropriate option for black tie, long dresses tend to be a more elevated choice"

it looks nice, thank you for posting

It’s too short for black tie and more suitable for someone who is 20 will be wearing it for a night out round the clubs….

Think you want something more elegant ….

Have you seen Adrianna Papell dresses from John Lewis they have beautiful dresses ….( they are my favourite) lots end up in the sale too. Have a look…. That’s my fav dresses for black tie.

Good luck

Personally I love this one:

But green might not everyone’s cup of tea

Okay, I criticised the dress earlier but the dress looks much better worn than on the the hanger so I take my comments back. I think the poster looks very nice, the dress fits and she suits the dress. It's not too young either. It's still not black tie though I think maybe things have loosened up on the strict rules and if she knows other women will be wearing similar things she should crack on. It is only a dress after all.

Well one of my colleagues is wearing a shortish wrap velvet dress that shows loads of cleavage so if that's good enough for her I think I might just go for it!

Sorry, but I think this is horrid - and looks even shorter than the one in the OP.
TatianaBis · 28/11/2021 13:35

Like I said OP it’s fine. Personally I’d wear a belt/sash with it but that’s me.

I go to loads of black tie stuff and I don’t know where people got the idea that dresses have to be long. It would specify if that were the case. Cocktail dress is fine for a Christmas party.

I think you're dress is better than most of the ones linked here 😁. Go for it op!

I think it's probably a bit tongue in cheek, and everyone is very likely to be absolutely shit faced and dancing on the tables (having heard past stories of department nights out!)

Usually one of the employees will book into one of the ‘Christmas party nights’ at local hotels etc. All arranged and paid for by employees so depends on someone being bothered to book and collect the money!

@HeartvsBrain I don't believe honesty and diplomacy are mutually exclusive.

I love that dress! I say go for it, if you feel good in it then wear it and have fun at the party! 🙂

olympicsrock · 28/11/2021 14:48

I think for an NHS black tie do that would be perfect ( I am also NHS...really like the dress too. Fun but as it has sleeves is not too much flesh on show...

Unless the Op is a coat hanger, she hasn’t posted a pic of herself in the dress Confused

My NHS trust holds a black tie event every year. We pay £50 per ticket! It's not free, or paid for, or even subsidised!
@HeartvsBrain I don't believe honesty and diplomacy are mutually exclusive.
Of course they are not always or even usually exclusive, but then if the honest answer is the same as the diplomatic one, there is no need for diplomacy anyway!
The problem is when there is an actual issue between being honest and potentially hurting someones feelings, or lying (being diplomatic) and again, potentially, letting someone do something that may well cause them embarrassment, or stress.

I did hope that my little example given last time would explain what I meant, but it obviously didn't so please bear with me while I try another often used example. Hopefully you know the story of the King's new clothes.

The King ordered some new clothes, but when they arrived they were invisible. Nevertheless he put them on, and all around him told him what fine clothes they were, and very suitable for a King (some people told him this because they were very scared of him, and were worried that if they told him that he was not wearing any clothes, then he might punish them for it. But others were kindly people, who never wanted to hurt anyones feelings, and they loved their King so they didn't tell him the truth either. Now later that day there was a parade and the King was going to lead it on horseback, in his New Clothes, and yet still no-one told him the truth. The streets were lined with nearly all the people of his nation, Women, Children, and Men, and they nearly all clapped him and shouted out how splendid his new clothes were... until a little girls voice rang out clearly above all the others, but your Majesty, you are not wearing any clothes, you are NAKED! Everyone suddenly went deadly quiet, some started to shake with fear, while others felt heartbroken for the King's embarrassment. The King went very, very red, and asked some of his courtiers if what the little girl said was true, and he told them that they would be sacked if they weren't honest, so they told him the truth. The King became even redder from the top of his head, to the tips of his toes, including all of his appendages. He had never been so embarrassed before in his whole life. He quickly called for fur rugs to cover up his shame, and then he found the little girl who had been honest to him, and made her a Princess, and his right hand adviser.
Ok, I might have changed the story a little, but I hope you got the drift?
Now do you think that anyone else should have been honest with the King from the start, or do you believe that diplomacy was still the right course of action?
