Opinions on this dress for Christmas do?

Any opinions welcome on this dress for my Christmas do - have been looking for ages and haven't got a clue! The do is technically black tie but I know other people are wearing party type dresses. For context I'm 37, don't want it to be too tarty but not old woman either, think this would come to just above the knee!

God help you if you ever age

CasparsWineBar · 27/11/2021 23:16

It's hard to tell what it would look like without seeing it on you or a model- but from that pic it doesn't look 'black tie' to me - too short.

Beware. Sequins will shred your tights within minutes. This is the voice of bitter experience.

Its perfectly fine for a xmas do. Boden is beloved on mumsnet and its frumpsville so go for the sparkles.

anon12345anon · 27/11/2021 23:23

I love it!!

As long as you feel comfortable wearing it, then go for it!!! Wink

coogee · 27/11/2021 23:24

If it looks like picture 1, it is totally fine, but looking at it on the hanger I think there is a fair chance it is more like picture 2 in real life.

Have you got that the wrong way round?

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 27/11/2021 23:27

Too hard to say without seeing it on & knowing exactly what others are wearing.

I think you need a very good bod to wear it well. I'd look like a very glittery sausage roll!
And it would be a weird below my knees length on me too.

However my taller, thinner, god daughter would look great in it. She's early 30's.

wejammin · 27/11/2021 23:29

Gosh some people can be so harsh! OP, if you feel confident you'll look great. What's the absolute worst that can happen because of the dress? It's not offensive or distasteful. It's sparkly and Christmassy, you're not wearing it to a funeral.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 27/11/2021 23:39

Looks more like a fancy cocktail party, not a black tie dinner.

eveningbubble · 27/11/2021 23:53

too sparkly maybe? @BleuJay that dress is the colour of vomit.

Saz12 · 27/11/2021 23:55

Find out what everyone else is wearing first - at least length of dress. Then if it’s appropriate (ie people aren’t wearing flood-length formal gowns) and you love if, wear it!

To me, it looks like it’s not structured enough and would make most women look a bit baggy / podgy / knock-kneed by the time they arrived. Difficult to say from on the hanger.

MollysDolly · 28/11/2021 00:02

It's not black tie at all.

On the basis you think lots of people aren't adhering to the dress code, (double check this) it's a shiny dress, so it will do for a Christmas occasion.

Just as a dress, standalone, I think it looks shapeless and a bit cheap/low quality.

CallMeBettyBoop · 28/11/2021 01:03

Too short for black tie IMO

Bellyups · 28/11/2021 01:16

I don’t like it, and it’s not black tie

1forAll74 · 28/11/2021 01:51

I like it, it looks gold or bronze on my laptop screen.

DramaAlpaca · 28/11/2021 02:11

Not suitable for black tie, and I think the fabric looks cheap. Sorry. You can do a lot better than that dress.

arcof · 28/11/2021 02:59

Just no. Google sparkly dress, the world is your oyster

Aquamarine1029 · 28/11/2021 03:22

That dress is not black tie in any way, shape or form.

Goneblank38 · 28/11/2021 03:29

I like it! You can dress it down a little if you like with black tights and a blazer. It's probably not black tie but life's short and it's Christmas so have at it, I think.

OffRoadFozzyBear · 28/11/2021 04:20

If you want sequins, how about this top with a long skirt?

Women can maybe get away with an elegant shorter dress at black tie but I would wear the full length dress. I think that dress might look wonderful on a 5 foot 11 inch model with red hair. On a mere mortal, I think it might tread a fine line between looking cheap and being ageing. Plain lines would be better and jewel colours like green, red, blue (depending on your colouring) are always appropriately. I know the Duchess of Cambridge wore a gold dress to that film premiere but that was an expensive dress, it was specifically tailored to fit her and the neckline raised, and it was full length.

Rangoon · 28/11/2021 04:43

And I can say ageing if I want - I don't think anybody other than maybe a teenager wants to look older when they get dressed up for a special occasion. I am in my fifties and I certainly don't. The opportunity to age is a privilege that is denied to some people so it's not that I am railing against ageing.

DockOTheBay · 28/11/2021 04:51

I agree with this saying it's not black tie appropriate

MorningNinja · 28/11/2021 05:03

If you like it OP, wear it.

If it was a black tie cruise event, I'd say not suitable...but its Christmas!

Fairylights25 · 28/11/2021 05:33

It is fun, and black tie is formal, so no it won't work at all, but worth keeping for Christmas Eve or similar.
