Opinions on this dress for Christmas do?

Any opinions welcome on this dress for my Christmas do - have been looking for ages and haven't got a clue! The do is technically black tie but I know other people are wearing party type dresses. For context I'm 37, don't want it to be too tarty but not old woman either, think this would come to just above the knee!

Go for it. In my experience even with black tie people will be fairly flexible with their dressing, you won’t find it is 100% as expected. It’s not too out of the realm so if you like it wear it! Can’t get much more Christmassy and dressy than gold sparkles!

Yes it's true...I don't consider it black tie but it won't raise any eyebrows if you do wear it.

And you’ve said technically black tie, so clearly you can’t wear your tracksuit, but if you’ve talked to colleagues and they’re in the same mindset don’t worry about being perfectly on the ball. You’ll regret it when you get there and see others not in full black tie. It’s dressy, party style, Christmas and you’ve made an effort. Hope you have a great time!

I think with the right shoes, jewellery and hair the dress would be fine. Unless it's the ambassadors party, black tie is quite broad these days imo.

lunarlandscape · 27/11/2021 22:31

I like it in a sort of 1970s disco throw back way. It is very glitzy so a Christmas party is the place to air it.

Changechangychange · 27/11/2021 22:32

I don’t understand why the comments seem to be swaying towards the negative.
It’s sparkly and Christmassy

For me, it is purely because it is both a black tie event and a work do. If OP was going out with her mates, or if the work do was down the local pub, I would tell her to go for it as well.

Tomthumbsbigbum · 27/11/2021 22:34

Cheap and cheap and nasty - wow. Is there not much going on in aibu?

Confusedteacher · 27/11/2021 22:35

I think it’s lovely! I’m 42 and I’d wear it Grin

KenAdams · 27/11/2021 22:35

I'm a similar age and I usually go for something like this www.quizclothing.co.uk/clothes/00100028274.html?vpid=00100028274

Go full sequin if you want to, but for your age, I'd recommend a different style.

InFiveMins · 27/11/2021 22:36

It's lovely and perfectly appropriate for the occasion.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/11/2021 22:39

Black tie = full length dress, etc for women. That's a party frock, cocktail dress at a push.

BleuJay · 27/11/2021 22:40

It looks like something you would wear for Gala Bingo prize giving night.

For a smart do, something more elegant would be more appropriate.

Changechangychange · 27/11/2021 22:40

It is really hard to say without seeing what it look like on you. If it looks like picture 1, it is totally fine, but looking at it on the hanger I think there is a fair chance it is more like picture 2 in real life.

First of all apologies if I actually offended anyone by saying old woman, no offence intended and on reflection my mum who is in her late 60s would absolutely go out wearing this, she is way bolder than me with her dress sense and she knows how to party, I never go out hence asking for advice!

For context I'm not senior in my role (NHS, newly qualified), pretty sure the dress is longer than it looks and comes to just above the knee. I have looked at formal gowns suitable for a black tie do but I'm just pretty sure everyone is going for Christmas sparkles. I need to do a survey and see what everyone's wearing!

Also because of covid, being a student and stressful stuff going on at home I haven't had a proper night out in about 3 years hence wanting to sparkle, I can't imagine I'll have another night out for a long time afterwards.

It doesn’t look like it has any structure and that the material is flimsy. This will make it difficult to pull off.

I’m really not keen on short dresses or skirts and generally feel not many women are blessed with good enough legs to carry them off.

Knees are funny things and I feel people look better if they keep them covered.

Confusedteacher · 27/11/2021 22:49

Some of these comments are really harsh! I think you get a skewed perception on mumsnet OP, you’d be better sending a photo to some of your work friends and seeing what they think/ if it’s in a similar vein to their party outfits.

BungleandGeorge · 27/11/2021 22:53

I think you’ll feel out of place in that at a black tie do. You could get away with smart cocktail. If that wouldn’t worry you I think it’s a nice dress

DDivaStar · 27/11/2021 22:54

It looks nice agree it looks quite short but all depends in your shape. You could pop a cami or vest top underneath if the crossover is not too secure or a bit low. Again that depends on your shape, as a busty lady I often wear a top under a wrap dress..

TSSDNCOP · 27/11/2021 22:55

Tacky at any speed.

MynameisWa · 27/11/2021 22:56

@Confusedteacher I hope that’s not directed at my post. I don’t feel as if OP needs to be patronised and so I gave an honest answer.

Harsh doesn’t really come into it. It’s just being honest which is the point.

I would wear something like this for a black tie event!

Watchingyouwazowski · 27/11/2021 23:08

If you can’t wear sequins at Christmas, when can you? Wear what you like be you 17, 37, 57 or 97! As long as you feel comfortable and happy. I’m way older than you and I’m planning on wearing something velvety to my Xmas do. And it’s above the knee. At my age!

whatstobecomeofus · 27/11/2021 23:14

Looks a bit 70s to me.
